Case Study 1: Cloud computing 1. Are the security arrangements for data and applications stored in the cloud the responsibility of the user or the vendor?
I believe that the responsibility lies on both the user and the vendor to arrange appropriate security arrangements for the data and applications stored in the cloud. Cloud computing helps computers keep their storage capacities lower by breaking the physical bonds between IT infrastructure, but it allows security threats to personal information being hacked or leaked if the security is not looked after appropriately. 2. Do you agree with Microsoft’s bold prediction that the cloud is the foundation of the 21st-century digital economy?
I do agree with Microsoft’s bold prediction that the cloud is going to be the foundation of the 21st-century digital economy because it has diverse advantages over the traditional storage concepts that are on general hard drives and other IT devices. Also the other advantages of using cloud computing include the easy access of data from anywhere in the world with internet access and it can help reduce the storage requirements of hardware; thus reducing costs. By reducing these costs within the hardware it may in turn also reduce other costs such as paper and waste within businesses which would help contribute to sustainability of the environment.
3. As an individual user you need to consider whether you would utilise the cloud for data, photo and music storage, among other things. Discuss the reasons for your decision.
I personally do not use cloud computing as I do not fully trust the integrity of others. As the world is changing so dramatically and fast toward the going digital trend I suppose I am just a little more conservative and do not want my information floating about possibly being vulnerable or an accessible target to hacking. Hacking and social engineering has increased as the fast as the digital trend and as everyone is very content for new IT innovations to save money and storage and increase accessibility to suit their fast pace lifestyles, I believe they forget that it is opening up their vulnerability to potential endangerment of others gaining access to their personal information.
I like to create backups of my photos, work, music and all my other files onto external hard drives and discs. This creates and gives me the security that my files are safe as I know where they are. Case Study 2: Turning e-waste into gold
1. Why would the Olympics benefit from creating a strong environmental enterprise infrastructure?
The Olympics would benefit from creating a strong environmental enterprise infrastructure because the Olympics reach and captivate worldwide audiences and by setting a strong environmental standard it would let the world know that it is doing their part for clean energy and a clean environment.
2. How can the Olympics help support ethical e-waste initiatives?
The Olympics could give a helping hand by informing and showing the world that recycling is the right path for the future. Each country that hosts the Olympics should inform their citizens to help out also by going green. By initiating ethical practices to save our planet from un-wanted waste and recycled waste piles the Olympics could do their part as a role model for others to see and follow.
3. Why would a sporting event like the Olympics be concerned with reducing its carbon footprint?
The Olympics should be very concerned with reducing its carbon footprint to help set a good representation of their reputation whilst making history all at the same time.
Environmentalist groups insist that the Olympics should do what they can to help preserve the environment and support sustainability. As the Olympics use a lot of resources to set up the games, unfortunately they are used only for a short period of time so by reducing their carbon footprint they will therefore save money and the planet if they decided to use more environmentally products and recycled materials that could then be recycled when the games are finished rather than go to waste. This would then show the world that they are contributing to establishing a long sustainable planet and set an example for everyday people.
4. What could the Olympics do to help shed light on global environmental enterprise issues?
The Olympics could help raise awareness on global environmental enterprise issues by opening up and asking the world to help out by going green. To encourage others to do this they would have to prove that they are involved and passionate about the subject too. They can prove this by using smaller and more sustainable and environmentally friendly companies as sponsors to encourage other larger companies to follow suit. As the Olympics are worldwide leaders they can help give confidence to us to help in our part in changing the world.
5. How could Moore’s Law enable future Olympic medals to be made from more e-waste?
Moore’s Law refers to the computer chip performance per dollar doubling every 18 months.
It has also made technological devices smaller and more readily available to more people at all different income levels. But as more devices are purchased, more devices are thrown to waste.
The Olympics could advertise and help encourage people to recycle these unwanted devices as they can use parts of the unwanted materials to produce their medallions. This would show that they support the environment and help set an example for others to follow. It would also set a new worldwide standard of sustainability and going green as they are one of the world leaders of sports.
