What determination means in my book is to always look for the better. Never give

up and always strive for the best, no matter how hard the road might be. What determination means in the webster dictionary is a firm or fixed intention to achieve a desired end. Determination could also mean perseverance, strong willed, self motivated, relentless, willingness, ambition and strength. And I know I keep using ski racing as an example but it is an awesome example for determination. Not just ski racing but also any other sport out there. Any athlete can agree with me if they love playing sports and strive to be or get better on their part. I know that every sport I have participated in, I always had that inner drive or determination to push myself a little harder each day, practice, race, game, or meet. Iʼve played a lot of sports, such as field hockey, golf, lacrosse, gymnastics, crew racing, ski racing, cross country running, softball, and baseball and in each and every sport, I never gave up. Always wanted to show my coach what I was capable of, and if I didnʼt, I didnʼt feel satisfied. I remember when I was playing field hockey, and it was my sophomore year, I was starter on the Junior Varsity Team and I was put in as left wing, which is a forward. And all I remember was training really hard and showing up to every practice to show the coach I was worth being on Varsity as a sophomore but even though I didnʼt make the varsity team, I didnʼt let that stop me from trying any harder than what I was doing before hand. So I pushed myself everyday and it paid off, I was the lead scorer on the team and the Varsity coach pulled me aside at the end of the season and specifically told me that if I pick up my running by at least two minutes on the 2 mile run, that she would have no problem

pushing me up to the Varsity team. Over that summer, I was out there everyday running and doing my own exercises to become significantly better. Junior year comes along and tryouts are right around the corner, so I was still out there running and running. The day of tryouts, we had to run the 2 mile and I remember as I was running I kept telling myself that I was good enough and that I deserve a Varsity letter. I cross the finish line and I couldnʼt wait to hear my time, I was so anxious that I couldnʼt catch my breath. The coach didnʼt yell out the times that day but after all of the anxiety over the next couple of days, it was decision time. As she was yelling out the names of who made Varsity that year, I kept telling myself not to worry and that I know I made it but just incase I didnʼt I would promise myself to work even more harder. But the coach yelled out my name and I felt that warmer rush or blood just flow throughout my whole entire body. It was beyond rewarding knowing that all of my hard work has finally paid off. But I never stopped working hard after that, I was always working hard on Varsity but it was all worth it in the end, thats for sure. Itʼs kind of the same with with my Lacrosse. Iʼve always found an interest in playing Lacrosse because ever since I was little, my cousins played so when ever they were outside practicing, I was too. As soon as my high school created a team, I was the one to be out every day making sure my stick skills were all right and just practicing as I would when I was little and playing with my cousins. It was close to every day I would always ask someone new if they can teach me something new. I always had the ambition to become just a little better. In gymnastics there would be this little contest to see who can do a hand stand the longest. Even though it was a silly contest. It pushed me to work on my handstands. I wanted to win at least one little competition. To be honest, I have similar stories for all of the sports. In my opinion, it

doesnʼt matter how big or small your goal or ambition is, every one has a little bit of motivation or determination to push out the best.

Easy Rider

...Easy Riders, Raging Bulls Sex. Drugs. Rock and Roll. Three simple words that helped shaped an era that brought some of the greatest movies, such as The Godfather, Jaws, and The Taxi Driver. In the book Easy Riders, Raging Bulls, by Peter Biskind takes us on a bumpy and wild ride of the era that challenged new ideas to young filmmaker’s that stimulated an edgier movie industry. This book is compelled of hundreds of interviews, with directors, stars, agents, and even one night stands. It tells the up close and personal story in way that celebrities never talked about drugs, sex, and money and the repercussions. Easy Riders, Raging Bulls is remarkable in the way that gave us an understanding and behind the scenes of Hollywood’s last golden age. “The 70s were the first time that a kind of age restriction was lifted. Young people were allowed to come rushing in with all of their naïveté and their wisdom and the privileges of youth. It was just an avalanche of new ideas, which is why the 70s were such a watershed” (Biskind 15). A small low budget biker movie made in 1969 sparked the new era of movies, known as Easy Rider. This movie was a shock but a huge success to Hollywood for the fact it was made with drugs, booze, and violent rivalry. Once Easy Rider was successful a new breed of directors were in demand, such as Francis Coppola, Peter Bogdanovich, George Lucas, and Martin Scorsese. This book contains so much research and extensive interviews of not only the directors, but...

...Douglas Salayka Prof. Major Easy Rider Easy rider was a film I couldn’t understand. I have to say I didn't like it. I somewhat respect what the film did for the industry but still I cant full respect it for the scenes of them having sex at the graveyard. That was a bit to much for me. The movie starts out with a cocaine deal, The 2 main characters then wanted to use the money and jet. The scenes of them riding around on motorcycles used music from the time like Born to be wild. At that time it was very new to be using tracks like that in films. For that reason I give the movie bonus points because it did something nobody ever really did at the time. So the 2 men on the road trip find themselves in all sorts of trouble. The film actually used real drugs in the scenes that depicted them using cocaine and marijuana. To me that's crazy, but I know Dennis hopper had to do with this as he was a user at the time. I even read that Jack Nicholson actually came out and said it was real marijuana that he smoked. In class we touched upon why Jack Nicholson died but the other men didn't. I think we came to a consensus that it was just luck that they survived a bit longer but I still don't get that. The biggest thing I want to talk about is the drug tripping scene in the graveyard. Hopper didn't get permission or anything to film there and they were basically having sex on the tombstone of a dead child. If something like this happened now the media would be all over it saying how unforgiving...

...English 379 March 12, 2013 In the movie easy A, a teen comedy, the main character Olive is initially presented to the viewers as the virginal and feminine high school student who dresses like the average high school student, mostly in pants, and turns out to be transformed into the sex object/pin-up girl to resemble her counterparts in the movie. One being her best friend Rhi and the other Marianne, both whom which throughout the entire movie are always in very short skirts and/or extremely revealing tops, especially Rhiannon. Nonetheless, the one normal, dressing female in the movie, Olive, is then in turn forced and presented as a skank, a whore, and a home wrecker. Although one of the central themes of the movie is the loss of virginity, there are no sex scenes and it does displays a witty, contemporary, modern day spin on Nathaniel Hawthorne's classic novel, The Scarlet Letter. Moreover, the message depicted throughout the movie is that an innocent, little white lie can get blown out of proportion and that teenagers in general are concerned of how others perceive them in their day to day lives. The movie starts off with Olive being portrayed as a virginal, down to earth, average high school student with no cares in the world but is hastily transformed into the slutty female character very commonly used throughout Hollywood films to depict females nowadays. When a little white lie about losing her virginity meant for her best friends ears only gets out of hand and...

...Kyle Kisling April 7th, 2013 Composition 1 Food and Family Food holds a special place in society. Aside from its obvious purpose of survival, food also is a great way to bring people together. The first real example I can provide is the common celebration of Thanksgiving. The day has no real significance other than eating food with family. A turkey is placed at the center of the table, football provides entertainment, and family members enjoy the company of one another. I feel like some people underappreciate the true value of food and the cultural reunions it creates. Though not all countries celebrate Thanksgiving, food still carries an important role in countries all over the world. The first documentary we watched was called Smokin’ Fish. The film went into deep investigation of the culture of Cory Mann. The title alone should give away the idea that food is somewhat involved in Cory’s culture. Cory is an entrepreneur who annually returns to his home village for a few months to catch fish from the river and smoke them. Initially, I questioned his motives when he simply abandons his business and returns home to fish. It came off as strange because most people are not willing to risk their financial security to go fishing for a few months. The film continues on and as it progresses you see that smoking fish carries a much deeper meaning to Cory. Cory is part Indian and smoking fish is a tradition his peoples have had for centuries. He feels as though it is his duty...

Ordinary People Character Analysis

...between Conrad and his parents, and in especially with his mother. She takes and interprets all of his actions the wrong way, thinking that he is pointing her out in order to hurt her feelings. Therefore, in order for a relationship to be strong and for it to last, there must be proper communication, with being outgoing and honest. Another important element in relationship is trusting. Without trust a relationship will most likely be sabotaged with suspicion and lies. Cal trusted his son, Con in many ways, even before Con learned to trust himself. One of the first evident signs of external trust in this novel was when Con gets his car for Christmas and "Cal, resisting the urge to call, 'Take it easy!' or any other of those good luck charms, thinks, He will be very careful. He will take it easy, even though he has not driven in nearly a year, because he is a good driver." (Page 117) An additional show of a lack of trust is when Con does not have enough belief in his mother to tell her how he feels about all the things he is feeling. This includes what he believes his mother thinks of him, and about his feelings on his brother's death. When a relationship is in lack of trust, many hurtful and damaging things are held inside, and feelings do not become acknowledged or known. The element of forgiveness is very important in numerous ways, because no one is exactly perfect, and everyone makes mistakes in life as expected. Some people can come to terms with the past and move on, but others...

...Easy A The Princess Bride, Groundhog Day, and Ferris Bueller’s Day off have all become some of the great classic comedies of all time. What makes a classic comedies movie? A classic stands the test of time. It does not matter the period the film was made, because people can relate to the storyline in each era. The plots are solid. The films are enjoyed generation after generation. I believe Easy A will be joining this group of classic comedies as move generation moves to the next one. What makes Easy A such a great movie, that will last for generations, is its story. About how one lie can change the way everyone see you. It is a relatable and clever movie, with great humor and quotable one-liners. Easy A is about a high school student, Olive Penderghast, played by the talented Emma Stone, finds herself the victim of her school's "rumor mill". When she lies to her best friend Rhiannon, played by Alyson Michalka that she has a date with a nonexistent community college student, so that she doesn’t have to spend the weekend with Rhiannon and her family. How American History Influenced the Movie Industry

...How American History Influenced The Movie Industry? The period of 1960’s is known as one of the most creative periods in the history of the Hollywood filmmaking. It was prominent due to usage of new narrative and style techniques in presenting changes in American values in the film industry at that time. The period of 60’s is known as a period of change, which was carrying an idea that the goal American society sets, can be successfully achieved. The most common topic in the movies of that period was America’s role in the World, as well as it’s controversial position. President of the US at that time, John Kennedy was promising that before the end of the decade men will step on the moon. He also lobbied for the civil right movement and the Civil Rights Act, which emphasized the end of the period of long segregation in the South. The latter finally gave the same amount of equality to Whites and Blacks. However, the decade ended with the Watts riots. All of these occasions summarized gave a clear sign that there was something wrong happening in America. The movies of 60’s were a way to respond to social movements, which were connected with the issues of civil rights, poverty, and feminism. Films were not only the representation of public view on the issues taking place in America, but also presented the favorable outcomes of values and institutions. Movies produced during the 60’s exposed the new figures to the audience. In addition, they presented the ways of thinking and suggested...
