...Whoa! Okay. Stop right there. Before I really get all mushy about PR and its definition, I would first like to tell you something. Usually, I would start my composition with something like the first paragraph. I would talk about PR, its meaning, and then write down what qualities a PR professional must possess. I was originally planning to do just that. When I got home from school last Friday, I immediately sat in front of my desktop computer, meaning to start with this reflection paper. It was 8:08 P.M then. 10…20…50 minutes had passed and I still didn’t have a clue on what to write. I told myself, “It’s okay, this paper isn’t due until Thursday next week anyway. I don’t need to finish it now. I’m off the hook.” Saturday came, and the same thing happened. I just stared on my PC’s screen for 3 hours! Heck, there wasn’t even a single letter on that blank document! It was clean and white! But then again, it’s okay. I told myself that there’s still tomorrow, and the day after that, and then the next, next day after that. Surely by then, I would have come up with something brilliant for this piece. I was totally wrong. I started to panic when Sunday came and I still didn’t know what to do with this paper. “What is wrong with me?! Why couldn’t I write something as simple as this? It’s just a mere reflection paper, for Pete’s sake! IT’S JUST PR!” And then it hit me. Who am I to say that “It’s JUST PR”? Who gave me the right to say something like that when I don’t...

...Ethical Public Relations: Not an Oxymoron1 by Steven R. Van Hook, PhD The Public Relations department is frequently the ethical heart of an organization. Internal and external PR communications control of the flow of good and bad news to the staff and community. The PR team copes with company crises. PR pros sit at the elbows of top officers drafting a company's mission statements, its strategies, its vision. PR people are often put on the spot — if not to determine the morality of a course, at least to help envision the fallout. Fortunately there are valuable touchstone tools for finding our way. We might dive deep into pools of ethical thoughts by such as Bentham, Kant, Rawls and Machiavelli. Ethics theories range from Utilitarianism ("The greatest good for the greatest number") to Deontology ("Do what is right, though the world should perish"). Or, more to the point, we can examine codes of standards through public relations guilds such as the IABC. On a global scale, there's the International Public Relations Association Code of Conduct adopted in Venice in 1961. The CSEP project gathered 850 codes of ethics culled from professional societies, corporations, government, and academic institutions. And we can exercise a quick reality check courtesy of PR Watch, a watchdog group combating "manipulative and misleading PR practices." Throughout the many schools of ethics and conduct, there are some common threads. For example: Don't lie. Ever. One thing we've learned well in recent decades is that the uncovered cover...

...Eric Nkanda PR 222 - Persuasion BAPRM 42648 Media use and the term “PR” We frequently hear people refer to public relations but the practice of public relations is not well understood. The media may be in part to blame for the public’s lack of understanding because they tend to use the term “public relations” inaccurately and focus on some types PR practice while ignoring others. It is important to consider the uses of public relations and its professionals because they shape people’s perceptions of what PR is, when it is used, what PR professionals do, etc. Media portrayals of public relations comparing them with reality are negative (for instance they relate PR with lying) and quite limited. They fail to capture the full range of PR activities and focus mainly on publicity functions. The media often label communications and action as “mere PR” when they really are not what PR professionals would consider public relations. Overall, the media’s use of the term “PR” seems filled with negative connotations. So what do we really understand about public relations? The metaphor of the “marketplace of ideas” is often used to describe the process. Public relations is a way for people to be involved in the marketplace of ideas. It allows them to share and to understand ideas before making a choice (Heath 2005). People need to have their ideas heard so public relations is a means of making those ideas audible. Just as in law, all defendants have the right to a lawyer;...

...‘The Irish electoral system of PR-STV is fundamentally flawed and should be replaced by the Single Member Plurality System (commonly referred to as ‘first past the post’)’. Critically analyse the above statement with a comparison between the two systems identified. 1631 words (including bibliography) Firstly, what is an election system? In my eyes it’s a means of finding the most popular outcome by converting votes casted in an election into government seats. However there countless different types of election systems and the two which we are going to look into and scrutinise right now is the PR-STV system and the Single Member Plurality system. Before delving further into the above controversial statement we must fully understand the meaning and results of both of these systems, beginning with the PR-STV (Proportional Representation-Single Transferable Vote) system. The PR-STV system is by far the least popular of these two systems in terms of countries it is used in, only being used in Ireland and Malta to help elect our (and their) National Parties. It runs on a basis of casting your vote in order of most preferred to least preferred. A quota is then announced and the those who reach the quota is deemed elected and their excess votes are put back in the system and goes towards the next electable candidate on the ballot sheet. The Single Member Plurality system (sometimes known as the ‘first past the post system’) differs greatly...

...The result of all that propaganda was the destruction of Europe and the death of some 50 million people, so it is not surprising that propaganda has negative connotations. Propaganda is also used to keep North Korea’s dictatorial Kim family in power by stirring up hatred of the imperialist USA which – according to the Kims – is determined to destroy them. Propaganda was also used to prevent the Soviet Union from fragmenting, also by positioning the USA as a threat. Propaganda leads to deception and that makes it different with Public Relations(PR). This evil technique was used by Nazi party and it is used in advertisements nowadays. I will argue all these points in this text. There are people who believe that there is beneficial propaganda, that supports noble causes such as mobilizing the nation in the face of nation, promoting equal rights for women or racial minorities and for the sake of improved public health, to give just a few examples. One propaganda campaign that might be considered ethical is the one opposing the practice of female genital mutilation in North Africa, a brutal practice that entails surgery performed by mothers or grandmothers on little girls without the use of sterile instruments or anesthesia; But as known propaganda leads to deception so the thing used here is not propaganda but use of Public Relations which is also an issue in this text; although it has subtle differences with propaganda but it is a completely different thing. Some analysts...

...What is music publishing? It’s essentially your songs. That was easy eh? It has nothing to do with your recordings. This must be remembered. As a music publisher I look after your songs. Songs that YOU’VE written. Just by writing the song you’ve created a copyright; a piece of intellectual property that can be exploited to generate income. (on a side note; the word ‘exploited’ in this usage doesn’t carry the negative connotations you may think it has when you read it elsewhere. To ‘exploit’ in this sense is to simply extract the intrinsic value of something – and your music, no matter how brilliant or rubbish, has value) You have to learn that music publishing and record labels are very different things. It is important that the people who look after your publishing rights and master recording rights have a good relationship, but I’ll come onto that later on. How do you make money from your music publishing rights? There are three main ways your music publishing rights can earn you money: Performance Royalties, Mechanical Royalties and Synchronisation. Performance Royalties Performance royalties are generated when your music has done just that; been performed. This can be either live or a recorded version of your music. The money is collected by an organisation called the PRS for Music which is who we here at Sentric liaise with in order to collect and administer all of your income. The three main types of performance income are from live performances...

...of the ad, however for T.V (Which is the highest paying promotion) you have to pay considerably more compared to the billboard. The benefit is huge if you advertising is to the correct target audience, it would have been viewed by millions at home meaning Apple has earn a considerable amount of potential customers. The cost for Sales promotion isn’t too risky if the product you’ve chosen is backed up by good branding and has a very high demand. It shouldn’t cost too much if the product your promoting isn’t losing you profit. The benefit is you’ll attract more customers with your catchy deal as well as earn a loyal customer. The cost for (PR) Public Relations is none; PR is free method of promotion which requires no initial cost. It’s used to get together with customers as well as increase your brand identity. The benefit is your PR stunt will be remembered by customers, and shows your business cares. The cost for direct selling is probably one of the cheapest methods out them all. This is because it requires small amounts of resources and can cover a large scale of areas. The benefit of this method is you can verbal communicate with the customers and they can get an insight of what your business is all about. The problem is it requires a lot of man power to cover those areas. You have to evaluate your campaign based on...

...Relations blunder(s), is your company headed down the same path? Samsung cancels blogger’s airplane ticket on press trip for refusing to write about brand. Nokia picks up tab (Source Tweet) This is a clear public relations(PR) disaster and I aim to suggest options which can help one handle this better, and possibly prevent it in the future. Samsung tried to force two Indian bloggers attending the IFA trade show in Berlin, to operate as Samsung representatives against their will. Essentially telling them, “Promote our products at IFA or walk home”. Yep you read that right, a blogger was told by a PR representative from Samsung India allegedly over the phone that “you can either be a part of this and wear the uniform, or you’ll have to get your own tickets back home and handle your hotel stay from the moment this call ends.” Note: Every story has multiple sides, I’m sure Samsung has its own story as does the blogger, however, I hope to highlight things which one can learn. This is a PR Disaster I think the correct place to begin is in understanding and acknowledging that this is a public relations disaster. Samsung and it’s agency were clearly not geared to handle this. The story has become quite popular and Samsung’s competitor Nokia has definitely gained some good PR due to this, by helping the stranded blogger. As you’ll learn thru this article, Samsung isn’t a stranger to such a debacle. This isn’t the first time Samsung has trended up the social media channels for the wrong reasons...

...When a random person is tested and the test comes up positive, what is the probability that the person actually has the condition? (Note that this is presumably not the same as the simple probability that a random person has the condition, which is 1 just 20 .) This is an example of a conditional probability: we are interested in the probability that a person has the condition (event A) given that he/she tests positive (event B). Let’s write this as Pr[A|B]. How should we define Pr[A|B]? Well, since event B is guaranteed to happen, we should look not at the whole sample space Ω , but at the smaller sample space consisting only of the sample points in B. What should the conditional probabilities of these sample points be? If they all simply inherit their probabilities from Ω , then the sum of these probabilities will be ∑ω ∈B Pr[ω ] = Pr[B], which in general is less than 1. So 1 we should normalize the probability of each sample point by Pr[B] . I.e., for each sample point ω ∈ B, the new probability becomes Pr[ω ] Pr[ω |B] = . Pr[B] Now it is clear how to define Pr[A|B]: namely, we just sum up these normalized probabilities over all sample points that lie in both A and B: Pr[A|B] := ∑ ω ∈A∩B Pr[ω |B] = Pr[ω ]...

...Entry 1 Week 1 Understanding the definition of ‘Public Relations’ was daunting me from the minute I pressed send on my UCAS application. I had studied Fashion PR at The Fashion Retail Academy so I had a vague idea of what it was all about but began panicking when the thought occurred to me that I might be asked to go for an interview before being offered a place at University. What would I say if someone asked me in an interview what ‘Public Relations’ is? I began my research straight away into finding the perfect definition by purchasing Public Relations for Dummies from Amazon. This gave me a better understanding of what it was all about but it was still very difficult to grasp a short punctual definition of what Public Relations stands for. ‘What is PR?’ was the title for my first lecture which filled me with ease as I then became aware that I probably wasn’t meant to start university knowing exactly what public relations stood for. As the lecture went on it became apparent that actually defining Public Relations is a very difficult task and that there are many definitions, however a main word that comes up again and again when describing public relations is ‘communicating’. Entry 2 Week 2 I have had my first lecture on the module ‘Media and Cultural Landscapes’ finding it challenging and difficult to get my head around but on the other hand extremely interesting. Marxism was a critical theory that we talked about very briefly and as I don’t know a lot about Marxism...

...For unit 7, I decided to use the 2012 Chick-Fila PR disaster as my subject for this assignment. Chick Fila by definition have been a very conservative family business and follow a very biblical definition. Dan Cathy, the COO of Chick Fila sparked massive outrage on their views regarding gay marriage and this questioned their sales, products and services they provide to the fast food industry. From Jeff Swartz, Dan Cathy could have utilized some diplomacy. Rather than leaving the issue to government and politics, Dan Cathy when asked about his views, he said “guilty as charged” which made the situation worse. Just as Jeff Swarz was open to the idea of change and he personally responded to each one of his angry protestors, Chick Fila could have easily practiced good PR considering their position in the fast food industry. In the aftermath, many government officials and public got involved which included protestors and supporters, which hampered but also at the same time grew sales of Chick Fila. Unlike Swartz’s issue, which included supply chain and international suppliers of leather, Chick Fila didn’t have to deal with the issue of operations. There wasn’t strong lobbying for or against Chick Fila’s issue. However, at the same time the Supreme Court of the U.S struck down the Defense of Marriage Act. Afterwards, Dan Cathy tweeted: "Sad day for our nation; founding fathers would be ashamed of our gen. to abandon wisdom of the ages re: cornerstone of strong societies." This shows...
