...Vision Borgonia! Ms. Happ! Mythology & Composition! 13 January 2016! Cycle of the Hero: The DUFF! ! A hero is someone who is admired for courage and noble quails. And as Joseph Campbell would say “ A hero is someone who had given his or her life to something bigger than oneself.” In the movie The DUFF , the main character Bianca is a high school senior surrounded by immature teenagers. although she is a teenager herself she shows hero qualities. The cycle of the hero aka the mono myth is a template of categories that a typical ‘hero’ goes through while on their journey. Not all characters go through all stages of the cycle, some characters skip a stage while others deal with the stages in a different order. In the movie Bianca goes slightly out of order but quickly follows back on track.! Bianca is starting her senior year off with her two best friends Jess and Casey. Bianca doesn't realize it yet but her friends are significantly prettier and more popular then she is. She is also starting another year off with her childhood friend/neighbor Wesley Rush, who just so happens to be the schools football captain. She used to be really close with him as kids but they grew apart through out high school. She currently has a huge crush on a kid named Toby Tucker. She never really had a full conversation with him before because she always got too nervous. ...“Parents always want the best for you,” is a saying you have probably heard multiple times growing up. In Confetti Girl by Diana López, the narrator feels that her father cares more about his books than he does about her. Ultimately, both characters have the impression that their parents are neglecting their needs and wants and have different points of view which contrast those of their parents. As a result, tension arises. From the perspective of the narrator in Confetti Girl, she sees her situation with her father as him being more focused on his work than his own daughter. ...“Body Image” Have you see a fashion show on the television or read a magazine? If you have then you have been exposed to the media revealing models as beautiful. What you don’t know is that a decent percentage of these models are suffering from eating disorders. I trust the media is to blame for our country’s epidemic of eating disorders because, not only do magazines and television portray skinny to be in, but also songs in our nation deliver the attitude. The burdens to encounter the world’s demands to reaching self-satisfaction with one’s body image emotional have influenced the impression of eating disorders. As people are exposed to countless forms of media not only just on television or in a magazine but on the radio, internet & part of our everyday life media being a huge method of communication has been characterized as the leading reason of why people suffer from eating disorders. The role of media profoundly adds to the increase of abnormal eating behaviors within an individual. Without society and the media generating a fabricated image of attractiveness, the calculation of women suffering from eating disorders would decline extremely, women would discontinue trying to grasp a body weight that is unnatural also practically unmanageable to accomplish. Body image has been an ongoing issue in the world and eating disorders are frequently developed, especially in females, in an effort to keep their bodies “fit” and “in shape.” The physical appearance of a person...

...Save as Many as You Ruin In the postmodern society, focus on individuality is a key point. Each person lives in their own reality, and has to figure out their purpose and identity themselves. Simon van Booy’s short story “Save as Many as You Ruin” is about a man named Gerard wandering Manhattan, looking back at his life, trying to reconcile with his past, accepting the choices he’s made. As he wanders through the snow, he meets his old love, and gets a chance to correct some of his past mistakes, and move to a better future. “Save as Many as You Ruin” is set in New York: “Manhattan was once a forest” (p. 2 l. 4). When we meet Gerard it is twilight, when the day ends and the night begins, this term often symbolize rebirth, which fits the story as Gerard walks around in his own thoughts looking back at his life, getting ready to put his past behind him. The language used in the story is not very detailed, and the reader must draw his own conclusions when it comes to the characters: “Her name is Lucy and she is eight. She has short brown hair with Hello Kitty clips pinned cleanly to her head.” (p. 2 l. 18-20). Here we see also see that the author uses references such as Hello Kitty. The dialogues are written in a minimalistic style to make them natural to the reader, for instance the conversation between Gerard and Laurel (p. 3-4), where the sentences rarely exceed four words. The tone of the story is intimate, since most of the time, we find ourselves in Gerard’s mind. There are...

I had to go to school, Elmore High. As I said my goodbyes, I thought, Maybe I should stop asking, I don’t think my Dad will get me a dog, anyway. I has tall, thin, had brown hair, brown eyes. I hopped on the bus, and as I was looking for Izzy, my best friend, she was tall, thin, had blue eyes, and red hair. I heard a loud voice saying, “Emily, I am over here.” When we got off the bus we had to rush to lacrosse practice, because we were late. I was the captain on my lacrosse team, the Sharks....

...In the short story “Save as Many as You Ruin”, written in 2007 by Simon Van Booy, the main character; Gerard, is given due to fate the opportunity to be blessed by new chances in order to save what has been ruined in the past. In the past, before Gerard became a father to a little girl named Lucy, Gerard lived a hectic “businessman’s” life consisting of constant social events including ladies and uncountable amounts of money. More precisely he lived the Hollywood lifestyle. Back then he also enjoyed the promiscuous life where sex was never the same, “He has slept with many women” (p.2, l.34), but despite of this, what Gerard regrets most from his past is his desire to have sex with Izzy: “Gerard vaguely remembers the feeling of being in love with Laurel and the desire to have sex with Izzy. He knew that other men enjoyed the occasional partner outside of long-term relationships, and he wanted to try it.” (p.6, ll. 123-126) Even though he is genuinely in love, for the first time, with Laurel as the above sentence also explains, he commits a crime, which sooner puts on a show of huge regret and his conscience is still being plagued by this mistake. However, accentuating the mood in the story with constant flashbacks of Gerard’s past, the movement of the snow is being mentioned on several occasions for instance in the beginning: “By the time Gerard leaves the office it has stopped snowing” (p.1, l.1) and later on “It suddenly begins snowing again” (p.2, l.25). The snow influences...

...Seminar is a play by Theresa Rebeck that premiered on Broadway in 2011. It follows four aspiring writers who pay for a supposed great writer – Leonard – to come and critique their writing weekly. Each writer is their own personality. There is the rich, uppity, nerd-type (Kate), the quieter, reserved, and talented one (Martin), the ditzy, manipulative, and sexy one (Izzy), and the extravagant, smart, and connected one (Douglas). Leonard is depicted as brash, rude, cruel, and unpardonable. The story goes on to where Martin and Leonard connect and see their similarities and work together to better themselves. A theme that immediately jumps at you is conflict. Throughout the play, there is conflict every other conversation. High tension exists between most characters, especially between those of different sexes. Examples are Kate and Leonard throughout most of the play and Martin and Douglas (though one-sided) in scene one, two, and so on. Another theme that is prevalent is the idea that sex sells and that sex will get you everywhere you want to be. This is shown when Izzy writes a story that Leonard deems sexy, and they proceed to pursue a sexual relationship. It could also be interpreted that sexism could be a theme when sex is not available. When Kate submits a story, being defined as a “prude,” Leonard is bored before ending the first sentence, and is bored with her immediately every time following. That is, until she submits something under the guise of a transvestite...

In “Tortilla Sun”, Izzy’s mother tells Izzy that she’s going to Costa Rica to finish her research. Izzy believes that her mom is acting in a way that neglects her own interests. The differences in points of view of the two stories create tension in both stories. First, in the story “Confetti Girl”, the father wants the girl to be more interested in English. She disagrees and thinks that he is neglecting...

...character very early in the play, which allows a lot of time for character development. The audience gets sense of the type character Douglas, played by Schuyler Scott Mastain, from the very first time we heard him talk. He is very self-involved and self-serving person. We can gather that from the initial conversation in which he doesn’t really converse with any other character or invite them into the conversation. Martin, play by Myles Bullock, interrupts Douglas, unlike the two female characters Martin is not enthralled by the story. The character of Martin is does not appreciate the phony life of the privileged. This along with his reaction to how the price of the apartment the seminar takes place in shows us that he is a struggling writer. Izzy,...

...Office Management Assessment Task 1 Learning Outcome 1 1. There are three types of decision making – strategic, tactical and operational. However the two main ones are strategic and operational. Strategic decision making are long term, high risk decisions which are made by high level management in an organisation. These decisions are unstructured and are most likely to be made after significant planning and research. Tactical decisions which are medium term decisions can be used to help implement a strategic decision. One possible strategic decision that the partners at Classic Interiors could make would be to expand Classic interiors and create a website selling their products. Setting up a company website is a strategic decision as it is a very high risk decision as if the website fails to take off; Classic Interiors will lose a lot of money as costs can be high for setting up a professional website. Setting up a company website is a strategic decision as it is unstructured and a lot of research and information will need to be gathered before the business can start to plan creating their website. Operational decision making are short term, low risk decisions which are made by low level management within an organisation. These decisions tend to be structured and affect the day to day activities of a company. When making operational decisions, there is a circle of points to help when planning and carrying out these decisions. These points are to define the problem...

...1. Ethics: The document discussed how important being eco and ethically friendly is to people nowadays. People want to know how what they are buying is affecting not only the environment but the workers who aided in the production or cultivation of the product. Currently, UK supermarket Tesco is working on producing carbon footprint labels on all 70,000 products that it sells which would allow shoppers to compare carbon impacts. Timberland now has “nutrition labels” on shoe boxes which allow people buying the footwear to learn more about the product they are purchasing. This label includes “where the shoe was manufactured, how it was produced and what effect it has on the environment. Finally, Dole Organic lets consumers “travel to the origin of each organic product”. By typing in a fruit sticker's three-digit Farm Code on Dole Organic's website, customers can read background info, view photos of the farm and workers and learn more about the origin of Dole products.” By allowing consumers to read background info as well as view photos of the farm and workers, Dole is showing that they are both eco and ethically friendly and have nothing to hide. 2. Global production trend: The document discussed how today, more than ever, consumers want to know where their food and products that they purchase come from. People feel more satisfied with purchasing products that come from companies where the workers are treated well and aren’t abused or taken advantage of. 3. Ingredients:...
