...J.K. Rowling vs. Suzanne Collins The Hunger Games Trilogy by Suzanne Collins and The Harry Potter Series by J. K. Rowling have vied for the attention of young readers, not for a long period of time, but have, in their time, blown other books right out of the water. They are some of the most popular books of the 21st Century. Many people favor one series over the other, however both books have made a huge impact in not only literature, but in popular cultural as well. These authors differ greatly in the tone and style of their books, however, they similarly surround much of their work around the subject of violence and war. Both Rowling and Collins are without a doubt amazing authors. Rowling has magnificent imagery and lengthy descriptions that creates a beautiful reality allowing children to get lost in their fantasies of a magical world full of wonder and possibilities. “Perched atop a high mountain on the other side [of a black lake], its windows sparkling in the starry sky, was a vast castle with many turrets and towers” (Rowling, 276). It provided young and old readers alike with a magical safe haven. Collins has a very different writing style, though quite contrasting to that of Rowling, she creates a masterpiece just as great. Her universe is so much more daunting, although lacking in magic, she creates a world with some parallels to our own, filled with corrupt political society and broken government. The science fiction trilogy takes place in a future...

...J.K Rowling; An Ordinary Person, Leading an Extraordinary Life “By every usual standard, I was the biggest failure I knew.” A quote said by J.K Rowling; one of the most famous and successful authors of our time. The creator of the Harry Potter series, a series bringing in over a billion dollars and translated in 73 different languages. However, Rowling was not always such a successful character, she had built her success from the ground up. Her perseverance and her drive to triumph ruled over all failures, and she worked past all of the hardships life threw her away until she was at the top. Joanne Rowling was born in Yate, England on July 31, 1965, and grew up loving books even as a young girl. Her dream of being a writer had bloomed at age 6, and she continued to hold onto that dream for the rest of her life. ...J.K. Rowling Bobbie Sue Hill AIU Online J.K. Rowling From living in poverty, on public assistance, to widely famous, accomplished writer, J.K. Rowling has had a roller-coaster of a life. Rowling is known world-wide by her ever popular Harry Potter books. There is, however, more to Rowling than meets the eye. The struggles she faced and the end result of her fight for a better life has made for a wonder experience for me to research. Joanne Kathleen Rowling also known as J.K. Rowling wrote a series of books that has made her more money than she could have ever imagined. Some have said it to have made her wealthier than the Queen of England. “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” began as “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” which contained Rowling’s personal annotations and illustrations. Sold at a Sotheby’s auction to an anonymous bidder, “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” raised $239,932.44 for her own charity and English PEN. (jkrowling.com) Her first book was “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” published in 1997 and was an immediate success. Following was “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” published in 1998, “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban” published in 1999, “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire” published in 2000, “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix” published in 2003, and finally “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” published in 2007. ...Jayme Vallance ENG 282 Dr. Treftz Short Paper #2 The Power of Love and Harry Potter The power of love in Harry Potter is unlike any other. So much so that it is an overwhelmingly significant and recurring theme throughout the entire series. From the self-sacrificial love of Lily Potter to the loving mother Molly Weasley to the unrequited love of Severus Snape. There is also the misunderstanding, or the absence, of love; which is equally as important in the novels. Especially since it was the main difference between Voldemort and Harry that was incredibly essential to the storyline. So essential that J.K. Rowling went out of the way to tell us about it in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone when Dumbledore said, “if there is one thing Voldemort cannot understand, it is love” (229, SS). The concept of love is woven so inextricably within the very fabric of the novels, that it continues to challenge the reader all the way until the very end. One of the widely known main principles of magic is its inability to create real, true love. Which is why fictional characters have been known to dabble with one of the darker aspects of love in novels: love potions. They do exactly what is expected, which is to make the victim become obsessed and completely infatuated with the intended target for a certain amount of time. All while being completely unaware of such actions. The idea of being able to control someone that you can’t have with love is an alluring concept for many. It’s...

...aimed primarily at children. Authors use a variety of techniques whilst writing books for this genre in order to make sure that they are reaching out to their target audience. One example of such a technique is the use of short sentences. These are used in order to keep the reading relatively simplistic, yet double up to make for a dramatic, or tense part of a story. Another one of these techniques is merely keeping the wording of the story simple. This not only makes reading easier, but also allows the reader, mainly a child, to read quickly, and develop a clear understanding of exactly what is happening in the novel or story. During this essay, I am going to consider Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban of the Harry Potter series by J.K Rowling, and Peter and Wendy of the Peter Pan series by J.M Barrie Any book in the Harry Potter series may be the perfect choice for such an essay due to the fact they are all unbelievably popular with readers of all ages. “As of June 2011, the book series has sold about 450 million copies, making it the best-selling book series in history, and has been translated into 67 languages.” As Harry Potter himself is the same age as the target audience, it allows the children reading the story to relate to him, and wish and wonder what it would be like to be like Harry Potter, and overcome the challenges that he has to in his wizarding world. In my experience, books within the genre of children’s literature are often very descriptive, for example...

...Corey Ewald AP English Lit. And Comp. 9.18.13 Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows vs. Twilight Obviously thousands of people around the world have either read Twilight by Stephenie Meyer, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J.K. Rowling, or both; but not everyone has noticed the similarities and differences between the two. Both franchises remain very successful, and there is a question; “Is Stephenie Meyer the next J.K. Rowling?” The novels are extremely well-known and of the fantasy genre, but have numerous differences, from themes and content to writing style and structure. The books are of the same genre and have related themes, but have attracted a vast difference in readers. While similar in many aspects, the two novels bare many differences as well. Twilight can be summarized as a romance, fantasy novel about a girl, Bella, who moves to a new town and ends up falling in love with a vampire named Edward, while Harry Potter is the tale of a boy who lives with horrid relatives and finds out he’s actually a famous wizard in a secret, magical world unknown to non-magic folk, also known as “muggles”. One of the few similarities the two books have in plot is that there is a hidden world of magic or fantastical creatures concealed from the rest of humanity. An equally important difference is that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is a complex tale in which minor characters and small objects have just as big an impact on the plot as the main characters...

...from mistakes. It would be just to say that setbacks teach us more than triumphs. Thomas Edison failed more than a thousand times before he created the first light-bulb in the history of mankind. Joanne Rowling, nowadays the richest woman in the world, could hardly make her living at the beginning of her career. Will Wright, a famous computer games designer, hires people based on how many failures they have experienced in the process of production. Thomas Edison is well known in relation to overcoming failure. In his early years, teachers told Edison that it was impossible to teach him anything due to the lack of talent. Work was no better, as he was fired from his first two jobs for not being productive enough. He was a master of “trial and failure”. When asked about the many thousands of failures he had when trying to create the light-bulb he famously said, “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.“ All those unsuccessful attempts finally resulted in the design that worked and brought the life of mankind to a higher level. Before J.K. Rowling made a fortune publishing the series of novels about Harry Potter she was nearly penniless, severely depressed, divorced, trying to raise a child on her own while attending school and writing a novel. Rowling went from depending on welfare to survive to being one of the richest women in the world in a span of only five years through her hard work and determination. When she was giving a speech in Harvard, she...

...J.K. Rowling has written many strong female characters. I feel as though they all teach us their own lessons. My favorite ones I learned were from Hermione Granger, Luna Lovegood, and Molly Weasley. Hermione Granger is very important to young girls in how they develop and grow into women. It’s hard for girls to have such a great role model, and one that thrives to be the smartest and has a thirst for knowledge is imperative. Reading about Hermione and her love of books and being a good student made me feel that it was okay that I was the same way growing up. No girl should feel like they have to dumb themselves down, and I believe Hermione was helpful in our generation in this aspect. Luna Lovegood was great for being the weirdo that she was. She taught us that it is okay to be yourself and to not care what others think. This one I think took me until college to grasp. I don’t think I was ever comfortable being my weird self in high school. Though once I got to college I met many other odd ducks who accepted me for being me. Luna is essential in this way, and I thank Rowling for bringing such an odd, loveable character into the books. Molly Weasley was important to me because she is a mother that is always there for her children, and is not too old to be a badass when it comes to fighting for them. She reminds me of my mother who I know would do anything for me even if I was being the biggest brat. They both have that unconditional love, and Molly helped me recognize...

...fire-spewing dragon that has taken refuge on his land. The intense battle between Beowulf and the dragon end in the death of both opponents. Beowulf left behind a long and great legacy that leaves his people speechless and heart-broken for their fallen hero. Even though this Anglo-Saxon epic was written between the fifth and seventh century, it carries many similarities to modern day society. The similarities can be seen in modern literature and pop culture, the comitatus, the various struggles that occur, and the qualities that make up a great leader. The poem epic has left a huge print on modern day writers and pop culture. Its influence can be seen in many modern fantasies from J. R. R. Tolkien’s epic trilogy “Lord of the Rings” and J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series. J. R. R. has been known to be one of the few scholars that have seriously contributed his works to Beowulf. In “Beowulf: The Monsters and the Critics” he states how Anglo-Saxon literature had a long-lasting effect on present thoughts. Similarities between the Anglo-Saxon themes and ideas can be found throughout the trilogy along with the Old English derivation of the character and location names. For example, the root word searu-, which means "treachery” or “cunning,” appears in the name Saruman – whom devoted Tolkien fans will recognize as a major antagonist in the fantasy novels; and the Old English word for earth, middan-geard, becomes Middle-earth, the aptly-named fantasy world of the novels (neh)....
