“I’m not black…I'm not african American either, I'm a nigger” this quote is from near the beginning of the book when JT and Sudhir started talking about an interview question he was assigned “how does it feels to be black and poor” which JT later said “niggers can't find work” the two main characters are named Sudhir and JT, JT is a name given to him by Sudhir to protect his identity. Sudhir is an indian that moved to America when he was really young, he is vegetarian which caused some problems, and he considers himself as a special type of sociologist that basically lives with the people he studies. From there he studied gang life and the people affected by it and how gangs can benefit the community and how they can also ruin it. One day sudhir and JT got in an argument and JT challenged sudhir to take on his role for a day, this is where the gang leader for a day part comes in which is my least favorite part of the book because it is only for a day and not much actually happened despite being the main highlight of the book. A little before that and a lot after that it talks about his impact on the community of robert taylor and how the community affected him. Towards the end of the book it slows down a lot because JT had been promoted to a more powerful gang leader with a greater power over the BK faction and sudhir went to California which made it more difficult to communicate but they still got together every once in
