It can be argued that the shows Family Guy and The Simpsons, are similar in nature. It is a poor argument. Granted these shows are certainly vulgar and often satirical as well, but they lack the edginess of South Park. These shows include a family, mild language, and safer plots. The FOX network is only going to allow for so much, so a mild show is all that can be produced; mild in the way of a wine cooler to a shot of liquor. South Park pushes the boundaries, not only because they want to, but because the can. The show truly has explored many subjects, such as; starving Ethiopians and a Jabba the Hut Sally Struthers, Scientology being a scam, intentionally inducing testicular cancer in order to receive medicinal marijuana, an entire episode on Dickens’ Great Expectations, a statue of the virgin Mary bleeding from her backside onto Randy’s face to cure him of his alcoholism, and portraying the societies persecution and obsession with Britney Spears in a Lottery style scenario, where a parent hands a camera to a child and they “stone” to death Britney Spears with camera flashes.
