...The relationship between the music industry and the classic leather jacket is a historic and detailed one. Both have complimented one another over the years, setting each other's cultural representation and aiding in their popularity. ...Changes Of Bilbo Baggins Since its first publication in 1937, The Hobbit has been rendered into more than a dozen film adaptations. Each of these films portrays a new perspective to the original work with variations big and small. Essentially, the movie versions can be seen as interpretations of Tolkien’s text since visual media cannot fully convey the events and character entirely. Once put on a screen, the plot must be shortened to fit the running time, character simplified and made symbolic. A case in hand is the 2012 movie edition directed by Peter Jackson. The main difference between the film and the text is that the movie focuses more, maybe too much on the character Bilbo Baggins. As a result, in Tolkien’s text the story is told by an omniscient narrator whereas the movie from Bilbo’s Perspective. Tolkien’s description of Bilbo reflects the culture and underpinnings of Middle-earth during the third age by presenting him as a “Baggins”, a well-respected family among the Hobbit community, an eager adventurer and a philosopher who is a product of his time while the movie presents him as a cowardly man, afraid of the world outside of the Shrine. Consequently, viewers of The Hobbit see Bilbo differently, which dilutes Tolkien’s portrayal of Bilbo’s personality trait as a hero. Firstly, in Tolkien’s narrative text, the themes of heroism and Bilbo’s character development from being an average hobbit into the hero at the end of the story looms largely not only as an exposition...

...RICK RIORDAN THE CROWN of PTOLEMY A Percy Jackson/Kane Chronicles Adventure PUFFIN Contents The Crown of Ptolemy ABOUT THE AUTHOR Rick Riordan is the creator of the award-winning, bestselling Percy Jackson series and the thrilling Kane Chronicles and Heroes of Olympus series. Don’t miss his new series: Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard. According to Rick, the idea for the Percy Jackson stories was inspired by his son Haley. But rumour has it that Camp Half-Blood actually exists, and Rick spends his summers there recording the adventures of young demigods. Some believe that, to avoid a mass panic among the mortal population, he was forced to swear on the River Styx to present Percy Jackson’s story as fiction. Rick lives in Boston, Massachussetts, (apart from his summers on Half-Blood Hill) with his wife and two sons. Next to me, pressed against the wall of the old fort, Annabeth peered into the rain, waiting for magical teenagers to fall out of the sky. ‘Are you doing it right?’ she asked me. ‘Gee¸ I dunno. I’m pretty sure his name is pronounced Carter.’ ‘Try tapping the hieroglyph multiple times.’ ‘That’s stupid.’ ‘Just try it.’ I stared at my hand. There wasn’t even a trace of the hieroglyph that Carter Kane had drawn on my palm almost two months back. He’d...

...July 24, 2016, E-Team Week Seven, Day One; Despite the oncoming heat wave, it was a relatively nice day as I pulled into the parking lot (which doubled as a soccer field) next to the longhouse in which I would be spending the next three weeks of my life. I would be operating the Ropes course at the YMCA Camp Ernst: Zipline, Burma Bridge, Airwalk, Giant Swing, Rock Wall, and Low Ropes. Stepping out of the car, I could already feel my face burning a crimson red as I anxiously invented a multitude of ways that this experience could go wrong, as I am wont to do. ‘No’ I mentally scolded myself, ‘This is it. This is the year you step out of your comfort zone and don’t care what people think. Now go join that group over there.’ I approached a group...

...Title: Unit 5 Fallacies Kaplan University February 11, 2014 Unit 5 Fallacies Part I: Mom, you know how much I love animals, right? Well, yesterday I just happened to be passing by an animal shelter, and wanted to stop in and take a look at all of those poor dogs that are going to be put to sleep. I know you told me that I couldn’t have any more pets, but there was this one dog; his name is “Butterscotch," and he was scheduled to be executed that same day, and well; I just couldn’t let them stick those huge needles in him, hurting him, and killing him for no reason. Anyway, I hope you don’t mind, but I brought him home with me. You know; I remember you telling me when you were a kid; you did the same thing, so I can’t see how this would be any different from what you used to do. Besides, I’ll take care of him, feed him, and you won’t have to do anything; I promise. If you let me keep him, I will promise to do all of my chores and never argue with you again, please! You know; I was talking to my friend the other day, and she told me that shelters actually like killing dogs, they sell the dog remains to a company that makes dog food out of them. I’m not sure where she heard this, but she loves dogs, so I know she’s right. My friend said they make more money that way, so they really don’t care about these dogs at all; it’s always about people's greed and how much money they can make. If I can save at least one dog from becoming dog food, I would be happy. ...

Introduction: Alexander McQueen (17 March 1969 – 11 February 2010) was a British designer and couturier, best known for his in-depth knowledge of British tailoring and his ability to both shock his audience with raw presentations often depicting bleak history and anarchic politics. McQueen was openly gay and said he realised his sexual orientation when very young. He told his family when he was 18 and, after a rocky period, they accepted his sexuality. He described coming out at a young age by saying, "I was sure of myself and my sexuality and I've got nothing to hide. ...oday's technology is already producing a marked shift in the way we think and behave, particularly among the young. I mustn't, however, be too censorious, because what I'm talking about is pleasure. For some, pleasure means wine, women and song; for others, more recently, sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll; and for millions today, endless hours at the computer console. But whatever your particular variety of pleasure (and energetic sport needs to be added to the list), it's long been accepted that 'pure' pleasure - that is to say, activity during which you truly "let yourself go" - was part of the diverse portfolio of normal human life. Until now, that is. Now, coinciding with the moment when technology and pharmaceutical companies are finding ever more ways to have a direct influence on the human brain, pleasure is becoming the sole be-all and end-all of many lives, especially among the young. We could be raising a hedonistic generation who live only in the thrill of the computer-generated moment, and are in distinct danger of detaching themselves from what the rest of us would consider the real world. This is a trend that worries me profoundly. For as any alcoholic or drug addict will tell you, nobody can be trapped in the moment of pleasure forever. Sooner or later, you have to come down. I'm certainly not saying all video games are addictive (as yet, there is not enough research to back that up), and I genuinely welcome the new generation of "brain-training" computer...

...I’m twelve years old and in sixth grade. I am not going to tell you what I look like, because I don’t have enough time. As I mentioned, I have this weird power. You are probably thinking, Why would this not bring good? Well, this is why I am writing to you all. Let me tell you some of my wishes. One of my wishes was that my older siblings disappeared. Another one was I wished I had younger siblings. Those times, I only got sent to my room, but this time was not going to be like that. It was a rainy day. I was reading my favourite book in the Percy Jackson series. I had this weird idea to wish that all the Percy Jackson characters came to life; that is where I made my mistake. So I wished all the characters were real. When I wished that, it also meant the monsters in Percy Jackson lived. Worst and best wish ever! For a while, I didn’t know the monsters existed, until they were at my front door. At that moment, I told myself, “How stupid am I? Monsters are characters too!” My parents looked directly at me when they saw the monsters. They said, “What did you do this time? And why did you wish up mythical creatures?” My parents had to call the police, because the monsters were ripping apart my house. The police didn’t know what to do about it. I totally forgot demigods were in my house that could kill the...

Now back in his hometown, everyone remembers the tragedy that changed his—and Sophie Cooper’s—lives forever. He desperately needs Sophie’s help with little Lucy. But spending time with Keeton seems to remind Sophie of all she lost. She won’t get close to another bull rider. Yet one sweet baby girl has her own way of bringing two hearts together. “What am I going to do with her, Sophie?” Keeton asked. “I’d say the same thing parents have done with babies for hundreds of years. Take her home and raise her.” “I’m a bull rider. I’m on the road almost fifty percent of the time. I’m living in a house that isn’t even livable.” Bull rider. That reminder had Sophie stepping back in her car, away from him, away from the tug on her heart and back into her shell. “Yes, well, I’d say you’d better get it livable.” “You could help me.” “I did. I changed the nastiest diaper in the history of diapers.” She glanced at her watch. “I’m late.” “We have to talk about the land.” “Later.” “Dinner?” He leaned in, holding tight to Lucy. “Nope. I don’t date bull riders.” She started her car and reached to close the door. He stood there, not moving. “I’m not asking you out.” Ouch. That hurt a little, for some crazy reason. “Good, I’m not accepting.” “Fine, I’ll see you later,” he said with...
