Abstract:

This project was a review of the Jacksonville Shipyards Case, In the Shipyards case, Lois Robinson is mistreated in the workplace for being a woman in an industry dominated by men. Robinson put the work in to be just as skilled as any of the men that she worked with, but because she was the minority, she was put in many uncomfortable situations.

Jacksonville Shipyards

Even though the behavior of the male coworkers were morally objectionable, management should have attempted to prevent it as part of their ethical responsibility to the employees. Employees were required to get permission to post any material in the workplace; permission was denied for some requests but pictures of nude women were displayed with the full knowledge of management (Boatright, J. 2009). I feel that even with the companies approval the photos where offence to the female employees of the organization. The employee should never have to handle an issue as this when management approves material that is offensive to others. The work place should not be a place that employees dread attending, and Robinson’s experience was full of distress so management should have helped make her feel comfortable at work. Although, Title VII specifically states that it prohibits sex discrimination, the Commission issued guidelines in 1980 stating sexual harassment is a violation of Title VII, found criteria for determining “when unwelcome conduct of sexual nature constitutes sexual harassment , defining the circumstances under which an employer may be held liable, and suggesting affirmative steps an employer should take to prevent sexual harassment”.
