I enjoyed reading your discussion assignment and can certainly understand why you selected Jamaican culture as a culture that interests you. Jamaican culture is a beautiful amalgamation of African, British Colonial, and Caribbean cultures. Subsequently, Jamaica’s culture is diverse and multi-facetted, despite the country’s relatively small size. Nonetheless, aspects of their business culture tend to be more homogenous, as the predominance of Jamaican businesses utilizes a hierarchical approach to decision making. Therefore, when combined with a penchant for being extremely detail oriented, it often takes Jamaican businesses more time to make decisions than most American business people are accustomed to. Nevertheless, the Jamaican business

World Music

...INTRODUCTION This research paper is a specific study of one of the African dance musical genre-reggae, which was first developed in Jamaica in the late 1960s. The music of Jamaica includes Jamaican folk music and many other popular genres. Therefore, Jamaican popular music since 1960 can be roughly divided into four eras each of which had a distinctive beat – ska, rocksteady, reggae, and dancehall. (Chang and Chen W, 1998, x) But this African dance musical genre “reggae” has gained immense popularity since it was first introduced in the music world and since then it is one of the most popular genres of music. Hence, it is one of the most significant music genres in Western musical market. In my paper, the focus of the reggae music genre is from 1965 till 1975 as these were considered as the major years or a decade for reggae music when it flourished. This was the time period during which the culture of reggae music was civilized and spread widely in the parts of Jamaica. Bob Marley is known as one of the best artists of this genre and the impact he made and contributed has made beyond the shores of Jamaica and globally as well. Reggae was created by the Jamaicans and still it is the only music genre which is so much popular and not created by Europeans or Americans. It has gained immense popularity since its introduction and in the recent years as well that it is the first model in which a third world country is exporting, selling, and trading its culture to various audience...

Has the Current Crop of Musicians in the Caribbean Region Deviated from This Practice of Being the Voice of the Voiceless

...University of the West Indies Open Campus – St. Lucia Name: Cecilia Clovis I.D. No.: 309100682 Course Code: FOUN1301 Course Title: Law, Governance, Economy and Society Course Coordinator: Mr. Orville Beckford E-tutor: Mr. Lance Gibbs Assignment No.: 2 Date: June 26, 2012 Historically, Jamaican and other Caribbean musicians gave the world a conscience as they became the ‘voice for the voiceless’ not just at home, but also internationally. Has the current crop of musicians in the region deviated from this practice? Explain your response. The Caribbean is home to many of the world’s greatest and renowned musicians. Musical icons like Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Mighty Sparrow and Jimmy Cliff worked hard; and with their great musical talent were able to use their music to inspire and create a level of consciousness in black people of the region and all over the world. These men, through the lyrical content of their music touched the lives of the down trodden, lifted the spirit of the hopeless and stirred in the hearts of men and women the passion to fight against the injustices of their own region and in so doing sensitised the universal world. Bob Marley’s music is just as popular today as it was in the early seventies when he released the single ‘Get Up, Stand Up’ and has continued to live on even in his absence. His music and that of his fellow counterparts; has continued to be the voice for the voiceless, regionally and internationally...

The Viability of the Decriminalization of Marijuana for Medical Use and Its Benefit to Jamaica

...words from a popular song by the renowned dance hall artist Adijah Palmer. This is typical of the messages that are conveyed through the lyrics of many popular Jamaican songs today, but is this the most rewarding use of marijuana? Would the development of a medical marijuana industry prove more beneficial to Jamaica? Would the decriminalization of marijuana in order for such an industry to be enacted be economically viable? Other questions to ask ourselves are, what is Decriminalization and how would decriminalization of marijuana help with enacting a medical marijuana industry? According to the Merriam-Webster decriminalization means “to remove or reduce the criminal classification or status of; especially: to repeal a strict ban on while keeping under some form of regulation”. Marijuana currently is a banned drug in Jamaica and for Jamaica to develop a medical marijuana industry which would therefore means large scale production of the drug for scientific research and medicine production. The drug would have to be legalized on a certain level to facilitate such. Note in the above definition for decriminalization it made mention of the drug being kept under some form of regulation which for this research basically means certain punitive usage of the drug would still be rendered as illegal. The scope of this research paper will cover areas such as, the economic state of the country and its ability to facilitate and withstand such an industry, the illicit use of the drug, implementations...

Since most of today's consumers, even those in the upper-income strata, are dollar- and value-conscious, price and value will be the key marketing concepts of this decade. Another recent change is the increased emphasis on creative, high-impact marketing promotions that generate restaurant traffic and increase guestroom occupancies. It is hard times but influencing consumer perception is critical for restaurants that not only sell food but also treats or snacks or beverages. Urban spaces and working-class expressions across the black Atlantic: tracing the routes of ska. Retrieved from http://rhr.dukejournals.org/cgi/reprint/2003/87/183.pdf (Heathcott, 2003) The first wave of ska was the main focus of this article the first wave erupted in the early 1960s out of the energetic dance hall culture of urban Jamaica among working-class youth cobbling together old island traditions and new forms of expression from arrange of materials found in American, British, and Jamaican popular culture. I was introduced to the real definition of Rude Boy they said they were a suit and tie hooligan bent on turf protection and the defiance of adult authority. This matched what I had in mind when I thought of the rude boys I know today. I learned that many artists associated with the global reggae explosion of the 1970s, such as Bob Marley, Bunny Livingstone, Toots Hibbert, and Lee “Scratch” Perry, got their start as young Rude Boy instrumentalists in ska bands. By the late 1960s, Marley and other stars began to slow down the tempo of ska, launching experiments with the genre that would result in rocksteady and reggae music. Before reading this I had always thought that reggae and rocksteady came before the upbeat ska music was formed. This article gave me a lot of good information about the first wave of Ska and how Ska came to be in the first place...

Culture and Socialization

...Question:“Define “culture”. How does socialization influence the culture of a society? Discuss, giving examples of different methods and types of socialization used by the various groups in your society and how they contribute to the culture of the society.” “Culture is one of the two or three most complicated words in the dictionary.”Raymond Williams (1976).The topic of culture is a big study for sociologists in that there are many different societies. Culture plays a very vital role in our societies; each society has its own individual culture some of which are similar. A society can be seen as a group of people who interact with each other and also share common interest. According to Haralambos and Holborn (2008), in order to understand the social context of human behavior one has to understand the culture of the society to which they belong. Linton (1945) defines culture as ‘the way of life of its members; the collection of ideas and habits which they learn, share and transmit from generation to generation” (Mustapha, 2007).The process in which we acquire such knowledge is called socialization. The way in which we socialize influences the culture of the society. In Each society there are also different methods of socialization and types of socialization. Throughout this paper I will show how these methods and types of socialization help to contribute to the culture of society. Our culture is a huge part of our everyday life. There are different ways in which socialization...

...Business Ethical Values in Mainland China, the U. S. and Jamaica,” writes about the results of a second research performed that compares what has been considered third world countries, Mainland China and Jamaica, to the United States (U. S.), and how each countries culture impacts ethical decision making in businesses. The study contained five vignettes and two hypotheses. The vignettes were scenarios in which the subjects responded to, according to what they believed were ethical or those that were not. This paper will cover the culture that impacts China and Jamaica, the results of the research and ethics plays a role in decision making for financial, environmental, and cultural issues; how the concepts of positive and normative economics are reflected; and how market efficiency, economizing, and the market system affects these ethical issues in each country compared to the U. S. Ethics in Financial, Environmental, and Cultural Issues Mainland China was a socialist-based economy that converted to free market over 25 years ago. China’s culture is founded upon Confucian and Maoist, rather than capitalist, which impacts ethical decisions made by Chinese business leaders (Fok, Hartman, & Kwong, 2005). Globalization

...Abstract Economic globalization has augmented worldwide trade, investments, technology transfer, and communication as well the competition and dependencies between nations. The growth of liberalization in telecommunications and Internet has accentuated these effects creating a truly global village. The observable heterogeneity of the global growth process led to a large body of empirical and theoretical research with the main conclusion that the hypothesis of absolute convergence formerly predicted by growth economists does not hold. That is, not all countries do automatically converge to the same steady state position. As a result, depending on a number of factors, countries would tend to cluster on certain "conditional convergent equilibria". These will depend on essentially the investment rate, human capital endowment, the R&D intensity and integration into world markets. Further, empirical results strongly support the hypothesis that only countries with sufficient abilities to innovate or acquire new technologies are able to converge in terms of their productivity levels and income. Keywords: Globalization, Economic Growth, Innovation Globalization (Cheal, 1997) defines economic globalization as, A process of increasing economic integration between two countries, bringing about the emergence of a global marketplace, or a single world market (p 647). Despite the fact that globalization has been in the making for the past couple of decades. Ever since...
