In 1607 the King of England granted and approved a charter to explore and colonize Jamestown in Virginia. The charter was shown to him by the Virginia Company of London. After a couple months of sea travel, Jamestown was colonized and they began to flourish. The colony began to flourish due to encouragement of a stricter social structure; and also, the creation of a political balance was created though the making of The House of Burgesses in 1619. The southern colonies were lucky enough to be settled on very fertile land. Having fertile land encouraged both subsistence and commercial farming which was a big part of the everyday life style. Commercial farming, which was what encouraged slavery, was mainly for the richer families who had more power. Subsistence farming was mainly for the poorer families in the community. A huge social aspect that was apart of the southern colonies that participated in commercial farming was slavery because it did help create the idea of “the more land you owned the more power you had.” The colonies flourished due to slaves being able to do the work for the colonists without cost. Therefore, farming helped socially build the colony where people were forced to work together creating strict social structure. …show more content…
An elected assembly first met in The House of Burgesses in Jamestown to discuss enacting legislations. These actions to create the assembly helped the southern colonies flourish because it allowed a system of government to form in order to create laws or petition anything they felt was wrong. Another reason The Virginia Company of London created The House of Burgesses was to encourage more people from Europe to take the voyage over to Virginia and settle in order to farm and mine for gold. Overall, The House of Burgesses allowed colonist a voice in the creation and petition of laws in order to make life as a new settler

...Jamestown was the first permanent settlement for Britain established in 1607 on the Virginian coast. In theory it should have been a highly successful settlement. However through the combination of environmental food and human issues it barely survived. The main issue that caused the destruction of Jamestown was ultimately human error. This essay will be analyzing which errors committed by the citizens of Jamestown and their rulers in England mainly caused the destruction of this settlement. Firstly, one main issue that was caused by humans was the food crisis. It could have been wholly avoided if they had managed their resources and time better. For example when they first arrived they spent many months searching for gold instead of creating...

...Jamestown was the greatest colony New England ever made because it changed life, we persevered through struggle, and because of Jamestown, we have come so far in technology. New England made a great choice to put a colony in Virginia. The Virginia Company of London, a group of investors who hoped to profit from the venture, sponsored the colony. Chartered in 1606 by King James I, the company also supported English national goals of counterbalancing the expansion of other Europeans seeking a northwest passage to the Orient. The ships Susan Constant, Godspeed, and Discovery left the ports of New England in December 1606 carrying 105 passengers. Only one of those 105 people died along the voyage. In April 1607, the ships landed on the shores...

...The Historical Significance of the Jamestown Colony Jamestown is referred to as the “First Colony” in popular culture, however, in my opinion, Jamestown is more akin to a “stepping stone” for the colonization of North America. The Jamestown colony is tremendously significant in history and shows us the settlers motive of colonization, as well as their reasoning for settling in the area they chose. Again, the Jamestown colony was a key checkpoint in the European race for North America. The English settlers main purpose for traveling to the New World was gold, which unfortunately was not easily found on the east coast. As well as gold, the settlers also travelled for religious freedom and monetary gains. In an article by ushistory.org, they...

...There were many problems that caused mortality in Jamestown but there were some significant ones that were most detrimental. These problems were Jamestown’s drought, food shortages, and Indian attacks. All of these problems were brought onto the English due to Jamestown’s location. To begin, Jamestown’s deaths were influenced by its calamitous drought. This drought was stated in the document “The Lost Colony and Jamestown Droughts” to have roughly started around 1607 and lasted until about 1613. The English relied greatly on the river and creeks for water as stated in the document “Jamestown Environment by Dennis B. Blanton”. They dug shallow wells to collect water from these creeks or river that were very vulnerable to drought and salt water intrusion. Due to this the English suffered severely when it the drought began. The English had little to no water to drink or use for farming. This led to many deaths from starvation and/or dehydration. That is how Jamestown’s drought influenced its mortalities. Furthermore, Jamestown’s deaths were influenced by its food shortage. Jamestown did not have a surplus of food that the English could eat. This made them rely on fish which would come in great amounts but only during spring and early summer...

...In 1603, Queen Elizabeth had died. The next in power to take her place was her Scottish cousin, King James I. Once he was in power he instantly signed an agreement with Spain which ended decades of warfare. This meant anyone who was living off warfare at that time would have had to find a new source for money. Those who were living off warfare were the ones that joined supporters of colonization so the establishment of new colonies in North America could happen. The establishment of the Jamestown colony in the Cheasapeake region and the New England colonies developed in various ways. Due to the differences, I believe that the establishment of the New England colonies would become more typical of what would later be called the United States....

...10 men originally settled in Early Jamestown, but by the end of the first winter only 40 survived. The English came to America in 1607 to be the first permanent English settlement in the New World. They settled in a place that they soon called Jamestown, Virginia and the joint stock company called The Virginia Company, helped pay for the settlement. All of the first settlers were men and by then end of the first six months, 80 percent of them died. Early Jamestown was a colony of English settlers in America that lasted from the years 1607-1611. Something that puzzles historians is how many colonists died in Early Jamestown. Many colonists in Early Jamestown died because of environmental issues, their relationships with Native Americans and their lack of settler skills. The first reason why so many settlers in Early Jamestown died was because of the environmental issues. Brackish water was the only water made available to the settlers in Jamestown. Brackish water contains salt and is not sanitary to drink. You could drink and drink this water but never get hydrated from it. Diseases and bad health resulted...

...the people who came, to the obstacles they had to overcome, and how the colony became successful. In the year of 1605 a company made of British merchants asked King James I for the right to create an establishment in North America in the region of Virginia. One year later, the king granted this request. The investors in this journey formed a joint-stock company, which they called the London Company. On April 26, 1607 the first group of one hundred five colonists from the London Company arrived in Jamestown, Virginia. Most of the people who came were adventurers with little or no farming experience or other useful skills. This led to the first major problem in the colony of Jamestown. Life in the colonies was extremely hard and these problems only made life worse. Because of the lack of people with farming experience there was a lack of food for the settlers. There was a lack in preparation for the trip in other areas as well, especially in the area that they chose to settle in. Jamestown was fifty miles away from the coast, and located in a very marshy area. Because of this location, mosquito carried...
