Imagine you are a consultant who has come to the Hasbro Office to discuss moving on from the debacle of Hasbro Interactive. You need to show that you understand the problem, understand the causes of the debacle, and have some recommendations for what HR practices may mitigate these problems happening in the future. Your task is to create 10 minute presentation to the management team which will be delivered electronically.
Step 1: Read the Hasbro Case available on LMS under the Assessment button.
Step 2: Lots of potential problems potentially contributed to the downfall of Hasbro interactive. Choose what you think are the most important factors in the failure of the business. Below are a number of quotes from the case that identify possible issues for you to focus on.
Innovation/Conflict Issue: Ms. Daya’s changes were not welcomed at Hasbro Interactive, where employees bristled at anything that they perceived could dampen innovation and creativity
Communication Issue: “We have Hasbro personnel at Hasbro Interactive. They do not feel the need to consult with us because they believe that they know what is going on with the brand. But they can’t do the research that we do and they don’t have the consumer insights that we use to manage our business.”
Ethics/Risk Issue: “I learned that there is a fine line between investment and loss. Herb Baum would talk investment and Al Verrecchia would talk about loss and they were both talking about the same expenditures.”
Motivation Issue: “Everybody in Silicon Valley was throwing options around, and every potential hire wanted to know when we were going public. Greed became the mentality, and it became very disconcerting to watch.”
Well-Being Issue: “Many employees within Hasbro Interactive, once energized by the division’s promise, wondered if their jobs were secure.”
Describe what you think the problem is and how you think it contributed to the downfall. You can choose any problems that you think are critical, although it is up to you to argue why these are the most important problems or issues.
Step 3: Now take a step back and analyse why and how those issues came about. * Analyse the people who are involved in each issue, in terms of their personality, character and/or and abilities. * Analyse the social context that contributed to the issues such as the team dynamics, cultural issues, power issues. This does not include the competitive environment or other strategic of sociological factors. * Describe how the context and personality influenced how the people involved reacted and behaved. What emotions and information was used by different people that influenced how they behaved (for better or worse).
Step 4: Now that you understand the problems and causes, what would you recommend as possible HR policies and practices that would ensure that these problems and issues don’t re-occur.
As a team you should produce a 10 minute video presentation. This presentation may be a slide show with voice over or something more creative. It is up to you to present a convincing case. The presentation can be shorter but should not exceed 10 minutes 30 seconds.
In addition, you will need to provide a 1 page summary of each person’s contribution to the final presentation. This should be agreed upon and signed by all members of the group.
