...levels of understanding. Jane Eyre, by Charlotte Bronte has stood the test of time due to its impact on society, masterfully utilized motifs, and the continued relevance Bronte’s message has to readers. Emma, by Jane Austen will weather time equally as well as Jane Eyre, as both of the novels display incredible use of language in their distinctly different criticisms of English society in the 19th century. Both Authors employ motifs as a way to express dissatisfaction with society...

...The husband was perceived as the person to obtain all control. Women's roles revolved around the four characteristics of piety, purity, submissiveness, and domesticity. These roles are all extremely demeaning and exhausting ones to have follow through with. However, it created fewer divorce cases between couples compared to modern society. During the Victorian Era, divorce cases were handled by the Church of England; which made it even more difficult due to how poor it was viewed as by most. The literature of the time shows us a few examples of couples trapped in marriages. One of the most famous being Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë....

...Reading Jane Eyre definitely proved to me that it is called a classic for a reason. It had profound techniques in conveying her points of view, which seems very personal. Although it was a long read, it had such quality and expertise, and the mystery of it all had kept me with it all. I try to stay positive before reading my book, but my feelings were a little mixed in the beginning; this novel has a monumental amount of prestige, but it does have some years behind it. I am so glad to have had the opportunity to give it a chance and experience the rhythmic tune this novel had. Jane Eyre made me think about our society as a whole; many of the issues considered in the text are very true now. The world still has class issues, as well as gender inequality and the fact that two centuries have gone by...

...the definition of beauty. Does inner or outer beauty matter more? A female’s inner beauty has not always been appreciated by either sex, so women struggled to define it themselves. In literature, this is a commonly explored theme. In Jane Eyre, the protagonist Jane, abandons her desire for outer beauty and trades it for working on her inner qualities. She then sees herself as beautiful. She placed a higher value on her philosophy and knowledge before her value of outer appearances. The lessons from her childhood focused on outer beauty and were reinforced as she reached her adulthood. In each hardship Jane encountered, her inner beauty outweighed her external appearance. In the end, she was rewarded with a man who loves her for what she offered internally....

...Those amazing women writers I decided to do this topic because so much information I found online connecting to it surprised me so much. I have seen that much of the research papers common opinion was ”Women writers can never write as excellent as men.” Is that true? In my opinion, these thoughts are too narrow and bigoted. The people who have this opinion probably already have their own preconceived notions before they’ve made their judgment. I know there are more men writers than female writers, but you can’t deny that there are a lot of excellent female writers in this world too. Some of them are very famous and the fictions they created are so popular nowadays. They affect countless reader’s minds and how they chosed their next books. For example, Agatha Christie’s << Murder on the Orient Express>> and Charlotte Brontë’s << Jane Eyre>>, are better than most books which are in the same genre. We can never ignore what women writers did to help build the history of world literature and their amazing fictions. They have their own advantages and disadvantages. One big positive quality that female writers have is that they can describe their character’s feelings and minds very well. Most of the time they can express feelings with their pens far better than men. Kegan Gardines believes that these differences in experience will be apparent in the writing. She gives examples of the characteristics of women’s writing that differ from men’s writing: “recurrent...

...INTRODUCTION The present course- paper is devoted to the comprehensive study of stylistic device – the epithet in the literary work “Jane Eyre” by Charlotte Bronte. ...Breaking Into Cars—Stephen I had never broken into a car before. We were in Laredo, having just finished our first day at a Habitat for Humanity work site. The Hotchkiss volunteers had already left, off to enjoy some Texas BBQ, leaving me behind with the college kids to clean up. Not until we were stranded did we realize we were locked out of the van. Someone picked a coat hanger out of the dumpster, handed it to me, and took a few steps back. “Can you do that thing with a coat hanger to unlock it?” “Why me?” I thought. More out of amusement than optimism, I gave it a try. I slid the hanger into the window’s seal like I’d seen on crime shows, and spent a few minutes jiggling the apparatus around the inside of the frame. Suddenly, two things simultaneously clicked. One was the lock on the door. (I actually succeeded in springing it.) The other was the realization that I’d been in this type of situation before. In fact, I’d been born into this type of situation. My upbringing has numbed me to unpredictability and chaos. With a family of seven, my home was loud, messy, and spottily supervised. My siblings arguing, the dog barking, the phone ringing—all meant my house was functioning normally. My Dad, a retired Navy pilot, was away half the time. When he was home, he had a parenting style something like a drill sergeant. At the age of nine, I learned how to clear burning oil from the surface of water. My Dad considered this a critical life skill—you know, in case my aircraft...

I can’t express my gratitude for what they have taught me. Also Mr. Brown, Mrs. Roche, Ms. Edsberg, and Mrs. Hankins have given me so much support in all my activities along with helping me let the world know of my trials for my own growth. I am grateful that I could be brought up to a higher level than I was at when I started at HMA, it has been and will be the most wonderful experience I would face. Tell me about a project you completed at HMA. I have completed a project in which I made a “How-To Video” for my previous English 3P class. I made a video and an information paper about playing the violin properly. It took analyzing my previous experiences playing the violin and how I learned music. I developed a method to teach basics of music theory and violin for certain learning types and described the fundamentals of music. I also researched violin teaching and a few terms for proper presentation. Also, for another final project in English, I made a powerpoint about my life’s journey. I read what was required in the class, analyzed my trials and interviewed my uncle and grandfather to learn wisdom to handle other trials that may come. I also got to look back in my life to fully comprehend myself and how I react and act to certain things. I could relieve the mysteries of myself that I was very confused about....

...A ROOM OF ONES OWN [* This essay is based upon two papers read to the Arts Society at Newnharn and the Odtaa at Girton in October 1928. The papers were too long to be read in full, and have since been altered and expanded.] ONE But, you may say, we asked you to speak about women and fiction--what, has that got to do with a room of one's own? I will try to explain. When you asked me to speak about women and fiction I sat down on the banks of a river and began to wonder what the words meant. They might mean simply a few remarks about Fanny Burney; a few more about Jane Austen; a tribute to the Brontës and a sketch of Haworth Parsonage under snow; some witticisms if possible about Miss Mitford; a respectful allusion to George Eliot; a reference to Mrs Gaskell and one would have done. But at second sight the words seemed not so simple. The title women and fiction might mean, and you may have meant it to mean, women and what they are like, or it might mean women and the fiction that they write; or it might mean women and the fiction that is written about them, or it might mean that somehow all three are inextricably mixed together and you want me to consider them in that light. But when I began to consider the subject in this last way, which seemed the most interesting, I soon saw that it had one fatal drawback. I should never be able to come to a conclusion. I should never be able to fulfil what is, I understand, the first duty of a lecturer to hand you after an hour's discourse a...

...Article A Novel Approach: The Sociology of Literature, Children’s Books, and Social Inequality Amy E. Singer, Ph.D. Assistant Professor of Sociology Knox College, USA © 2011 Singer. This is an Open Access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0), which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited. Abstract This article discusses the complexity of literary analysis and the implications of using fiction as a source of sociological data. This project infuses literary analysis with sociological imagination. Using a random sample of children’s novels published between 1930 and 1980, this article describes both a methodological approach to the analysis of children’s books and the subsequent development of two analytical categories of novels. The first category captures books whose narratives describe and support unequal social arrangements; the second category captures those whose narratives work instead to identify inequality and disrupt it. Building on Griswold’s methodological approach to literary fiction, this project examines how children’s novels describe, challenge, or even subvert systems of inequality. Through a sociological reading of three sampled texts – Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, A Wrinkle in Time, and Hitty: Her First Hundred Years – readers learn how these analytical categories work and how the sociology...
