For good or for bad, the United States government has compromised its citizens’ liberties numerous times in the past few centuries. The higher organization claims that it is for the safety and security of the country, but are these arrangements worth the withdrawal of freedoms? Through the ten amendments, the Bill of Rights grants each U.S. citizen the same privileges. This document is the foundation of the country and should be properly recognized in every aspect. Despite the fact that the government claims its actions are simply for everyone’s security and well being, liberties were compromised and the Bill of Rights not respected when the Japanese-American internment camps were established and the Patriot Act was written. A major important event that has been one of America’s lowest points is the creation of the Japanese-American internment camps. Over two-thirds of the Japanese-Americans living in the country were interned because of domestic, including Roosevelt’s, paranoia after the attack on Pearl Harbor. There were a few court …show more content…
If there is even the slightest sign of suspicious activity noted on the internet or any form of communication, the person’s area will be raided, taking away the fourth amendment. Any suspected terrorist has no access to the fifth or sixth amendments. They are without due process of law and never get a grand jury, witnesses, counsel in their defense or simply a fair trial. Most of them never catch a glimpse of the courtroom, going straight to a cell for interrogation. This leads into the obsolescent of the eighth amendment. The Patriot Act allows torture when it is deemed necessary and the mistreatment of innocent aliens is permitted. For these acts to take place, no reasoning or evidence is needed. Preface This isn’t really a teacher’s manual, not, at least, in the sense of a catechism of questions and correct answers and interpretations. Because the questions provided after each selection in Rereading America are meant to stimulate dialogue and debate — to generate rather than terminate discourse — they rarely lend themselves to a single appropriate response. So, while we’ll try to clarify what we had in mind when framing a few of the knottier questions, we won’t be offering you a list of “right” answers. Instead, regard this manual as your personal support group. Since the publication of the first edition, we’ve had the chance to learn from the experiences of hundreds of instructors nationwide, and we’d like to use this manual as a forum where we can share some of their concerns, suggestions, experiments, and hints. We’ll begin with a roundtable on issues you’ll probably want to address before you meet your class. In the first section of this manual, we’ll discuss approaches to...

I was thirty-five at the time, four years out of law school, recently married, and generally impatient with life. A seat in the Illinois legislature had opened up, and several friends suggested that I run, thinking that my work as a civil rights lawyer, and contacts from my days as a community organizer, would make me a viable candidate. After discussing it with my wife, I entered the race and proceeded to do what every first-time candidate does: I talked to anyone who would listen. I went to block club meetings and church socials, beauty shops and barbershops. If two guys were standing on a corner, I would cross the street to hand them campaign literature. And everywhere I went, I’d get some version of the same two questions. “Where’d you get that funny name?” And then: “You seem like a nice enough guy. Why do you want to go into something dirty and nasty like politics?” I was familiar with the question, a variant on the questions asked of me years earlier, when I’d first arrived in Chicago to work in low-income neighborhoods. It signaled a cynicism...
