A Man and His Rifle- Jarhead Jarhead: Noun, “slang for Marine due to the high-n-tight haircut that resembles a jar. The man fires a rifle for many years, and he goes to war, and afterward he turns the rifle in at the armory and he believes he’s finished with the rifle. But no matter what else he might do with his hands-love a woman, build a house, change his son’s diaper-his hands remember the rifle and the power the rifle proffered” (Swofford 123). That sentence explains the book or at least the main portions of the book. This book Jarhead frightened me yet made me excited; I looked forward to reading the heart pounding adventures and the heinous mischief that Anthony Swofford encountered and digested while in the United States Marine Corps. …show more content…
Our country had fought in three wars in which we were trying to defend other country’s; not really for us but for them. In Jarhead it brings up Vietnam and Korea, and how being in Kuwait and Afghanistan relates to that. To me it makes sense why our soldiers are there; however, I don’t support it, let me make myself clear, I do not support this, but the situation is understandable. It makes sense to me because some of these third world country's, which are country's that do not have much opportunity as us, cannot defend themselves. Our country gets critiqued and criticized an abundant amount due to the way we help other country’s out, but it is because we believe everyone deserves democracy or some sort of it, we believe in freedom, and opportunity. Our country will try to help every other country we can and because of that we are considered by some to be the greatest country. In my eyes we strive for greatest, and that is gratifying to me. We went to defend the Kuwait border and that is where Anthony Swofford is, we went to defend the people of Kuwait and its fields of oil from its neighboring country. It is a tremendous amount of oil. Swofford talks about how the Iraqi military forces set fire to these oil wells, and it is hard to imagine, but what a sight it must've been to see 600+ oil wells on fire. Swofford talks about how it was always dark due to the smoke blocking the sun and how it would …show more content…
I'm wondering how you go from being a civilian to being in the mind of wanting to kill another man. Anthony Swofford didn't kill another man but he wanted to, he talks about how bad he wanted to. He came close he almost shot another man but they decided to bomb the men instead. They stole his kill from him and he was pissed, for a while anyways, but explains later how that “Captain handed me life” (Swofford 257). so he discussing how a part of himself would've died if he did kill those two men. He explains how sometimes he wants to go back to the desert just so he can get a kill, and how he thinks less of himself as a Marine and even as a man kill not killing while in combat. Swofford talks about how it bothers him how it's like a wreck in your head he says. “There is a wreck in your head, part of the aftermath, and you must dismantle the wreck. But after many years you discover that you cannot dismantle the wreck, so you move it around and bury it” (Swofford 247). What changes inside of you that makes you want to kill another human being? What is the desire all about? In conclusion, a man and his rifle are never separated. The book and many others explain why this is. They discuss how bad you want to leave while in the service, and how bad you want to return when you’re home. Men have a sense of feeling guilty for the men still there fighting that war; fighting a war that in their minds is never ending. For example,

Staying on Course

...STAYING ON COURSE Kendra Harvey Pre 100 sect. 7116 October 12, 2013 Kendra Harvey Pre 100 Sect. 7116 12 October 2013 STAYING ON COURSE Enrolling in college at 26 years old was very intimidating to me. Although I graduated from high school, I have a real problem with self confidence. Keeping up with my classmates from high school on social media sites, I became discouraged and depressed from seeing how successful some of them had become. I often wondered why I haven’t become successful. Why was I made to be a failure? Then it dawned on me that I, myself was my own problem. At different points in my life I’ve often given up when I was faced with a challenge. I always took interest in the healthcare field, and I pursued and completed a certification in nursing. When certain circumstances caused for me to have to go back to school to recertify, instead of pressing on I choose defeat. My greatest obstacles now are my children, for I don’t have a strong support system and because of this I have allowed myself to be defeated by other obstacles in life. When I got into college, my biggest challenge was staying focused and motivated. I continued to stay out late, I would put off assignments until the last minute, I did cram study sessions, I was lazy all the time and couldn’t concentrate, and I missed classes and fell behind on home assignments. This caused a major problem for me like receiving failing grades. I blamed everything and...

The 7 Habits

...The Writing Center Book Reviews Like 17 people like this. What this handout is about This handout will help you write a book review, a report or essay that offers a critical perspective on a text. It offers a process and suggests some strategies for writing book reviews. What is a review? A review is a critical evaluation of a text, event, object, or phenomenon. Reviews can consider books, articles, entire genres or fields of literature, architecture, art, fashion, restaurants, policies, exhibitions, performances, and many other forms. This handout will focus on book reviews. Above all, a review makes an argument. The most important element of a review is that it is a commentary, not merely a summary. It allows you to enter into dialogue and discussion with the work’s creator and with other audiences. You can offer agreement or disagreement and identify where you find the work exemplary or deficient in its knowledge, judgments, or organization. You should clearly state your opinion of the work in question, and that statement will probably resemble other types of academic writing, with a thesis statement, supporting body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Typically, reviews are brief. In newspapers and academic journals, they rarely exceed 1000 words, although you may encounter lengthier assignments and extended commentaries. In either case, reviews need to be succinct. While they vary in tone, subject, and style, they share some common features: First...

...be UNDER the desk. Required materials: Charged tablet, charged back-up battery, tablet pen, red pens, pencils, blue or black pens, binder Homework expectations: You will have a variety of different homework assignments. It is imperative that you check RenWeb on a consistent basis, as well as write down the homework from the board every day. Most of the assignments will be completed on your tablet. Many assignments will be graded together in class, and then uploaded to Moodle. Late policy: Daily homework will not be accepted late. If homework is not turned in on the day it is due it will receive a zero. The first zero will result in an email sent to your parents. The second zero will result in a referral to a dean. For projects, book reports, and for the research paper the late policy is a little different than the daily homework policy. The first day that it is late it will get 10% taken off of its overall grade earned. For the second day that it is late it will get 20% taken off of the overall grade earned. On the third day that it is late 30% of the grade will be taken off of its overall grade earned. It will receive a zero if it is not turned in after the third day. Absence policy: You are responsible for completing all work that they have missed. You will have as many days as you have missed to complete the work. Writing a Book Report

...Writing a Book Report Summary: This resource discusses book reports and how to write them. Contributors: Purdue OWL (owl.English.purdue.edu) Book reports are informative reports that discuss a book from an objective stance. They are similar to book reviews but focus more on a summary of the work than an evaluation of it. Book reports commonly describe what happens in a work; their focus is primarily on giving an account of the major plot, characters, thesis, and/or main idea of the work. Most often, book reports range from 250 to 500 words. Before You Read Before you begin to read, consider what types of things you will need to write your book report. First, you will need to get some basic information from the book: • Author • Title • Publisher location, name of publisher, year published • Number of Pages You can either begin your report with some sort of citation, or you can incorporate some of these items into the report itself. Next, try to answer the following questions to get you started thinking about the book: • Author: Who is the author? Have you read any other works by this author? • Genre: What type of book is this: fiction, nonfiction, biography, etc.? What types of people would like to read this kind of book? Do you typically read these kinds of books? Do you like them? • Title: What does the title do for you? Does it spark your interest? Does it fit well with the text of the book? • Pictures/Book Jacket/Cover/Printing:...

Book Review

...Thing(ness) 1. Read this (this thing 1 cm. below) P. J. O’Rourke, the political satirist, reviews in this issue a new book about Starbucks. He told us, in an e-mail exchange, how he brews his own reviews: “I read something I’m reviewing the same way I read other things except more so. That is, I already keep a commonplace book (a file folder, really) for quotations, ideas, information, etc. If I’m going to write a review I mark the work for myself, but besides underlining what interests me I also underline what — as far as I can tell — interested the author. By the time I’m done I have an outline for the review. All I have to do is figure out a smart-aleck lead sentence and a wiseacre ending.”[1] 2. Then read the “How to write a Book Review” article on the very next page. Yes, it is a bit long but the information is really quite good. 3. Over the week go to www.salon.com or to http://www.nytimes.com/pages/books read at least five reviews and then divide them into good and bad reviews. Think about the specific qualities that define the better ones. The article from step two of this process will be helpful at this point. At the end of the day a good book review sees an interesting pattern or spins your understanding of the book in a new and delightful way…and importantly is enjoyable to read (as a writer you need to have fun savaging the book, exploring it, dwelling on it, falling in love with it, etc.). Finally remember that your job is to convince a reader of the...

Body Snatcher Analysis

...Invasion of the Body Snatchers: An Analysis of All Four Versions The story begins with Miles Bennell, thought to be insane, being held in a local hospital and telling another doctor an incredible story. In the perfectly normal town of Santa Mira, California, residents seem to be suffering from mass hysteria: certain people feel that their relatives are not actually their relatives, even though by all objective counts they are. Things become more suspicious when Miles' friend, Jack Belicec, finds an unformed, unmoving body in his house that later disappears. Jack and his wife decide to stay at Miles' house, with Miles' former girlfriend Becky who is showing a renewed interest in him. At night in Miles' greenhouse, the four find giant pod seeds that begin to sprout duplicates of all of them. Jack and his wife leave to find help, but they return transformed into emotionless replicas of their former selves. Most of the town has already been converted, and Miles and Becky are chased by a mob ofpod people. In 1956, the original Invasion of the Body Snatchers, along with several science fiction films of that era, intentionally chose to mirror society in a way that was quite direct. McCarthyism had turned people against one another, and soon Americans began to think they were being invaded by Communists. They began to look at their neighbors with increasing fear andsuspicion, which created an air of paranoia that felt like smog permeating humanity. Invasion of the Body Snatchers, starring...
