The book “Invisible” by Cecily Paterson is about a high school girl named Jasmine Crawford and her life. She goes through a lot of drama, hard decision making, and breakdowns. Her choices affect’s everything around her and her being deaf make it harder for her to fit in. In her life she experiences things that make her struggle in school and when she’s home. It’s hard for her to open up to people and that’s her main problem.
In the first chapter, Jasmine starts off by saying “I have a way of becoming invisible. I sit in my hammock chair in my room at home and take out my hearing aid, start a gentle rock and slowly close my eyes. I begin to melt until I am no one. I don’t exist. It was three girls and their names were Shalini, Tyra, and Rae. They started hanging out with Jasmine more and more every day and Jasmine finally felt like she had friends. Shalini would always ask Jasmine for favors because she loved to order people around. As the days went on Shalini made Jasmine and her two other friends go watch her audition for the lead role in a play. When Shalini found out she didn’t get the role she was furious. She wanted to get revenge on Miss Fraser (Drama Teacher) and she wanted to do it at lunch time with Jasmine, Rae, and Tyra. Jasmine didn’t know what was happening but she went along with it anyways. Shalini, Rea, and Tyra was destroying everything in the drama room and Jasmine was shocked at what was going on. She tried to save a painting that was very important and hid it somewhere they wouldn’t find it. Then the next day they were all called to the principal’s office. All of the girls got called first and then they finally called Jasmine in. When she got in the office the principal, Miss Fraser, and her mom were there. They wanted to know what really happened and Jasmine explained what happened. She was given a second chance only if he helps Miss Fraser with the school play. He’s one of the main characters in the play. Liam started talking to Jasmine when she got there and they became friends and then later they started dating. When they went back to school Liam saw Jasmine at lunch and told her that she should hang out with him and his friends. Also, Jasmine liked her new friends so much that she thought they wouldn’t like her anymore if they found out what she did. Jasmine felt like it was in her best interest to keep it to herself and not let anyone find out about it. Later on, that day when Jasmine got home she started to write in her journal. She wrote to her father every day telling him what happens to her every day and how’s she feeling. Jasmine loves her father so much and when he passed she was broken inside. She kept all her feelings to herself and hold back her tears. That day she decided that not feeling anything at all would be the best thing to do because she didn’t want to get hurt again. That’s the reason why she wrote to her dad and writing down her feelings helped a lot. Jasmine starting writing every day and enjoyed it. She looked forward to going to school more and going to help Miss Fraser with the play after school. Going to the play rehearsal’s made Jasmine realized how much she liked acting
