In the following, I am going to compare Jeannette Walls’ childhood with Lily’s childhood, and show how it has shaped their characters.

First of all, I would like to point out that there are some differences in the childhood of both of them.
Jeannette Walls’ dad is different than Lily’s dad. He is not able to have a regular well-paid job and he behaves inappropriately. Furthermore, he is dishonest and abusive. Lily on the other hand has a special relationship with her dad. Since Mr.Casey is a hard-working parent and takes responsibility for his actions, he has a better influence on his daughter Lily.

It seems like Lily and Jeannette already always have their sense of identity and just want to live up to their own expectations. They achieve that aim by often moving away and hence becoming independent.
With their self-sufficiency, self-reliance and trustworthy manner, Lily and Jeannette kind of represent the American Frontier Spirit. Consequently you could also call their life to be an allegory of the Frontier Spirit.
Lastly, an important side of their character is the, especially mental, resilience. The two women show tremendous willpower in changing their future and in wanting to show as much commitment as possible.
