Conservatism began to rise towards the last part of the 20th century for a few different reasons. Jerry Falwell who organized the Moral Majority influenced part of the conservatism by promoting Christian views along side republican political views. “The Moral Majority sought to fuse personal beliefs with political action”(Barnes & Bowles, 2015). The Moral Majority “claimed more than 4 million members and was extremely important in electing (and reelecting) Ronald Reagan as president”(Barnes & Bowles, 2015). Jerry Falwell did not support gay rights nor did he support women’s right to abort. He was an extremely influential politician and by promoting his views he negatively affected the gay and women community.
