...no. 1-0023 Starbucks Coffee Company* On an overcast February afternoon in 2000, Starbucks CEO Orin Smith gazed out of his office window in Seattle and contemplated what had just occurred at his company’s annual shareholder meeting. In prior years, the meeting had always been a fun, all-day affair where shareholders from around the country gathered to celebrate the company’s success. This year, however, Smith and other senior Starbucks executives heard an earful from the activist group Global Exchange. A human rights organization dedicated to promoting environmental, political, and social justice around the world, Global Exchange criticized Starbucks for profiting at the farmer’s expense by paying low prices and not buying “fair trade” beans. Not only did the activists disrupt the company’s annual meeting to the point that the convention hall security police asked the activists to leave, but they also threatened a national boycott if the company refused to sell and promote fair trade coffee. Although Smith strongly disagreed with using the shareholders meeting as a public forum, he knew there was a strong likelihood his company could face serious reprisals if it did not address the issues raised by Global Exchange. The Windy City migrants included an ex-slave’s son Big Bill Broonzy, who worked on the railroad in Arkansas and operated as a cultivator hand in Mississippi. In 1920 he reached Chicago. In 1925, Tampa Red, a guitarist from Florida, moved to Chicago where three years later he recorded “Tight Like That”. Eurreal Wilford Montgomery, a pianist (“Little Brother”), born on the lands of a Louisiana lumber corporation in 1906, made his first recordings in 1928 in Chicago. Some years later, Roosevelt Sykes who was a barrelhouse pianist, “The Honey dripper,” did the same thing. In 1934, John Lee Williamson who was a harmonica wizard (“Sonny Boy”), travelled from Jackson in Tennessee to the Windy City where he cut his “Good Morning Little School Girl” three years after. George Leaner, who started retailing discs of blues in Chicago throughout the 1930s, elicited, “The Central Railroad of Illinois carried the blues towards Chicago. Having thousands of workers who arose to work in the plants of meat-packing and the mills of steel originated the [blues artists].” These immigrants played diverse blues styles. In the framework of a monopolistic insurance market with private information, it is shown that government entry to the market as a competitor which sells insurance, results in all potential buyers actually purchasing insurance. Chapter II: The welfare trade off between reduction in risk and enhanced market power, as depository institutions become larger but fewer, is studied. The main result is that when there are enough independent risks in the economy, it is possible to achieve high diversification through mergers between depository institutions at a very small cost in terms of greater market power. Chapter III: Firms wishing to issue securities on the stock market are required to disclose private information which might be beneficial to competitors. Issuing securities publicly is more costly than doing so privately. In equilibrium, firms with sensitive information issue securities privately, while competitors cannot unambiguously infer that the information withheld is very sensitive.
