JERSEY CITY COMMUNITY ASSESSMENT

In many ways, the history of Jersey City is the history of America. From the earliest Dutch settlement in 1660 to the present day, Jersey City has seen its share of exploration, innovation, slavery, reform, immigration, industry, commerce, terrorism, war and peace and survived. Jersey City's population reached 299,000 in 1950. Residents and businesses, lured to suburbs accessible by new highways, began to leave the city in the 1950s. In response, older brownstone row homes were rehabilitated and massive downtown redevelopment projects were sponsored by private, municipal, state, and federal government dollars. Liberty State Park opened in 1976, and the first New Jersey Waterfront Marathon was run in 1985. By the late 1980s, Jersey City had become an alternate site for businesses fleeing high rent and other business costs in New York City. Jersey City was the only one of the state's six largest cities to gain both in population and employment during the recession of the late 1980s and early 1990s. In 1994, ten major firms relocated to the city, bringing more than 6,000 new jobs. Nearly 30 firms moved to or began operations within the city during the 1990s, and the skyline was transformed from rail yards and warehouses along the Hudson River to modern office towers and trendy artist's neighborhoods. Massive ongoing development projects into the new millennium promise continuing prosperity for Jersey City. (www.city-data.com).
According to USA.com,
“Jersey City is located in northern New Jersey, it’s part of Hudson County and has 14.79 square miles of land area and 6.29 square miles of water area. As of 2010, the total Jersey City population was 247, 597, which has grown 3.14% since 2000. The population growth rate is lower that the state average rate of 4.49% and is much lower that the state average rate of 4.49% and is much lower than the national average rate of 9.71%. The Jersey City population density is 11, 745.78 people per square mile, which is much higher that the state average density of 1,007.95 people per square mile and is much higher than the national average density of 81.32 people per square mile. (Jersey City, NJ, 2013).
Jersey City has different kinds of housing types. There are some old abandoned buildings with outside finishes that are made of brick and some that have wood finishing. Some of the new upcoming buildings also have brick and wood finishing. Most of the houses in Jersey City are crowded together in the fact that in some places there is no existing space between houses or space to separate two houses. This has caused overcrowding of houses as well as people in some of the areas. The downtown area of Jersey City mostly consists of high-rise buildings both residential and commercial, and most of the buildings were recently constructed.
Transportation in the Jersey City area isn’t much of a problem according to the assessments and windshield survey done. There is public transportation that includes buses, path trains, and ferries that take passengers across the Hudson River to New York. There are taxis, as well private transportation for those that own cars. “One of Jersey City’s strengths is its access to a wide variety of transportation options. Whether you’re walking, biking, driving, taking the bus or train, or relaxing on the ferry, if you start in Jersey City, you can get there from here. (Transportation, 2007)
From Jersey City you can access the Holland tunnel, Lincoln tunnel, the New Jersey turnpike and Route 1-9, this is very convenient for the Jersey City residents that drive because getting to a major highway is not a hustle. “With ready access to the NJ Turnpike, Route 1-9 and both Holland and Lincoln Tunnel, getting in and out of Jersey City can be quick and easy. (Transportation, 2007).
PATH subway trains will take you from four locations throughout Jersey City to midtown and lower Manhattan. These streamlined trains provide an important link between Jersey City’s neighborhoods and surrounding NYC metro area. Easy connections can be made from the PATH subway to the NYC MTA subway. The PATH trains run -24hrs a day, 7 days a week, with weekend schedules on the JSQ-33rd Street line. NJ Transit buses stop at locations throughout Jersey City and the surrounding region, including major transportation hubs like Newark’s Penn Station, Hoboken, Secaucus and New York’s Port Authority Bus Terminal. Ferry-NY Waterway maintains cross-Hudson service between Jersey City and Manhattan, a total of four routes set against the backdrop of the NYC skyline (Railway & Subway, Bus, and Ferry).
Having lived in Jersey City for over eight years now, I can attest that some of the places in the Jersey City area not safe to live in. However the downtown Jersey City area is considered safe to live, but not everyone can afford to live there. “The crime rate in Jersey city is considerably higher than the national average across all communities in America from the largest to the smallest, although at 30 crimes per one thousand residents, it is not among the communities with the very highest crime rate. The chance of becoming a victim of either violent or property crime in Jersey City is 1 in 33. Based on FBI crime data, Jersey City is not one of the safest communities in America. Relative to New Jersey, Jersey City has a crime rate that is higher than 78% of the state’s cities and towns of all sizes” (Crime rates for Jersey City, NJ, 2013).
There are several fire department areas in the town of Jersey that serve the community in case of any emergencies. “Presently, the Jersey City Fire Department is comprised of 550 uniformed members and 50 civilian employees. Fire companies respond from 17 fire stations located throughout the City. Last year, the Fire Department responded to over 18,000 fire alarms, emergencies, and requests for medical assistance. All members of the Jersey City Fire Department receive first responder training and all Fire department vehicles are equipped with automatic defibrillators.” (Department of Fire and Emergency Services, 2007).
Jersey CityPolice Department (JCPD) provides police protection to the community. They respond to all emergencies that occur in the community. “The Jersey City Police Department consists of some 900 uniformed officers/superiors, 200 crossing guards, and 187 civilians dedicated to the safety of Jersey City’s residents and visitors. The responsibilities of the JCPD include: Conservation of public harmony and order, deterrence, detection and solving of crimes, enforcement of state laws and city ordinances, provide non-law enforcement services to the public, protection of the Constitutional guarantees of all persons, facilitate safe movement of people and vehicular traffic and render other emergency services as needed.”(Department of Police, 2007)
When it comes to recreation, Jersey City has a lot to offer to members of its community. There are parks that families can take their children to play and enjoy a nice afternoon or day. The City allows grilling in the parks, whereby in the summer families gather in the parks to grill and enjoy the nice weather. The Hudson River runs across the downtown area of Jersey City, which is also where the Liberty state park is located. Tourists and community members enjoy going to this particular park because of the view of New York from this location. One is also able to see lady Liberty and enjoy a stroll around the park. According to the Department of Recreation,
It is the primary aim of the Department of Recreation to oversee the provision of activities that are rich in leisure, culture and physical fitness to the residents of Jersey City. The Department ensures the utilization of the City’s recreational facilities both indoor and outdoor, encouraging people of all ages to partake in activities that rejuvenate the body as well as the mind. Specifically, the Department offers a wide array of activities that encompass but are not limited to ice skating, aerobics, swimming, and gymnastics as well as more conventional activities such as track, basketball, baseball and football. The Department offers after school programs at the Jersey City YMCA and Armory and various public schools throughout the city. (2007). As a community, Jersey City is a diverse community that consists of Africans, Hispanics, Arabs, Indians, Asians, Filipinos, and many more. “Boasting one of the most diverse populations in the United States, Jersey City is host to an array of ethnicities and cultures. Living up to its legacy as a Tapestry of Nations, the city is composed of substantial communities of Jewish, Italian, Cuban, Filipino, Polish, Indian, Irish, Puerto Rican, Dominican, African, Arab and Asian descent. With the historic Ellis Island within its borders, it is not surprising that Jersey City has become renowned for her diversity.” (About Jersey City, 2007) According to USA.com based on the 2010 data, “White-32.67%, Black-25.85%, Hispanic 27.57%, Asian 23.67%, Native (American, Indian, Alaska Native, Hawaiian Native, etc.)-0.58%, one race, other-12.81%, Two or more races-4.42%, Mexican-6.64%, Puerto Rican-37.62%, Cuban-2.40%, Central American-10.02%, South American-16.17%, Indian 46.27%, Chinese-9.60%, Japanese-0.82%, Korean-3.94%, Vietnamese-2.74%, Asian, other-7.93%.”(Jersey City, NJ Population and Races, 2013).

Trenton Gang Violence on the Decline, Myth or Fact

...Trenton Gang Violence on the Decline Myth or Fact In conducting my research on gangs in Trenton, New Jersey and whether or not their presence and the perception that violence is on the decline; either myth or fact appeared contradicted at best, similar to how our researchers in the context of our reading toggled with the definition of gangs. The scope and methodology of my research consisted of the following approach: Interviews: I spoke with a detective and long time friend B. Mathis on the phone of the Trenton police department on approximately December 17, 2009 regarding his take on how his law enforcement teams were dealing with combating the war on gangs in Trenton. I spoke with Z. Chester, Trenton Central High School classmate on December 17, 2009 who is now running for City Council from whom I wanted to obtain a political view point on the gang progress or decline in Trenton. I conducted a similar interview with a distant friend T. Mack, who is now running for Mayor in Trenton on the same political views on gang violence and potential decline within the city. I had arranged, but was unable to speak with a former security guard of Trenton Central High and Junior High School #1 by the name of B. White about his perception of gang activity in comparison from middle school to high school and some of his experiences as he attempted to uphold discipline in the capacity of his role as a security guard. Lastly, I gathered some small, but factual information from...

Abbott V Burke

...have a right to an equal education regardless of where they are from and how much money they have. There have been a few times that this case has been re opened and wouldn’t surprise me if you hear about it being revisited again. With the recent budget cuts and everything going on in this country it will be only a matter of time before it gets revisited. Abbott v. Burke is a complex case that takes place throughout over two decades. The decisions of the New Jersey Supreme court have led to better and more progressive educational policies and funds in to poor school districts. Initially the case centered on whether or not the poor school districts should be compared to wealthier districts when it comes to considering educational funding, however now it centers on various ways of improving the school systems in the poorer communities. In 1981 on the 5th day of February the education law center, the attorneys for the state of New Jersey’s public school children in the four most needy or poor cities in the state of New Jersey, filed a complaint against several state officials. The complaint was that they were demanding that a thorough and efficient education should be given to those children in these areas as well. Abbott is a model for conducting successful state reform litigation. He conducted interviews with various people in the case as well as the school administrators. It is noted that it is necessary for cases like this that it should be at the highest level of the judiciary...

Drug Traffic

...opportunity to get out of this drug dealing lifestyle and get his life on the right track. Fortunately, I was able to get out of this lifestyle and get my life on track but not many make it out alive. Drug trafficking is a global/national issue, but when it is effecting the ones you love, It becomes a personal issue. While some feel drug decriminalization does not lead to an increase of drug use, Most Americans do not favor it (Hartnett,E.July,2012 Drug Legalization: Why It Wouldn't Work in the United States). Drug trafficking is a "dead end street" that has entrap a lot of promising young men and women in New jersey. The effects of drug trafficking can be life-changing for the worst for young adults who chose this lifestyle. These were core reasons for why I decided to go with this topic. The purpose of this paper is to show the compounding effects of drug trafficking in New Jersey. Drug Trafficking Drug trafficking or illegal drug trading is a criminal offense that occurs when a person transports, manufactures, and sells unlawful controlled substances such as: marijuana, cocaine, heroin, LSD, Ecstasy, or methamphetamines. Research showed that drug trafficking is a significant problem facing the United States and Mexico and is considered to be an issue of Homeland Border Security. Drug trafficking operations tend to run a large scale basis, either domestically or internationally. In most cases, drug trafficking is categorized as a federal offense, due...

Impact of Organizational Environment

...the just recent disaster of Hurricane Sandy that devastated north east portion of the United States, specifically New York and New Jersey; has called for the services of emergency response units for response. Even to this day, thousands of people are without electricity and heat in their homes; others are homeless because their homes were destroyed by the wind, fire, and the Atlantic Ocean. Mitigation and having a Contingency Plan is important to help prevent high numbers of loss of life. When Hurricane Sandy came through, flooding and powerful waves slammed into homes and businesses, flooding areas of communities; which prevented fire departments from extinguishing fires that broke out. Local and national news were able to warn people ahead of time of the hurricane that was approaching; in which has probably saved thousands of lives. However, one of the four phases of Emergency Management has yet to be implemented effectively; Recovery. With so many homes and business obliterated, thousands of people displaced and homeless; they are looking for help, support, and answers from the federal government. Utility companies are feverishly working to reinstate electricity to the homes and businesses that were not destroyed; but recovery is going to be a long process and funding will have to be required in order to support the communities. Communities and State/local governments have increased their expectations for support and recovery efforts from the federal government; such...

Gangs

...lords and they had control of the city. In the later 20th century gangs began to change and focus more on drugs and violence. Gangs were focused more on the media and controversies between different coasts in America. They were fueled by hatred and explicit music. Also adolescents in gangs started to increase sufficiently over time. With the growing presence of criminal street gang members in the United States, communities everywhere are experiencing the damaging impact of their criminal behavior. A 2011 report by the National Gang Intelligence Center reported the number of gang members in the United States was conservatively estimated at 1.4 million. As these gang members evolve, are they using our nation’s colleges and universities to educate themselves? How will that affect our communities? A survey conducted by college students and campus police showed that less than one in four students agreed there was a gang problem in the community around their campus, while two of three of the police respondents agreed with the statement. Students and police agreed in similar percentages that there was a gang problem within the campus community. At least half of both students and police thought gang members were responsible for less than 10% of crime on campus. About two of three students and police reported less than 10% of the students were active gang members. The Bloods, Crips, and Gangster Disciples were the top three gangs in the campus community for both groups. Drugs crimes, assaults...

...eye, and crisis is that turning point in which if you’re not prepared can be detrimental. It is only through careful planning, practice and implementation of a plan for an individual and an emergency response plan for an organization can one hope to be ready. In the article CEO Gerald Smarten is faced with a subway bombing disaster that was unforeseen. He must make a huge decision for his corporation Kaspa Financial Services on whether or not to allow the companies front lobby to be turned into a triage center and the cafeteria a possible morgue. He has never had to deal with the magnitude of this situation and it was reported in the article that he had just attended training the prior month to discuss emergency response plans within the city of Boston. Coming from his financial background he knew about “market disasters” but is he really professionally able to make such a decision that will affect the outcome of so many people and their lives? Smarten and Kaspa financial did have an emergency financial response plan ready for implementation (McNulty, 2010, p. 2). The CEO knew the first order of business was to not panic and remain calm. He then had the calls and business for the financial institution transferred to their sister firms in other locations and regions to handle the day to day business. By implementing this plan it allowed for Kaspa to continue to try and maintain its commitment, obligations and responsibilities to the shareholders. Important documents and records...
