Salem Witch Trials

...From there, the project research was moved to the colony of Connecticut. The resources detailing witchcraft in Connecticut also revealed a variety of approaches to narrating historical events. Take the work by John Demos titled Entertaining Satan: Witchcraft and the Culture of Early New England. In this article, Demos detailed witchcraft in Connecticut through the veil of Gender Studies as a social movement primarily targeted at women living on the fringes of colonial society. According to Demos, this phenomenon explained why women were victims at a ratio of four to one verses their male counterparts. This methodology is markedly different than the narrative approach utilized by Cynthia Wolfe Boynton. Using an approach based on corroborating evidence from firsthand accounts, arrest records, and government documents preserved in the Connecticut state archives, Boynton attempted to relay each instance of witchcraft in the colony with as much detail as historical evidence could allow. This allowed her to piece together the story of the first recorded instance of a condemned witch being hanged in the British colonies: Alyse Youngs of Windsor Connecticut was publicly executed for witchcraft in 1647. After exploring the tragic end of Youngs and other cases depicted by Boynton, this research project moved southwards from...

Gay Rights and Religion

...Kelly Krause Research paper PO 102-02 Gay rights and Religion I choose to do my paper on gay rights and religion. I will be talking about Amendment 14. States that support gay marriage. Religious rights versus gay rights. Gay rights and religious freedom. Gay discrimination. Gay rights and the Constitution. In February of 2004 San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom ordered the city clerk to issue marriage licenses to gay and lesbian couples. The issue that had simmered in the background for years was moved toward the front of the nation's political agenda. Supporters of the more traditional conceptions of marriage fought Newsom in the courts. When they failed there they were placed on California's 2008 ballot that would restrict marriage to heterosexual couples only. Before the 2008 election Massachusetts and Connecticut had already legalized same-sex marriage. Soon after California's vote, Vermont and Iowa joined the ranks states that allow gay couples to marry. While many supporters of gay marriage have focused on winning state approval through the political process by passing new laws to legalize the practice. That strategy has succeeded but only in New England. In the other states, gay marriage has been established only through the courts. While most of the legal fighting over gay marriage has unfolded in the various state courts, many gay-rights advocates suggest that soon the battle needs to be taken to the next level and fought out in the federal courts. Ac Milan

...AC MILAN Fall 2014 Part 1: The Company Back on December 16, 1899 Milan Foot-Ball and Cricket Club was officially formed, but the first time Milan's name appeared publicly was on Monday, December 18 in an article by the Gazzetta dello Sport newspaper. Founded by English lace-maker expatriate Herbert Kilpin and businessman Alfred Edwards, the AC Milan become quickly one the most prestigious football teams in Italy and Europe. Thus, the fact it was founded by English men made the club named Milan, the city name pronounced in English, instead of pronouncing it Milano, as for the all-time rival FC Internazionale Milano. The Associazione Calcio Milan has spent almost its entire history in the top flight of the Italian Football Championship, the Serie A. To date, AC Milan is the second most titled club in the world with 7 champions’ league titles, among other international trophies, right behind the Real Madrid and its 10 champions’ league titles (taking into consideration that Real Madrid won half of its champions’ league titles in the 60’s.) However, under the last 28 years of Italian Billionaire and Italy’s former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi’s chiarmanship, the Associazione Calcio Milan have won more titles than any other team worldwide. Thus, Silvio Berlusconi is considered as the most successful football club president of all times, even if there is a debate about it since Real Madrid fans consider Santiago Bernabeu as the owner of this title because of his 60’s...

Together they are synonymous with innovation and legal battles against established rivals. James Dyson was born in Norfolk in 1947. He studied furniture design and interior design at the Royal College of Art from 1966 to 1970 and his first product, the Sea Truck, was launched while he was still Courtesy of Dyson. studying. Dyson’s foray into developing vacuum cleaner technology happened by chance. In 1978, while renovating his 300-year-old country house, Dyson became frustrated with the poor performance of his conventional vacuum cleaner. Whenever he went to use it, there was poor suction. One day he thought he would find out what was wrong with the design. He noted that the appliance worked by drawing air through the bag to create suction, but when even a fine layer of dust got inside, it clogged its pores, stopping the airflow and suction. In his usual style of seeking solutions from unexpected sources, Dyson noticed how a nearby sawmill used a cyclone – a 30-foot-high cone that spun dust out of the air by centrifugal force – to expel waste. He reasoned that a vacuum cleaner that could separate dust by cyclonic action and spin it out of the ...

...The Marketplace of Perceptions Like all revolutions in thought, this one began with anomalies, strange facts, odd observations that the prevailing wisdom could not explain. Casino gamblers, for instance, are willing to keep betting even while expecting to lose. People say they want to save for retirement, eat better, start exercising, quit smoking—and they mean it—but they do no such things. Victims who feel they’ve been treated poorly exact their revenge, though doing so hurts their own interests. Such perverse facts are a direct a≠ront to the standard model of the human actor— Economic Man—that classical and neoclassical economics have used as a foundation for decades, if not centuries. Economic Man makes logical, rational, self-interested decisions that weigh costs against benefits and maximize value and profit to himself. Economic Man is an intelligent, analytic, selfish creature who has perfect self-regulation in pursuit of his future goals and is unswayed by bodily states and feelings. And Economic Man is a marvelously convenient pawn for building academic theories. But Economic Man has one fatal flaw: he does not exist. Prohibition of Riba from the Perspective of 4 Main Schools of Thought

...buyu’). The prohibition of riba appears in Al-Quran in four different revelations. The first of these is in Surah Ar-Rum ayyat 39 which emphasized on moral denunciation for those who gives riba and commendation for those who contribute tithe (zakat). The second revelation is in Surah An-Nisa ayyat 161 concerning riba and the Jews. It severely condemned the Jews who took riba despite they were forbidden to do so. The third revelation in Surah Ali Imran ayyat 130 enjoined the Muslims to keep away themselves from riba and the fourth revelation in Surah Al-Baqarah ayyat 275-278 delineate the strong verdict against riba especially the two excerpts from ayyat 275 which stated that “Those who devour riba will not stand except as one whom the devil has driven madness by [his] touch” and “… Allah has permitted trade and forbidden riba”. Allah SWT strongly condemned riba and that was reflected in Surah Al-Baqarah ayyat 278-279 which imposes harsh punishment for those who hesitate to observe the verdict. Prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h.) during his last pilgrimage pronounced the following: “Be aware that every single type...

...CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION 1.1 Research Background The auditor’s roles are to provide an opinion on financial statement and to ensure that the statements are based on true and fair image of company performance to the stakeholders. They are authorized in checking the accuracy of business records. Opinions given by the auditor gives an added credibility to the financial statements (Maqableh, 2014). Commonly, investors often rely on financial statements provided by auditor in making investment judgement and increase the productivity of financial markets. Financial statements provided by the auditors are often reviewed as credible, unbiased opinion that truly reflects the company financial positions. There’s no doubt that auditor independence is the core of auditing profession when establishing its objectivity and integrity. Auditor independence, in particular, indicates the ability of an auditor to disregard any influence or control when conducting an opinion (AAA, 1973). Therefore, auditor must be, and must be seen to be independent of company management. Lack of independence causes audits to be considered to have little value (Johnstone, Sutton, & Warfield, 2001). This is further supported by Elliott and Jacobson (1998) that a particular interest may trigger a risk that could weaken the outcome of the audit which in turn impairs the auditor independence. Hence, independence is fundamental to the purpose served by auditors (Moore et al., 2002). This study is limited to...

...Analyst information intermediation – private and public information –and the central role of knowledge and social forces in economic processes in the ‘market for information’. John Holland, University of Glasgow, Jo Danbolt, University of Edinburgh, Lei Chen, University of Keele. John Holland, University of Glasgow, The Adam Smith Business School, University of Glasgow, Main Building, Glasgow, G12 8QQ, Scotland Abstract: This paper develops a model of the information intermediation role of analysts in the ‘market for information’ (MFI). It illustrates how the same type of ‘soft’ intangibles information changes as it progresses through analyst information intermediation processes. The latter concern: company disclosure; analyst acquisition and analysis of company information; analyst reporting processes; and market impacts. The common information concerns ‘soft’ or qualitative information about the company intellectual capital (IC) or intangibles in the company business model. Banks and bank analysts are used as examples. Knowledge, social and economic factors in the wider ‘market for information’ (MFI) are shown to be major influences on ‘soft information’ and how it changes in analyst information intermediation processes. Negative knowledge and social factors play a role in weakening and eventually destabilising economic processes in analyst and the MFI. They were important factors in creating knowledge and information problems in analysts and the MFI, both ongoing...
