Whell the book starts out in the night, when Blizzard (her dog) comes and wakes up Jessie. She followed Blizzard outside in the cold of winter. Blizzard took her to the clift were three men were shipwrecked at the bottom. Jessie went and got her father and brother (Erik) and told them about the people at the bottom of the clift. It took them awhile, before her father got them out. He got them out by, climbing down the cliff, while Erik was at the top holding the rope that was tied to the man that was being lifted up. The old man was in bad shape but it took a lot of sleep, but the man is good. He is the grandfather (Mr.Blair) of the young boy (Ned) that is as old as Erik, Neds father's name is Donald Anderson. Erik and his sister do not get along very well. Ned, Mr.Anderson,Jessie and her dad went on a ship to Gull Harbor, to sent a telegram to is wife.
