...Analysis DeAnna Alexander SOC/315 October 9, 2012 Shyamal Das Multicultural Analysis A multicultural society is a society that consists of several different ethnic groups to make it one. Some ethnics groups may share the same values and beliefs as other and then there are some that have completely different traits, beliefs, and values. In order to determine the differences or similarities in customs and beliefs, one must do an extensive amount of reading and research. The United States of America is one of many multicultural societies of which six of them will be discussed. Since the early 1800’s, there has discrimination and stereotyping in the U.S. Centering on the history and beliefs of different ethnic group’s stereotyping, prejudice acts, and how one individual treats someone of a different culture shows how it all can harm more than just an individual, but society as a whole. Different Stereotypes Religion and ethnicity has been a substantial way that U.S society has used when trying to make out someone of a different race’s identity, as well as the task they are capable of performing (Schaefer, para. 1, 3, 6, 2011). It is easy for someone to look at a person and identify them with the wrong ethnic group based on their appearances, for example, a German woman may have pale skin with blonde hair but the person looking at her wouldn’t know that she is German, or of a different ethnic group until she opens her mouth to speak and they hear her accent. This can also...

...Stereotypes are not only harmful in their own right; they do damage by fostering prejudice and discrimination. After all, if encyclopedia readers are led to believe that Black people have intellectual limitations, why spend time and money educating Black children? As used here, "discrimination" involves putting group members at a disadvantage or treating them unfairly as a result of their group membership. More specifically, "personal discrimination" refers to acts of discrimination committed by individuals (e.g., a manager who refuses to hire Jewish employees), whereas "institutional discrimination" refers to discriminatory policies or practices carried out by organizations and other institutions (e.g., an anti-Semitic immigration policy). Prejudice, stereotyping, and discrimination often go hand-in-hand, but it is also possible to have one without the others. When an ethnic group is stereotyped with a neutral or positive attribute such as "family-oriented," prejudice and discrimination may not be involved. Similarly, a generalized prejudice against "foreigners" or "amputees" may not include specific stereotypes or acts of discrimination. There are even times when discrimination takes place without prejudice or stereotyping, either intentionally or unintentionally. For an illustration of how this can occur, consider the following hypothetical problem: Suppose your school or organization is accused of sex discrimination because the overall percentage of female job candidates...

...into the differences between prejudice and discrimination I have found that people in society have blurred the lines between the two words. We often see one being misused for the other even though they have completely different meanings, actions, and thoughts. In the purest form of the word, prejudice is feeling differently towards a certain group or groups that have a trait that they do not like or agree with. Everyone can be and is prejudice at some point in their life. Discrimination is where a person has prejudice towards a person or group of people and takes action. In today's society we tend to want to group the two together and make them seem like they are the ultimate evil, but in reality one is a common place occurrence that is usually kept behind closed doors while the other is not a good thing and can lead some to horrible actions. When I researched the two words I immediately noticed the way that they can be grouped together. I noticed that it is one trait as humans that we can't escape as hard as we try. It does not matter what race, gender, sexual orientation, or social class that you belong to there will always be one thing that makes us feel prejudice. Prejudice stems from the way that we as humans stereotype each other. Prejudice is usually completely unjustified and has no roots in reality. It is a positive or negative attitude towards people or groups for the way that they interact socially. I realized that in some cases prejudice can lead to the person feeling...

...Discrimination Worksheet Write a 100- to 200-word response to each of the following questions. Provide citations for all the sources you use. What is discrimination? How is discrimination different from prejudice and stereotyping? Discrimnation according to google search. It means, " the unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people or things. when it comes to certain groups. example; race, age, sex." For me prejudice to me is like looking at a persons judgmental negative point of view on a group of people. Stereotyping is what you do when you meet someone for the first time, its like the saying the first impression on someone is the lasting impression. Stereotyping can also be a negative thing as well depending on a certain thing or situation. When I see discrimination I try not to say anything because you never know what a person can do, you don't know if that person is going to flip out on you or not. Also with discrimination it is like taking away the right away from someone. What are the causes of discrimination? To me with discrimination you can view it in different ways, but from what I learned its the human behavior that a person has towards another person, It could be because they are white or black, arab or jewish or indian. It can also be because that of a person race, religion, sex, age, what they wear, what disability that they have, how they look or what. But the reasonable answer on why discrimination is cause is because...

...There is no denying it; we all are prejudice, some more than others. Just imagine yourself walking through an airport terminal. There is a Middle-Eastern man sitting, waiting to get on the same plane that you happen to be boarding. Due to recent events over the past decade, many Americans have a feeling that this man is a terrorist and is going to blow up the plane. Although this is not the truth, this is how most people think. People obtain these prejudices from family, friends and events. When you are growing up your personality, beliefs and lifestyles are formed. Prejudice does not just come out through skin color, but about other qualities such as physical and mental disabilities. Throughout this course we have discussed many different types of prejudices. We learned about Mike Rose, Majora Carter, the Fugees, Jo Goodwin Parker, Lars Eighner, Jane Elliot and others. Each story told another form a prejudice, each equally wrong and powerful. The most common form of prejudice is racism. See this form displayed in Majora Carter’s “Greening the Ghetto”, the Fugees story and Jane Elliot’s “A Class Divided”. Majora Carter is a young educated African American woman who grew up in the ghettos in the South Bronx. During the time of her childhood many of the buildings in her neighborhood were abandoned; landlords were burning their buildings to collect the insurance; light manufacturing industries were moving out and waste facilities were moving in to take their place. Ghettos are...

...What is a stereotype? Stereotypes that I am aware of are cultural, groups of individuals, sexual stereotypes, and men vs. women. “The definition of a stereotype is any commonly known public belief about a certain social group or a type of individual. Stereotypes are often confused with prejudices, because, like prejudices, a stereotype is based on a prior assumption. Stereotypes are often created about people of specific cultures or races. Almost every culture or race has a stereotype, including Jewish people, Blacks, Irish people, and Polish people, among others. Stereotypes are not just centered on different races and backgrounds, however. Gender stereotypes also exist. For example, if you say that men are better than women, you’re stereotyping all men and all women. If you say that all women like to cook, you are stereotyping women. Sexual orientation stereotypes are also common. These stereotypes occur when you have negative views on gays, lesbians, and transgender individuals. People who have these negative views are often known as homophobic (Stereotype Examples)”. Our concerns of people that are different from us would be: are these people okay to be around, will they attempt to hurt me if I wear this color, what is their motive or way of thinking, people who wear their pants below their butts are gangsters, and etc.. I find myself curious of other people’s identities that are from a different culture because I always ask myself "how differently were they raised by their...

...very inaccurate, leaving erroneous ideas in the minds of citizens on a global level. Stereotypes, though originating as convenient sorting mechanisms, instead, influence our thinking process. Crash depicts numerous characters and brings them together through carjacking, car accidents and shootings. The movie Crash represents the nature of race relations in America. Most of the characters depicted in the film are racially opinionated in some way, and become mixed up in conflicts which force them to examine their own discrimination. The films show how one stereotype, one miscommunication or lack of communication, could turn into an unstable situation. Through these characters' connections and lack of communication, the film tries to show prejudice and racism is frequent and common in present America. Problems of race and sex make a group of strangers in Los Angeles to psychologically and physically crash in the drama. Graham is a police officer whose brother is a street criminal, and it hurts him to know his mother cares more about his good-for-nothing brother than him. ... Lori Woodard PHI 103 Aaron Novinger May 7, 2012 Running Head: Common Stereotypes Stereotyping in generally is characterized as a way of discrimination through prejudicial preconceived perceptions. It mainly consists of hasty generalizations about an individual based on these prejudices. Some examples of common misconceptional prejudices are women are the weaker sex, Jewish people are obsessed with money, and Blacks are more likely to be anti-social, violent, and more likely to commit a crime. (Rivers, 2011)In my lifetime, I have faced many stereotypes. Of the many that are out there, the three main stereotypes I still face today are gender stereotyping, social and economic status stereotyping, and ethnical stereotyping. Gender stereotyping has been one of the most common stereotypes I have had to face. This is because I had been born a female. The most common stereotypes about woman are they are the weaker sex, they are better barefoot and pregnant, and their place is to raise the children and to stay in the kitchen. This perception is based on a view that society...
