Utah Opera and Symphony Merger

A1: Bill Bailey can utilize the Adam’s Equity Theory of Motivation to support the merger. “Defined generally, equity theory is a model of motivation that explains how people strive for fairness and justice in social exchanges or give-and-take relationships” (Kreitner pg. 213). The theory explains the process of the internal factors that influence an employee’s motivation by focusing on a balance of inputs and outputs. Examples of inputs are hard work, enthusiasm, and skill level. Examples of outputs are salary, benefits, and recognition. Finding a reasonable balance between the two ensures a strong, productive, motivational relationship with the employee. Interactional justice is a component of the theory and is achieved when employees feel fairly treated when procedures are put into operation. This is achieved by Billy Bailey and his executive team communicating truthfully to the employees. It’s also achieved by treating them with courtesy and respect. Bill Bailey can help support the merger by recognizing that his employees have varying sensitivities to their view of equity and inequity. He needs to convey that the merger will take into account the best outcome for all of those involved.

A2: Scott Parker can use Maslow’s Need Hierarchy theory of motivation to convince Mrs. Abravanel to support the merger. The theory is based off of five basic needs. The five needs listed in Maslow’s pyramid are physiological, safety, social, esteem and self-actualization. Psychological includes breathing, sleeping, sex, and human nature needs. Psychological needs are not effecting Mrs. Aravanel’s decision to support the merger. Social motivation is the sense of belonging and love. Love is the basic need for a person to feel like they belong. Scott needs to show that the merger of the two organizations will provide a greater sense of belonging

He expressed concerns about the different business models of the two different companies. The Opera hires people as needed and can adjust projects and staffing as needed. The symphony is a 52 week orchestra without that flexibility. He is also concerned the Opera could lose its identity. He should utilize Adam’s Equity Theory of Motivation. He can address the Opera’s employees as wanting to have their contributed work being individually recognized aside from the symphony. They also have a very different budget. The Opera needs to be able to allocate resources where useful and as business needs dictate. This could create more and better jobs for the employees.
