Name: Nico Class: 601 Teacher: Ms S The Jim Crow Laws in the Parker Inheritance show that many people enforce racial segregation, for example, when Enoch and his family don’t get the same services as other people. Over all, the Jim Crow laws were a series of laws in the 19th century that made people of color be treated differently and unfairly. The Jim Crow laws also made it so African Americans did not have the right to vote, be represented in government, and get underpaid in the workforce. In 1898 the southern states made it so only people with land or people who paid certain taxes and could read and do math better could vote. They also made it so in some places you have to pass a test in order to be able to vote, making the test almost impossible; setting the amount of African American voters from 130,334 to 1,342, that's only one percent of what it …show more content…
One example of this in the book is chapter 9, In chapter 9 Enoch and his family are sharecropping to Mr Tidwell and owe him debt so Mr Tidwell waits until the day that they have to start their own crops to make them pay it back making them plant his farm putting them in an infinite circle of debt. On page 179 (Chapter 33) Dub (Enoch) was attacked by 3 people in white suits with masks, Dub’s front two teeth were missing, he had a broken nose, and was covered in scrapes and cuts. Dub was drowning in blood. The book also states that there was a doll left in Dub’s car, “The baby doll’s white skin had been painted the color of midnight, with thick cherry-red lipstick smeared over its small mouth. One way this can be seen is through prejudice which categories people based on age, sex, and social class. These can be good and bad. Institutional racism is a big deal today. Some companies will not hire a person simply because of their color or their sex. Another way to say this is racial discrimination which lets race or color impact a person’s ability to get a job. People like to think this doesn’t really happen when the harsh reality is that it happens all the time. Laws have been made to try and prevent this from happening but companies still practice it. Groups like the EEOC (equal employment opportunity commission) were created to enforce laws against discrimination in the work place. Some things we can do to change this is to look at person for their work ethic and quality and ignore the color of their skin or whether they are male or female. Regulated by state law, miscegenation was illegal in many states for decades. However, interracial marriage in the United States has been fully legal in all U.S. states since the 1967 Supreme Court decision, Loving v.
