Jimmy Cross Archetype

The book of Matthew states: “Come to me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” With chaos swarming around us, the only way to find that “rest” is to drawn near the Creator and make a change in life. In “A Clean, Well-Lighted Place” and “The Things They Carried,” two characters, the old man and Jimmy Cross, are faced with physical and emotional trails, and in both cases, men are in tough situations and are phased with the same choice; however, they are left with two different outcomes. Through the use of characterization and archetype, Ernest Hemingway and Tim O’Brien portray the idea that in order to be content, we must first find inner-peace with the One that created us, and accept the responsibilities that God has given us. In "A Clean, Well-Lighted Place," the old man's character development portrays the idea that dissatisfaction with one's life and reluctant to grasp control can lead to depression. The old man is first identified as an ordinary man …show more content…
Instead of denying his own dissatisfaction, Jimmy sacrifices himself for his platoon, much like Jesus did for the world. An article on Spark notes describes this offering as: “he makes a personal sacrifice, burning the letters from Martha so that her presence will no longer distract him. In each case, Cross makes a Christ-like sacrifice so that his fellow men can carry on without being crippled by grief and guilt.” Jimmy realizes that there is a purpose for his life and reacts like my Savior. The difference between Jimmy and the old man is that Jimmy came to his senses and acknowledged that he has a task to do. In the Book of Luke, it is written: "Whoever wants to be my follower, must take up his cross daily, and follow me." This Bible verse suggests that we must disregard what is important to us, letters from a loved one or safety, and follow Christ wherever He may lead, including a war

...Praise for The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down “Fadiman describes with extraordinary skill the colliding worlds of Western medicine and Hmong culture.” —The New Yorker “This fine book recounts a poignant tragedy…It has no heroes or villains, but it has an abundance of innocent suffering, and it most certainly does have a moral…[A] sad, excellent book.” —Melvin Konner, The New York Times Book Review “An intriguing, spirit-lifting, extraordinary exploration of two cultures in uneasy coexistence…A wonderful aspect of Fadiman’s book is her even-handed, detailed presentation of these disparate cultures and divergent views—not with cool, dispassionate fairness but rather with a warm, involved interest that sees and embraces both sides of each issue…Superb, informal cultural anthropology—eye-opening, readable, utterly engaging.” —Carole Horn, The Washington Post Book World “This is a book that should be deeply disturbing to anyone who has given so much as a moment’s thought to the state of American medicine. But it is much more…People are presented as [Fadiman] saw them, in their humility and their frailty—and their nobility.” —Sherwin B. Nuland, The New Republic 3/462 “Anne Fadiman’s phenomenal first book, The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down, brings to life the enduring power of parental love in an impoverished refugee family struggling to protect their seriously ill infant daughter and ancient spiritual traditions from the tyranny of welfare bureaucrats and intolerant...

For Isabella and Calista Stone When you are eighty years old, and in a quiet moment of reflection narrating for only yourself the most personal version of your life story, the telling that will be most compact and meaningful will be the series of choices you have made. In the end, we are our choices. —Jeff Bezos, commencement speech at Princeton University, May 30, 2010 Prologue In the early 1970s, an industrious advertising executive named Julie Ray became fascinated with an unconventional public-school program for gifted children in Houston, Texas. Her son was among the first students enrolled in what would later be called the Vanguard program, which stoked creativity and independence in its students and nurtured expansive, outside-the-box thinking. Ray grew so enamored with the curriculum and the community of enthusiastic teachers and parents that she set out to research similar schools around the state with an eye toward writing a book about...
