I started at UC with full intent to graduate with honors from interior design. There was one main problem with this dream of mine; I hadn’t chosen my major after years of passion on the subject matter but rather on a whim. It wasn’t my first choice of major, initially I was interested in Architecture for equally flimsy reasons. I was interested in architecture because I liked building houses in the sims and an upper classmen friend of mine who I worked closely with in an extracurricular wanted to be an architect. My decision to apply for interior was an even snappier decision. I didn’t realize it until then but I am a straight forward thinker. I tend to just follow the first logical path; which makes me terrible at abstract art, which we did a lot of. Our first assignments were collages about the movie Jiro Dreams of Sushi, it’s a documentary about a guy who makes sushi. I really couldn’t understand how this movie about a man and his fish helped us develop skills to design buildings inside and out. Especially the collage aspect what did tacking some pieces of paper onto other paper have to do with anything other than grade school art class? We watched several other movies during the semester some of which I found interesting although not especially relevant. I struggled to relate our other projects to what I thought interior design was as well, how did making watercolor post cards help me in any way, a majority of modern architecture is done on computers. Most of what we did was abstract work from bending strange paper shapes to making greyscale marker work. I got a bit of a reputation in my studio for critiquing technique work om those pieces, really the only reason I did that was because I had no idea what to say composition
