To succeed managers need to understand the meaning of power and politics, how power is acquired and how politics should be utilised. Power and politics may be the sources of solutions but can create problems in organisation. This essay asks you to explore the issues associated with power and politics in organisational life.

Your essay should include the following: • Define the concept of power in the workplace. • Define the concept of politics in the workplace. • Explain how a manger could work to acquire power. • Explain how a manger could work to become politically active. • Discuss the impact of power and politics in organisations. • Discuss some of the ethical implications of power and politics in organisations.

Description: Each student is required to conduct and document a “Critical Analysis” of two of the topics (e.g., motivation and leadership) covered in Organisational Behaviour. The critical analysis for each topic requires: • Presenting a brief review of the topic. • Discussion of 2-­‐3 theories relevant to the topic. • Using research and analysis to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each topic to a manager in an organisation. • Presenting CURRENT examples of each OB topic being reported on in the media (e.g., press, business magazines or TV News programs). The individual report must include: • Table of contents. • Introduction (only one introduction is required for the report). • Critical analysis of the two topics chosen including presentation of examples of each from the media. • Conclusion (only one conclusion is required for the report). 3 hours Description: The Final Examination is worth 50% of the marks for the subject. The examination will be 3 hours with 10 minutes reading time. The exam will be in two parts – the short answer questions assess general knowledge of the models, theories and concepts of organizational behaviour; the compulsory question will assess the ability to apply this understanding. The marks allocation for the exam is : • • The time and date of the exam will be advised during the trimester. You will be provided with an exam focus sheet.
