Joaquin Murieta or Murrieta was known as a bandit who became a hero for the Mexican-Americans in California. He was born in Alamos, Sonora. He married and migrated with his wife to California in 1848. In the Gold Rush he tried prospecting. The Yankee miners pressed the legislature in Sacramento in 1850 to pass the Greaser Act and the Foreign Miners Act to try and drive out the Mexicans. Joaquin responded to their actions by leading outlaws that raided up and down the San Joaquin and Sacramento valleys, robbing gold miners and holding up stages. The California governor offered a reward for his capture, dead or alive after the events.
