...The mayor surprised Chong with an offer to help with land zoning if Jextra would help finance a new primary school (or at least Chong thought that was what he had been asked for). The second issue involved the job performance of Arif Alam, Jextra’s top-performing buyer. Alam, a buyer of fresh fruit and vegetables, consistently negotiated better contracts than Jextra’s fifteen other buyers and, Chong believed, better than Jextra’s competitors. The contracts negotiated by Alam certainly contributed to the excellent financial performance of Jextra Malaysia. Nevertheless, Chong could not help wondering if there was more to the picture than he was aware of. The retail industry in Malaysia was notorious for buyers accepting money and gifts from suppliers. A few days ago, Chong had accidentally overheard two of his accounting employees speculating that Alam must be accepting gifts, or even taking bribes—how else could he get such good contracts? Chong was not sure what to do. Should he confront Alam? Or, to use one of his English colleague’s favorite expressions, should he let sleeping dogs lie? Chong knew that his boss expected him to aggressively grow the business, so perhaps it would be best to accept the mayor’s offer and deal with Alam later. tC Jextra Malaysia Jextra Stores, a large Asian retailer, was based in...

...1.0 INTRODUCTION 2.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY Media is everywhere. TV, Internet, computer and video games all vie for our children's attention. Nowadays, we can easily found children as young as two years old are playing with an electronic devices and gadgets anywhere. As students head back to school with the latest tablets, laptops and smart phones in their knapsacks, some parents worry the abundance of gadgets in their children's lives could be affecting their grades and health. President of Early Childcare and Education Council (ECCE Council) Prof Datuk Dr Chiam Heng Keng said television should never be used as "babysitters" or "educational" tools. "Scientific studies by neuroscientists have shown that for 100 billion neurons (brain cells) to be wired to form neural paths, a young child needs to interact with human beings and things in their environment. In 2010, a joint study by Ohio State University and Open University of the Netherlands surveyed 219 students and found a relationship between Facebook use and negative academic performance. It found Facebook users had GPAs in the 3.0 to 3.5 range and studied one to five hours a week; non Facebook users had GPAs in the 3.5 to 4.0 range and studied 11 to 15 hours a week. Gadgets also affect health of the kids. According to the Active Healthy Kids Canada 2012 report card, 10- to 16-year-olds get an average of 6 hours and 37 minutes of daily non-class work screen time. Only 19 per cent of this age group met the Canadian...

...1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY Emotional Intelligence comprises specific skills behaviors, and attitudes that can be learned, applied and modeled by individuals to improve personal satisfaction and career effectiveness (Nelson & Low, 2003). In other words, emotionally intelligent skills are developed to help lecturers cope with daily multiple tasks and provide substantial growth and psychological health. According to Goleman (1998) asserts that emotional intelligence, not IQ, forecast a workplace success and who inspires by the powerful of EQ as a leader. This study describes a research undertaken with a sample of lecturers from Faculty of Business Management in Universiti Teknologi MARA Shah Alam and Puncak Alam Campus, including male and female lecturers. Besides, a meta-analysis of 59 studies by Van Rooy and Viswesvaran (2004) found that emotional intelligence correlated moderately with job performance. According to Hargrevas (2001), both teaching and learning are not only concerned with knowledge, cognition and skills, but they are also emotional practices. Dewey highlighted that an educator ought to “have the sympathetic understanding of individuals as individuals which gives him an idea of what is actually going on in the minds of those who are learning” (Dewey [1938]” 1997, p. 39). Harkin (1998) found that, “effective behaviors are the most important determinants of student satisfaction with educator,” through “recognizing individuals, listening to students, showing...
