Joe Simpson Touching The Void Analysis

Commitment can be defined as the measure of an individual’s desire to succeed. Commitment refers to what allows for a promise to transform into a reality, and is the act of following through (Ashbash, 2005). This is a common occurrence within families, neighbors, employers, religious beliefs, our health, and in all things we do and say (6:5, Ephesians; 10:25, Hebrews; 1 Corinthians 6:19, 31, n.d.). Joe Simpson; the author of Touching the Void and Nando Parrado; the author of Miracle in the Andes, share the same communication of this idea throughout their writing. Throughout Joe Simpson’s novel, Touching the Void, two mountain climbers make a perilous venture to the summit of Peruvian Andes and strike tragedy on their decent, displaying the …show more content…
With the initial 40 survivors from the Fairchild F-227’s impact, dwindling to 16 at the time of their rescue 2 months later; it became detrimental to the group and their survival to not lose faith and commitment to their consequent rescue. The 16 remaining survivors, in order to survive, were required to consume the human flesh of fallen group members or otherwise risk their impending death by starvation. “We understood, intuitively, that no one in this awful place could be judged by the standards of the ordinary world.” (Parrado, 2006). This quote makes it clear that the author wants to showcase the commitment to their personal and group survival that was demonstrated by the 16 remaining survivors and how they had to challenge their moral codes. By pushing these moral boundaries and allowing themselves to accept the very limited options available, the group’s commitment was clearly displayed and …show more content…
Throughout his writing he expands on the definition of commitment being the measure of an individual’s desire to succeed. Throughout the extensive plotline of “Touching the Void”; two mountain climbers set their sights on the Peruvian Andes and aim to reach the summit. After concluding the journey to the peak of the mountain ranges, they make their careful decent linked to one another by rope. During their treacherous decent; a complication arises when Joe tumbles from a ledge and falls suspending in free space held up by the rope attached to Simon. Teamwork and commitment to one another’s survival is vividly displayed throughout the text. “Who said one man can’t rescue another…We had changed from climbing to rescue and the partnership had worked just as effectively” (Simpson, 2004). The quoted text accurately represents the goals, commitment and desire to succeed shared by the two men on their decent from the mountain. Even through disaster, the commitment of the two men prevails which allows them to continue on even when the probable outcome does not seem favorable. The Sony Pictures film, ‘The pursuit of Happyness’, shares similar ideas of commitment evident throughout Joe Simpson’s text. “You got a dream... You gotta protect it. People can't do somethin' themselves, they wanna tell you you can't do it. If you want somethin', go get it. Period”

Bloodlines of the Illuminati

...Bloodlines of Illuminati by: Fritz Springmeier, 1995 Introduction: I am pleased & honored to present this book to those in the world who love the truth. This is a book for lovers of the Truth. This is a book for those who are already familiar with my past writings. An Illuminati Grand Master once said that the world is a stage and we are all actors. Of course this was not an original thought, but it certainly is a way of describing the Illuminati view of how the world works. The people of the world are an audience to which the Illuminati entertain with propaganda. Just one of the thousands of recent examples of this type of acting done for the public was President Bill Clinton’s 1995 State of the Union address. The speech was designed to push all of the warm fuzzy buttons of his listening audience that he could. All the green lights for acceptance were systematically pushed by the President’s speech with the help of a controlled congressional audience. The truth on the other hand doesn’t always tickle the ear and warm the ego of its listeners. The light of truth in this book will be too bright for some people who will want to return to the safe comfort of their darkness. I am not a conspiracy theorist. I deal with real facts, not theory. Some of the people I write about, I have met. Some of the people I expose are alive and very dangerous. The darkness has never liked the light. Yet, many of the secrets of the Illuminati are locked up tightly simply because secrecy is a way...

PREFACE Rationale We agreed to produce the instructor’s manual for the sixth edition of A First Look at Communication Theory because it’s a first-rate book and because we enjoy talking and writing about pedagogy. Yet when we recall the discussions we’ve had with colleagues about instructor’s manuals over the years, two unnerving comments stick with us: “I don’t find them much help”; and (even worse) “I never look at them.” And, if the truth be told, we were often the people making such points! With these statements in mind, we have done some serious soul-searching about the texts that so many teachers—ourselves...

...C h a p t e r 1 Prewriting GETTING STARTED (OR SOUP-CAN LABELS CAN BE FASCINATING) For many writers, getting started is the hardest part. You may have noticed that when it is time to begin a writing assignment, you suddenly develop an enormous desire to straighten your books, water your plants, or sharpen your pencils for the fifth time. If this situation sounds familiar, you may find it reassuring to know that many professionals undergo these same strange compulsions before they begin writing. Jean Kerr, author of Please Don’t Eat the Daisies, admits that she often finds herself in the kitchen reading soup-can labels—or anything—in order to prolong the moments before taking pen in hand. John C. Calhoun, vice president under Andrew Jackson, insisted he had to plow his fields before he could write, and Joseph Conrad, author of Lord Jim and other novels, is said to have cried on occasion from the sheer dread of sitting down to compose his stories. To spare you as much hand-wringing as possible, this chapter presents some practical suggestions on how to begin writing your short essay. Although all writers must find the methods that work best for them, you may find some of the following ideas helpful. But no matter how you actually begin putting words on paper, it is absolutely essential to maintain two basic ideas concerning your writing task. Before you write a single sentence, you should always remind yourself that 1. You have some valuable ideas to tell your reader,...
