Joel Einstein, a student at Australian National University, analyzes the claim that the high levels of trade between the United States and China make war unlikely, if not impossible, in his essay, “Economic Interdependence and Conflict -- The Case of the US and China.” The article was written in May of 2016 as a part of Einstein’s university degree, making his audience more knowledgeable, specifically in the field of global relations. Einstein’s purpose is to bring light to the rising tensions between the US and China and support that economic interdependence alone can not prevent conflict, but that it is just one of many variables to be considered. He constantly presents his evidence in a way that the reader is able to follow. His organization of an argument usually begins with the statement of a claim, followed by evidence to support or refute the claim, and ends with an analysis of the example that lets the reader intuitively understand his argument. This style can be seen in paragraph 9. Einstein presents the claim that “if a highly dependent state expects future trade to be high, decision makers will behave as many liberals predict and treat war as a less appealing option.” He follows with an example of conflict in 1914 because German leaders expected challenges to long-term security. Einstein connects the example with a phrase, “Via this framework,” that leads the reader straight into the point that if it was expected a US-China trade war was about to erupt, then the expectation would probably cause a rise in conflict. This is just one example, but all of Einstein’s points are presented in this fashion.
