In the early to mid 19th century, America was blossoming into her empiratic beauty. The Great War had just ended, new laboring laws were being enforced, and the roaring twenties were all the rage. On the political side of things, three very popular presidents were in office during this timeframe. These three men were Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow WIlson, and Theodore’s cousin, Franklin D. Roosevelt. In the timeless novel, The Progressive Presidents, author John Morton Blum captured the reader’s attention by showing a glimpse into the lives of these three progressivists and strengthened the idea liberalism. With America having endless opportunities around every corner, but also hindering under internal and external issues, the country was searching for a natural born leader who could save their home country from despair and turn America into the powerful empire the country desired. What made Wilson stand out like a sore thumb was his views on progressivism. Wilson wanted to flip the importance of the office and people by making a smaller government in America and making a large emphasis on the importance of people’s business. Wilson focused on the outdated banks, the currency turning from outrages taxes to tariffs, but most importantly, having a bond with Asia. On pages 81-83, Blum discussed how Wilson wanted “to help China in some way.” During this time, China was under constant attack from other powerful countries. Wilson jumped into the war to free the chinese government only to pull out when no progress was made.
