An Analytical Essay: Abigail Adams's Declaration Of Independence

...once said, “Well, knowledge is a fine thing, and mother Eve thought so; but she smarted so severely for hers, that most of her daughters have been afraid of it since” (Adams, Abigail. Letter to Elizabeth Shaw). In every American elementary school classroom, children are being told the story of the country, how George Washington crossed the Delaware River, how Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence, and how America, a colony still in infancy, managed to gain independence from powerful Britain. The Founding Fathers are essential historical personages that every American child is well schooled in, but the women who helped shape the country are rarely discussed. Abigail Adams is mostly known as the wife of the second president John Adams, but she was much more than that, and left an indelible imprint on the political landscape of the time. She is a Founding Mother- full of spark, depth, and intelligence. SUMMARY Abigail Adams was an intelligent woman from the day she was born until the day she died. She was raised to have a strong sense of morals and beliefs, as well as a love for education. Her...

How Did Dwight David Eisenhower Change The World

...were married on July 1 that year (Darby 24). This day was also the day he was promoted to First Lieutenant (“Dwight D. Eisenhower”2). While things were bliss for the newlyweds World War I had been on going in Europe for two year, and finally on April 2, 1917 President Woodrow Wilson declared war and Ike believed he belonged in it. Instead of going overseas, he was promoted to Captain and sent to train at Fort Oglethorpe (Darby 25). Eisenhower did receive a blessing in 1917 though when Mamie gave him his first son, Doud Dwight Eisenhower (“Dwight D. Eisenhower”2). The baby was born in San Antonio and Ike could not be there (“The New York Times”1). Eisenhower felt he was getting nowhere in his career, but he and his family enjoyed the army social scene (Darby 29). Dwight and Mamie nicknamed their son “Ikky” and absolutely adored him. Tragedy once again struck the Eisenhower family when January 2, 1921 Ikky died of scarlet fever in his father’s arms (“The New York Times”2). Ike had said the greatest disaster in his life was the loss of his son (Darby 30). Although the original wound never healed, Mamie and Dwight had a second son, John Sheldon Doud Eisenhower (“Dwight D. Eisenhower”2). Sadly, Dwight and John never could be close; Dwight was against it (“The New York Times”3). In 1922, Eisenhower became the executive officer to General Fox Connor in Panama. In 1924, Eisenhower was accepted to the Command and General Staff School, and graduated top of his class (“Dwight D. Eisenhower”2)...

...Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill Biography The English statesman and author Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill (1874-1965) led Britain during World War II and is often described as the "savior of his country." Sir Winston Churchill's exact place in the political history of the 20th century is, and will continue to be, a subject of debate and polemical writing. Where he succeeded, and how much he personally had to do with that success, and where he failed, and why, remain to be established. That he was a political figure of enormous influence and importance, belonging in many ways to an age earlier than the 20th century, and that he fitted uneasily into the constraints of British party politics until his moment came in 1940 are not in doubt. Until recently his reputation during the years from 1940 onward was scarcely questioned. But now historians are beginning to reassess his career in just the same way as Churchill himself tried to revise T. B. Macaulay's account of the Duke of Marlborough by writing a multivolumed Life of his distinguished ancestor (completed in 1938). Churchill's record both before 1939 and after 1945 was for the most part undistinguished. But as Anthony Storr writes: "In 1940 Churchill became the hero that he had always dreamed of being. … In that dark time, what England needed was not a shrewd, equable, balanced leader. She needed a prophet, a heroic visionary, a man who could dream dreams of victory when all seemed lost. Winston Churchill...
