CHAPTER 17 PROCESS COSTING 17-1 Industries using process costing in their manufacturing area include chemical processing, oil refining, pharmaceuticals, plastics, brick and tile manufacturing, semiconductor chips, beverages, and breakfast cereals. 17-2 Process costing systems separate costs into cost categories according to the timing of when costs are introduced into the process. Often, only two cost classifications, direct materials and conversion costs, are necessary. Direct materials are frequently added at one point in time, often the start or the end of the process. All conversion costs are added at about the same time, but in a pattern different from direct materials costs. Conversion costs are often added throughout the process, which can of any length of time, lasting from seconds to several months. 17-3 Equivalent units is a derived amount of output units that takes the quantity of each input (factor of production) in units completed or in incomplete units in work in process, and converts the quantity of input into the amount of completed output units that could be made with that quantity of input. Each equivalent unit is comprised of the physical quantities of direct materials or conversion costs inputs necessary to produce output of one fully completed unit. Equivalent unit measures are necessary since all physical units are not completed to the same extent at the same time. 17-4 The accuracy of the estimates of completion depends on the care and skill of the estimator and the nature of the process. Semiconductor chips may differ substantially in the finishing necessary to obtain a final product. The amount of work necessary to finish a product may not always be easy to ascertain in advance. 17-5 The five key steps in process costing follow: Step 1: Summarize the flow of physical units of output. Step 2: Compute output in terms of equivalent units. Step

For both consumer and business segmentation you can easily get the information from government reports (census), researching other reports (news media), Wall Street Journal and other reporting financials. Segmentation will offer the marketer a shorter time frame and lower cost on their research. (Know this) In viewing if a segment is worth going after a target market the marketer must answer the questions set for them below: Does the market show signs of growth? ...Case #1 Personally, I am in a full support, to put the customers first and shareholders last. Because companies sell trust and if you put the customers first then you’re showing that you care for them. In return, the customers will feel secure and confident to buy the company’s products or services. For example Johnson & Johnson company’s credos is “A company that put customers first and shareholders last ultimately benefited both groups”. I don't think the company would have recovered from the incident of tampering with Tylenol in 1982 if the CEO, Burke, did not choose to put customers first. I mean, if he hadn't taken such drastic measures, for consumers there might have always been a bit of uncertainty about buying Tylenol products. I believe that the acceptance of financial losses and maintaining a strong, ethical business core helped rebuild and make the J & J stronger. This proves how an organization and a CEO with corporate social responsibility cores can handle a catastrophe by doing the right thing worldwide. At the end, this social responsibility core idea benefited the customers, employees and shareholders in return. In conclusion, I also think corporations should act in the public interest whenever it is right for them to do it; when not putting in danger their bottom line. Like everything in life, moderation and self-control should be practice, meaning that the company should focus on its interest but also should focus on increasing the social responsibility...

A Johnson and Johnson Crisis

...A Johnson and Johnson Crisis Amanda Ferri University of Phoenix Darci DelTorto Tuesday, June 5, 2012 In 1955, McNeil Pharmacies introduced the first aspirin-free pain reliever for children and called it Tylenol Elixir. In 1959 when Johnson and Johnson acquired the brand, the medicine’s net sales were $11.4 million and by the following year the prescription only drug was approved for sale over the counter. In 1961, the sales of Tylenol kept rising and options for the drug kept growing and now included an adult regular strength formula. By 1975 Tylenol’s line of products became the 5th best selling brand of any analgesic in the United States. This also helped Johnson and Johnson create the McNeil Consumer Products Division to manage the rapidly expanding over the counter business. A year passes and McNeil launches the next best product of the company’s name, Tylenol Extra Strength tablets, becoming the number 1 branded over the counter analgesic in the U.S. Some say so much success comes at a price, and for Tylenol and Johnson and Johnson, the price became high in 1982. September 29 of 1982 was the start of a major country-wide scare concerning Tylenol Extra Strength. After becoming McNeil’s best selling product, Tylenol was held responsible for killing 7 people in the Chicago area. After investigations and autopsies, authorities found that the pills taken by these 7 people were laced with cyanide. Cyanide is a fast acting, very harmful even chemical. It can be found in...
