Types of Joints

...Type of Joint | Location | Structure | Function | Fibrous | The fibrous joints are sort of connective sutures in the skull and pelvic girdle of the horse. These joints generally allow little to no movement. | Fibrous joints are made up of connective tissue. There is no cavity or space between the bones generally allowing no movement. There 3 types of fibrous joints; sutures, syndesmoses and gomphoses. | These joints are not joints that allow movement between any of the bones within the horses body. These joints are purely just joints that hold other sections of bone together but only structurally such as holding the skull together. | Cartilaginous | The cartilaginous joints are joined by cartilage such as the joint between the sternum and rib and also between vertebrae of the spine. These joints only allow slight movement. | These are joints joined by cartilage to one another. There are two types of cartilaginous joints; synchondrosis and symphyses. The first are found in developing bones usually in young horses and hyaline cartilage covers the end of the bone but the connection is made through fibrocartilage. | These joints allow very little movement but does allow some. These primarily are in place to provide structure, support, stability and protection of the bone. They reduce friction and also acts as a shock absorbed for any sudden blows. | Synovial | These joints meet together in a joint capsule such as where the carpus and radius meet. | These are the only joints...

Synarthrotic Joint

...In essence, synarthrotic joint is a type of joint which allows minimal no or no movement under typical conditions. Most synarthroses joints are fibrous. Gomphosis and Suture joints are synarthroses. Synchondroses are found in the epiphyseal plates of developing bones in children. In symphyses, hyaline ligament covers the end of the bone; however the association between bones happens through fibrocartilage. Symphyses are found at the joints amongst vertebrae and between the pubic bones (Muscolino, 2011). There are four types of synarthrotic joints that are characterized according to the manner in which the bones connect and they include Synchondroses, Gomphosis, sutures and synostoses. Synchondroses are joints that are connected by hyaline cartilage and are cartilaginous and they are found in the epiphyseal plate.. Sutures are fibrous joints made of a thin layer of dense fibrous connective tissue that unites skull bones. Gomphoses are joints in which a conical peg fits into a socket and is found in the sockets of the teeth. Synostoses are found in the...

Cartilaginous Joints

...Vertebral cartilaginous joints occurs where the association between the articulating bones is comprised of ligament for instance between vertebrae in the spine. A fibrocartilaginous joint is formed between the nearby vertebral bodies with fibrocartilaginous intervertebral circles situated between the bodies (Dihlmann, 1985). Each circle is comprised of a thick mass, the core pulposus, which is encompassed by the annulus fibrosus usually comprised of extreme fibrous layers. Posterior and Anterior longitudinal tendons keep running in groups down the front and back surfaces of the vertebral bodies from the skull to the sacrum. They help to provide stability to the vertebral column. Synchondroses are transitory joints which are just present in children, up until the end of adolescence, for instance, the epiphyseal plates in long bones. Symphesis joints are permanent cartilaginous joints, for instance the pubic symphesis....

Joint Pain Seminar

...Joint Pain Seminar Unfortunately I was unable to attend the speaker series at the Metro Center. I was working an event at the hospital called “Reducing Joint Pain”. In the marketing department I have been working a lot in the program Spirit of Women. This program has several events and seminars throughout each season to help women with preventative health care. They range from Stress Management to Diabetes to Cancer etc. There is a doctor (sometimes two) that gives a presentation on the given topic and then gives the opportunity for questions after. Dr. Rishi Balkissoon and Dr. Katherine Rizzone both did a phenomenal job giving reasons for arthritis, what they can do to help, and what you should and shouldn’t do to help with your arthritis pain. I was working the event, but I actually learned quite a bit. I have had two knee surgeries (ACL) and I have joint pain because of it. They gave great advice for different kinds of shoes to wear and different things to try rather than going straight to the doctor, like physical therapy. I also learned that if you mix rubbing alcohol and water in a plastic bag and then freeze it, it creates a gel pack. Super easy and cheap! There are also a lot of lifestyle changes that can prevent surgery. Staying active is key. If you have a hard time moving around due to weight, Dr. Rizzone suggested using a pool. Diet can help, for every 3-4 lbs. off your stomach it equals 8-10 lbs. off your knees. I feel like this is very important information...

Scapular Joint Function

...The dynamic function of scapular humeral rhythm is essential for normal shoulder joint mobility. The scapulothoracic articulation is formed by the convex surface of the posterior thoracic cage and the concave anterior surface of the scapula and the scapula moves through the gliding mechanism over the convex posterolateral surface of thoracic cage. Physical therapists cannot overlook the scapulohumeral joint function while performing evaluations for patients suffering from shoulder complex ailments. The most common example is in stroke patients where scapulothoracic mobilization is very essential to improve shoulder range of motion, prevent pain and maintain joint integrity. During normal shoulder movement, the scapulothoracic...

Shoulder Joint Replacement Procedure

...Introduction Shoulder joint replacement is surgery to replace damaged parts of the shoulder joint with artificial parts (prostheses). Joint Venture

...A joint venture is a partnership or alliance among two or more businesses or organizations based on shared expertise or resources to achieve a particular goal.1 There are many good business reasons to participate in a joint venture partnering with a business that has complementary abilities and resources, such as finance, distribution channels, or technology, makes good sense. These are just some of the reasons partnerships formed by joint venture are becoming increasingly popular. A joint venture is also considered a strategic alliance between two or more individuals or entities to engage in a specific project or undertaking. Partnerships and joint ventures can be similar but in fact can have significantly different implications for those involved. A partnership usually involves a continuing, long-term business relationship, whereas a joint venture is based on a single business project. Parties enter joint ventures to gain individual benefits, usually a share of the project objective. This may be to develop a product or intellectual property rather than joint or collective profits, as is the case with a general or limited partnership. A joint venture isn’t like a general partnership; it’s not a separate legal entity. Revenues, expenses and asset ownership usually flow through the joint venture to the participants, since the joint venture itself has no legal status. Once the joint venture has met its goals the entity ceases to exist. Being a part of a joint venture has its...

Joint Commission

...The Joint Commission, also known as JCAHO (Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations) refers to a private organization (not-for-profit) that evaluates, as well as accredits about 16,000 US-based health care organizations. Accreditation refers to a voluntary process in which accrediting bodies like the Joint Commission goes to a health facility to carry out quality, as well as processes checks (Healthfinder.gov., 2016). Although it could be older than this, the origin of the Joint Commission can be traced back to the establishment of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) back in 1913, which then proceeded to carry out unpaid onsite inspections of hospitals by 1918. In 1951, the American Hospital Association, the American College of Physicians, the American Medical Association, as well as the Canadian Medical Association came together with the ACS to establish the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals (JCAH). JCAH was founded as a self-reliant not-for-profit association whose main purpose was to deliver voluntary accreditation in order to fulfill the then stipulated minimum quality standards (The Joint Commission, n.d). Moving forward, it was in 1970 that the values of quality required for accreditation were modified in order to represent the uppermost achievable level. In 1987, JCAH was re-titled to become the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO). It was then condensed into modern day The Joint Commission following...
