Then he instantly popped up and continued forward. Jonas kept going forward because he was so determined to save Gabe, and get out of the town. Questions were against the rules his whole childhood until he became the receiver. For instance, It was really hard for Jonas to be brave enough to ask. The Giver

...In “The Giver”, we are introduced to Jonas, the eleven-year-old protagonist of the story, as he struggles to find the right word to describe his feelings as he approaches an important milestone. He rejects “frightened” as too strong a word, recalling a time when he had really been frightened: a year ago, an unidentified aircraft flew over his community; it was a strange and unprecedented event, since Pilots were not allowed to fly over the community. As Jonas remembers the community reaction to the event, we learn more about the society in which he lives. It is extremely structured, with official orders transmitted through loudspeakers planted all around the community. As a punishment, the pilot was “released” from the community, the worst fate that can befall a citizen. Jonas decides he is apprehensive, not frightened (Jonas and his society value the use of precise and accurate language), about the important thing that is going to happen in December. Jonas thinks he lives in a perfect world. He lives in a highly ordered community where there is no pain, but he learns that there is a price to pay for this kind of life and discovers humanity’s long forgotten pains and joys. He finds out that he is living in a twisted messed up imperfect “utopia”. There is no war or fear or pain. There are no choices. Every person is assigned a role in the Community. When Jonas turns twelve, he is singled out to receive special training from The Giver. The Giver alone holds the memories of the true...

Describe The Relationship Between The Giver And His Family

...The relationship between Jonas and his family resembles a highly formal version of the traditional family unt. While the relationship between the Giver and Jonas is the more casual father-son relationship. There is a caring familiarity in both relationships, but the Giver-Jonas relationship has a more genuine and deeply involved emotional attachment. The idea of sameness has made emotional responses obsolete and unnecessary, this is not an ideal that i feel makes a good family. In the relationship between Jonas and his parents, there is a general caring of each other, but no true emotional attachment. It is more like an instructional or teaching environment. When he asks his parents if they love him, they correct him because the word love is...

Nursing Theories

...Arts Block 3 January 8, 2013 The Giver How powerful is love in any relationship? Without love in a relationship, the relationship is invalid. In the novel “The Giver” written by Lois Lowry, Jonas life was first surrounded by a no love and unemotional society. Throughout the story Jonas gains knowledge of those feelings that were once always secluded. One of my first examples, Jonas’ parents weren’t in a love filled relationship. In order to receive each other as a spouse, they had to fill out an application. The elders in the community chose them for each other by using their own wisdom of individuals’ compatibility. Needless to say, Jonas’ father and mother didn’t make the decision to be together, they were assigned to each other. They were to always lie to each other due to their assignments. In chapter 20, The Giver explains to Jonas that lying was what his parents were told to do and that it was how life was created for them. Therefore, they could never open up to each other in order to get to know and understand each other’s feelings. The concept of the word “love” was completely unknown in spousal relationships and left them nonplused about it. They never even told each other they loved each other. "You come to love not by finding the perfect person, but by seeing an imperfect person perfectly." - Sam Keen. Another one of my examples is Jonas and his father’s relationship also lacked love. In the novel there is no mention of Jonas and his father bonding together. They...
