...Ragine Williams Ms. Wilson ENG 105 – 22 15 October 2013 The Right to Cannibalism In his essay, “A Modest Proposal,” Jonathan Swift reacts to the social problem faced by the Irish in 1720’s. Swift proposes that the babies of all the poor and desolate will contribute to the feeding, and partly to the clothing, of many thousands to improve Ireland’s economy and standard of living. He says this because many women kept having children but were unable to provide for them. For example, Swift says, it will prevent these horrid practices of woman murdering their bastard children alas. He also states that his proposal would make the babies “beneficial to the public. For these reasons, he blames the politicians for the poor conditions in Ireland causing mothers to watch their children grow up beggars or thieves. In “A Modest Proposal,” Swift effectively uses sarcasm to reveal his annoyance of politicians, papists, and citizens of poverty-stricken Ireland in the late seventeenth century. Therefore, parents in dire straits should sell their children as food to improve their living conditions, to reduce their financial burdens, and to reduce their emotional attachment to their children. Unlike parents in dire straits who choose to abort their children, parents who sell their children as food improve their living conditions. The mothers in dire strait will now be able to help pay their landlords rent, and have money to spare. Swift also states that there will be a “great inducement”...

...Becoming “Agreeable” without any support The word “negligence” means a failure to exercise proper or normal care expected of a reasonably person in like circumstances of something or someone, it is marked by a carelessly easy manner. Some people having important responsibilities are reckless of their action’s consequences. In “Agreeable”, Jonathan Franzen illustrates through characterization how suffering children with negligent parents put their energy in something positive to push their own limits and encourage themselves. Through Patty’s character the author described how adult’s involving and responsibilities are important in children life. He also illustrates how parents can be either subjugated by their work, either treat everyone coldly as nobody. In our society, every single person’s first influence is their parents. Having children involves responsibilities and involvement. As people who have the power to create life, they have the duty to build their child’s character and teach values. In “Agreeable” however, Patty finds another inspiration source. “They [school athletic programs] basically saved her life and gave her a chance to realize herself as a person. […] It was from these wonderful coaches that Patty learned discipline, patience, focus, teamwork, and the ideals of good sportsmanship that helped make up for her morbid competitiveness and low self-esteem” (Franzen 43). Parents are supposed to be the major support for a child to help them psychologically grow...

...Satire influences individuals to reevaluate themselves in order to modify senseless thoughts and behaviors. Various techniques are used in order to deliver a satirist effect, those of which house wit as their main weapon. These methods harmonize the mastering of coexisting trivial and serious matters as one sarcasm, showing praise but meaning the contrary to demonstrate irony, and asking questions rhetorically. Additionally, the author might understate an issue in order to maneuver the audience towards the true importance of the topic, adversely; exaggeration is used to lower the impact of an issue to its lesser value. Collectively, these techniques are exercised to bring out the human follies and vices in society. In Molière’s Tartuffe and Jonathan Swift’s essay A Modest Proposal, that both obliquely criticize and burlesque human behavior and the perception we have towards others. Through a satirist delivery, these authors offer an insight past the seemingly obvious, and aim to improve this faulty custom of one sidedness rather than eliminating it. Although these pair of literary pieces illustrates satire, it is Molière’s play Tartuffe that generates a more effective delivery. First of all, this prevailing method is most effective due to its meticulous use of comedic language, as it better captures the attention of its readers. Second, Religious hypocrisy was demonstrated through satirist techniques, as a person's good character is made questionable as the play develops into a twisted...

...Daisy was a beautiful young woman of 25 year old. She was having a wonderful day; an amazing ray of light shone through the window. “This is a brilliant Friday,” she said to herself. She looked at the clock: it was about to strike 12 midday. Daisy was getting dressed and putting on her bright white t-shirt. She was going to meet her loving friend at the old, desolate church. As she was walking downstairs trying to do up her sea blue jeans, the clock struck noon. Dong. Daisy suddenly fell and tumbled down the stairs. She struggled to get up and she fell about like a rag doll. She stumbled against the shining window and looked outside. Daisy turned around because of the noise she heard on the window pane. Lighting flashed across it. At that moment she saw an old, dead-looking, oak tree struck by lighting. She was heartbroken because she had seen that tree grow from when it was young. From the corner of her blazing blue eyes, she saw the letters D.…E….A….T….H in bold red underneath the tree. Daisy went out of her mansion to a desolate church, where she was going to meet her friend David, a childhood friend. She felt the breeze against her innocent, pale face. She started to tiptoe as she got closer to the old church. A stronger breeze cooled her face and made her feel uncomfortable; strange thoughts started coming into her mind. Silence, she started to feel dizzy and nearly fell down but suddenly, her friend arrived. “Daisy, Daisy” he shouted but she didn’t move. David...

...Humanities: Culture, Continuity, and Change Monday Night Week Four Assignment Marcia Robinson, Adjunct Professor In this assignment we were asked to pick from three stories with surprise endings and give our opinion on the story. I chose “A Modest Proposal” by Jonathan Swift. With hunger, poverty, and other problems plaguing the country, Swift, suggests that they start cannibalizing those in the lower classes. He very sarcastically states that beggars should offer themselves as food for the rich, so two problems may be resolved; beggary and hunger. People are not going to begin eating one another, it’s just preposterous. It’s unthinkable for someone to offer themselves as food. Swift in his own way lashes out at the government for allowing people to starve. His story does grab the attention at the end with his “bright idea” to end hunger. In his own way, he’s attracting attention to a government that is not offering the basic needs to its citizens who cannot provide for themselves, most of no fault of their own. Economic downturns have and always will plague this planet and all civilizations on it. Eating one another is not going to solve the problem, as horrific and stomach-turning as it seems. The point where the story took the hard curve to the satire was when he suggests a child at the age of one be sold to the English as one would a steer, sheep, or swine. Then going over the top of that by saying his wife “is past child bearing age” and all he has to...

...The article “Apple’s New Organizational Structure Could Help It Move Faster”, which was found on businessinsider.com talks about how the company Apple had to change its business structure after the death of Steve Jobs and what the pros and cons of this new structure will be. Before the death of Steve Jobs, he was in charge of everything and he would be the one who would make the decisions in the company. After he passed away, the senior vice president of design Jony Ive is asking everyone in the company to collaborate with each other, something that never really happened when Steve Jobs was in charge. Everyone in the company is expecting delays because of the fact that everyone has to adjust to the company’s new structure but in the long run, they believe they can get more done by simply communicating with one another. In some certain circumstances, the company Apple was able to get more done when Steve Jobs made all of the calls because he didn’t need no one else’s approval. But since he was the only one making the decisions, he couldn’t handle everything that was going on in the company. In Chapter 11 and in class, we are taught that communication is key for a business as well as having a strong organizational structure that is understandable. Steve Jobs did not have a strong organizational structure so sometimes he would be productive and sometimes he would have delays. Being consistent is also key for a company because it shows everyone that you are able to manage a company...

...Osvaldo Santiesteban Professor Simonds, Sandra English 101 Sunday, January 19 The family “ We are united, we are strong, we are a family, family means no one gets left behind or forgotten ” I still remember these words with all the “are” in all cap painted in blue on the entrance wall of the gym or even better in the coaches offices with a big picture of the team using the goals as a background. Back in the day when I was 14 years old I went to a soccer academy for the summer and I have to say that it was one of the most beautiful, memorable, marvelous experience of my life. Most people that knew me were only bringing me down, including my mother. I never really paid attention to what people had to say because all I ever wanted to do and still do is to be able to play. Only two persons believed in me and to me, that was enough. My dad and my coach were the only ones who were there pushing me to my best both mentally and physically. Although, it took me a bunch of hard work, patience, effort, perseverance and believing in myself once I was in the academy everything fell like heaven to me. Everything started in France that’s where I first started playing. One day I was playing in a tournament a semi final game, while playing against a hard team I went for the ball and I happen to get tackled and injured real badly. My mom who was watching the game was frightened of course thinking the worst that my leg was probably broken because of the swelling. The morning after...

...I’m back… Being at home and playing at our stadium is going well for us. We started the week 3-0 playing at home and we were about to start conference playing two strong sides: Campbell (regular season champions) and Mercer (runner-up in the last conference tournament). We knew the importance of the games and the whole team was pretty focused. It was a week for really hard work targeting those two games. Thursday was game day and we were all excited to start conference (our main goal this season). It was a rainy day and the game started out really intense with both teams going forward and trying to create chances. We had the most part of possession and we were trying really hard to get the first goal. And it came on the 30th minute, with a free kick. After that we took control over the game and created a lot of chances. The game was over and the first task was accomplished with a great win 4-0. But we did not have time to celebrate because Mercer was right ahead of us. Mercer was a lot different from Campbell. They were really physical and had a really defensive mentality. The game was really though and took a huge effort from every single one of us. But in the end we came out in the winner side with another good performance! 2-1 final result.. It was a good start and we closed the series of 5 home games with 5 wins. Although everyone is very excited and happy with the results, the coach staff and the players know that it is just the beginning and if we want to accomplish...

...characteristics of man. In this voyage Swift criticizes the moral and physical corruption of man. Gulliver's third voyage, to the floating island of Laputa is one of the most satirical of the whole book. In this voyage Swift criticizes the Royal Society of England, in which he says is composed of useless philosophers, inventors, and scientists. Gulliver’s final voyage, he finds himself in the Country of the Houyhnhnms. Swift use this voyage to expand his satire to the evils of the entire human race. In the end Gulliver's dilemma is also humanity's. Developing greater virtue can lead to hating humanity's corrupt nature, but trying to escape one's own human nature because of its corruption is insanity. In Gulliver’s travels, Jonathan Swift travels to four different foreign countries, each representing a corrupt part of England. Swift criticizes the corruption of these parts, and focuses on the government, society, science, religion, and man. Not only does swift criticize the customs of each country, he mocks the naive man who has the inability to figure out the double meaning of things. Gulliver, being gullible himself, believes everything he is told, which symbolizes the irony of the English...

...A Modest Proposal was a satirical essay written by Jonathan Swift depicting the horrific conditions of Ireland and the lives of the Irish people in 1729. Swift writes the satire disguised as a social planner of the time who as Swift satirizes were known to be overly rational rather than compassionate. The author portrays and attacks the cruel and unjust oppression of Ireland by its oppressor, the mighty English and ridicules the Irish people at the same time. However, Swift's opposition is indirectly presented. Jonathan Swift is able to do so by using the persona, irony, and wit in order to expose the remarkable corruption and degradation of the Irish people, and at the same time present them with practicable solutions to their economic problem Swift uses the false persona in order to satire the social workers of the time as he saw them. Swift creates a fictional persona because by hiding his true identity he is able to convince the readers of the significance of Ireland's problem and allow them to see truth and reality. The persona is a concerned Irishman who is very intelligent, sound, and serious. He appears to be a brute and a monster for proposing something evil and immoral very calmly as if it is normal to consume the flesh of another human being. What makes his proposal to be even more depraved is that he proposes to eat the babies. The persona declares, and at exactly at one year old that I propose to provide for them, in a such a manner as, instead of being...

...A A Modest Proposal Roosevelt Wilkerson Strayer University Professor Mark A. Coppelli November 20, 2011 A Modest Proposal While reading an essay entitled A Modest Proposal, it showed me the struggles of Ireland to provide for their people ensuring the people were not starving and without a place to stay. The writings illustrated a man, Jonathan Swift, who through his travels throughout Europe including Ireland, there was something that struck him seeing the women and children living on the street and being looked at as if they were animals. While he has seen this many times while coming up and as an adult, it really did not hit him until then. He felt there had to be a solution that gets them off the street and become productive members of society. Understanding his mentality before his revelation and those that are well off, I believe he thought there had to be an attention getter that would make people really think about the problem of people being treated like animals in the street. His proposal to solve this issue rather took me by surprise as I’m sure it did most considering his proposal was a rather radical one. His proposal, which was midway through his writing, was to, in effect, beef up the children and feed them to Ireland's rich. Children from poor families could be sold into a meat market at the age of one, which could combat the issue plaguing the poor and that was the caring of kids they really could not afford to take care of. This would...

...A Modest Proposal to End Poverty When reading the 1729 proposal written by Jonathan Swift a lot of thoughts can arise in a grueling manner. How could anyone conclude that eating and selling adolescents for humans to consume can actually become the elucidation to end such poverty and over-population in Ireland? The conception is iniquitous and brazen at so many levels, especially if it was a concrete idea for the government to execute in an immoral way. While I construe Swift’s proposal as time went on I began to understand the point of view of why it lead to contemplation of figuring out how to control such devastations. I can say Swift was appalled at the upper class’s treatment of the poor, and is affront by their objections to even having to look at them. This shows me that Swift had a luminous idea of how the rich looked upon the poor as human beings. As I read on I can definitely see the sardonic tone when Swift proposes that everyone just consume adolescents, which would provide commerce and money to the impecunious families who sell their babies, and of course rid them of the need to feed that child in the first place. I can vouch for a lot of people who reads Swift’s proposal and immediately thinks he’s actually austere when it came to those mind boggling acts. I think a savvy reader will find some clues of the satirical tone. Some examples had me rethink what I might of thought before, the first one is when Swift talks about the landlords (the English people who...
