Key Events: The major events of the book of Joshua are essentially separated into three different parts, including: the conquest of the land, the division of the land, and the farewells. During the “conquest of the land,” God orders Joshua to take possession of the land and warns him to keep faith with the Covenant. After crossing the Jordan by God’s divine intervention, the Israelites begin conquering the land by first taking Jericho, and then Ai. After some mishap with the Gibeonites in the south, the Israelites overtake Hazor in the north with “Yahweh’s” help. The second division of the book of Joshua was “the division of the land.” The division of the land essentially put people in literal possession of the land. The land divisions consisted of land east and west of the Jordan River, and also cities of refuge and the cities of the Levites. Lastly, in Joshua’s “farewells,” Joshua tells the Israelite leaders that they need to remain faithful to the covenant and to Yahweh. He also tells reminds the whole land of Israel of God’s great works. Joshua then performs the last covenant ceremony and sends the people to their land. During the third year of the Civil War, as part of the Union Army, Chamberlain’s troops were ordered by Strong Vincent to anchor of the extreme left of the Union line on Little Round Top. In order to get to the front lines, the leadership skills used by Chamberlain with the mutineers have to be honored for its effective assimilation. The story about the successful leadership is illustrated in The Leadership Moment by the author Micheal Useem. The way Chamberlain defended the Union Army during the day at Little Round Top is unique for being a great example of a great leader. Although a commander leader from Maine in the Union Army, Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain was not a graduate from Universities like his other colonels; in fact he was a professor of religious studies at Bowdoin College. There were many leaders in the Army of the Potomac and the Confederate Army that made bigger impacts on the war than Col Chamberlain made. But none, that has made a bigger impact on me than Col Chamberlain. Col Chamberlain was an American college professor from the State of Maine. He volunteered in the Union Army and by the time he got out had reached the rank of brigadier general. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions at Gettysburg during the fight at Little Round Top. He went on after the Civil War to successfully run and serve as the Governor of Maine and even served as president of Bowdoin College. Col Chamberlain is probably most known for his actions during the Battle of Gettysburg where his defense of Little Round Top became famous. Chamberlain and the 20th Maine found themselves on the left flank of the Union lines and understood that if they were overrun the confederate army would have artillery advantage over the entire Union Army. The 20th held their ground due to the fact that Chamberlin had to think of new stock maneuvers suitable to the terrain to repel the attacks that were not in the Army manuals. The Confederate attacked five times until the 20th Maine was down to 1-2 rounds per man. Knowing that he couldn’t give up his position ordered a bayonet charge.
