Department of Pharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Microbiology, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria *Author for Correspondence: olubunmibiala@yahoo.co.uk, +234 80 33532299 ABSTRACT This investigation aims at comparing locally developed starches from three grains; Maize (Zea mays), Rice (Oryza sativa) and Wheat (Triticum aestivum) grains. These grains are used mainly as foods and they contain high amount of carbohydrate. The presence of starch in these grains varies and thus their use as pharmaceutical excipients will vary to the degree of their starch functionality. The powders obtained were characterised for their particle size, particle size distribution. The organoleptic and physicochemical characterisation such as viscosity, hydration capacity, swelling capacity, moisture sorption capacity, pH, flow rate and porosity, Carr’s index and Hausner’s ratio were evaluated. The powders passed the identification and solubility tests as required by the BP. Rice starch showed the least Carr’s index, Hausner’s ratio, porosity, moisture sorption capacity and the greatest flow rate. Rice starch also showed the highest hydration capacity and swelling...

...Is porn adultery? The notion that watching porn and fantasizing about other women leads to divorce and infidelity has been floating around for ages. The reason this debate has never been settled is because of the ambiguity between a person watching naked women and physically touching another woman that’s not your wife. I think porn has the potential to not only keep a marriage afloat but also strengthen it. A closer analysis into real life interviews with college students, porn statistics and a deep look into Ross Douthat’s essay on porn, it can be concluded that porn, in fact, isn’t a gateway drug to adultery. I was introduced to porn during my freshman year of high school. At the time, I was still attending T.A.S.O.K (The American School of Kinshasa), an extremely diverse private Christian school in the Congo. I vividly remember that Friday afternoon in the men’s locker room after the basketball team had finished practice my friend Jeremy coming up to me with a big smile on his face. He said something along the lines of “James check this out!” He pulled out his new Nokia that he had received as a gift from his parents for his birthday. I remember looking at the screen of the phone and seeing a man and a woman having intercourse and staying in the locker room with the entire basketball team for next thirty minutes. There were lots of fist bumps and laughter as we were all exposed to this simple tape that was part of a multi-billion dollar entertainment industry. According to...

...The prevailing sense of exigency in the impunity issue and the anticipation of an increase in the number of journalists being killed over the years are bare bones of the unfortunate development happening in the media sector. Tracing back in history, press freedom and other democratic institutions were legitimately re-established after the ouster of Marcos repression in 1986, yet Filipino journalists continue to get killed for their work. The persistence of the killings has been attributed to a culture of impunity, in which the killers and the masterminds have mostly prevaricated prosecution in a damaged justice system. Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility Press Alerts Officer and Journalism graduate from the UP College of Mass Communication Melanie Pinlac said that the continuing murder of Filipino journalists and media practitioners indicates how much the culture of impunity in the Philippines has flourished, one more result of the systemic weaknesses of the country’s justice system. The government’s lack of political will, incompetent law enforcement, prosecutors laden with impossible case loads, the primeval condition of forensic investigation and the poorly-funded witness protection program are accountable for the culture of impunity. If bullets are fired against journalists, and the government fails to sufficiently respond, then that country’s promise of democracy is gravely in uncertainty. This speaks about the omnipresent issue...

...COPD COPD is a term used for Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. This is an “obstructive disease”, meaning that airflow coming out of the lungs during exhalation is blocked. The blockage of airflow with COPD ,makes it very difficult for a person to breathe. Over time, COPD get progressively worse because doctors have not yet found a cure. COPD affects more Than 5% of the adult population, and is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States and worldwide. 4 With COPD, a person will usually have two main medical conditions that limit airflow. These conditions are known as emphysema and chronic obstructive bronchitis. Emphysema causes the elasticity of the lung tissue to be lost. The alveolar walls between air sacs in the lung are damaged, and this causes them to lose their shape and become flimsy. Over time, this damage destroys the walls, leading to fewer, larger air sacs, rather than many, smaller air sacs like that of a normal lung. When this happens, the amount of surface available for gas exchange inside the lung is drastically reduced. With chronic bronchitis, the lining of the airways is constantly irritated and inflamed. This condition causes the lining to thicken, and leads to a lot of thick mucus production forming in the airways, making it harder to breathe. With destruction of the lung parenchymal, and narrowing of the small airways, air becomes trapped due to the inability of the airways to remain open during expiration...

It has therefore become imperative that proper measures should be put in place to ensure that no student signs for another. It has been observed that at Christian Service University College lecturers sometimes give the attendance book to students to sign without actually supervising them to see whether the right student is signing or making sure that no student signs for another. Moreover, if a lecturer wants to supervise the signing of the attendance book to make sure that the right student is signing and no student signs for a friend then the lecturer may end up by wasting a significant amount of the lecture period on the signing supervision. Furthermore, in the larger classes lecturers sometimes use their own ideology and principles to award the attendance...

...VASILEIOS-MARIOS GKORTSAS vasilisg@mit.edu 6.638 Term Paper Attosecond Pulse Generation Abstract: The word “attosecond” (1 as = 10-18 sec) entered the vocabulary of physics when sub-femtosecond pulses of UV/XUV light were established. High harmonic generation (HHG) is currently the only experimentally proven method for generating attosecond pulses. Attosecond science has opened the door to real-time observation and time-domain control of atomic-scale electron dynamics. In this work, we review the essentials of the generation of attosecond pulses and we mention the applications of attosecond science in the control of electronic motion. 1. Introduction The need for finer time resolution and the quest for higher peak power explain the continuous trend towards shorter laser pulses since the invention of the laser. The historical progress of ultra-short technology is summarized in Figure 1. The first pulse lasers had duration of several hundreds of microseconds. The invention of Q-switching (Hellwarth, 1961) reduced the pulse length to 10 ns (four orders of magnitude decrease). The invention of laser mode locking (DiDomenico, 1964; Hargrove et al., 1964; Siegman, 1970) accompanied by broad gain laser media (Shank and Ippen 1974) further reduced the duration to less than 1 ps (another four orders of magnitude decrease). The ring cavity with intra-cavity prism compensation of the group velocity dispersion produced pulses of 6 fs (Fork et al, 1987)...
