November 26, 2014 The title of this article is Exploring the Impact of Police Officer Educational Level on Allegations of Police Misconduct. This article was written and conducted by Jennifer Manis, Carol A. Archbold and Kimberly D. Hassell. The point of this article was for these three individuals to conduct a theory about officers and the amount of training they endured prior to being sworn in as police officers. After they conducted this theory they wanted to get their entire hypothesis and opinions together to examine the relationship between police officers’ and their education levels, the types of degrees they had, and formal and informal complaints that may have been filed against patrol officers. They believed that by increasing formal education standards and improving the quality of training, policing would become more professional and less charges and complaints would be filed against officers. As we all know this is not a good look for the police force. People rely on police officers for safety; the last thing they want to have to endure is negative behaviors from the people who are supposed to serve and protect. As police officers they have to always remember no matter what they are doing; regardless if good or bad, someone is always watching and will always have an opinion on their actions. Police officers have to lead by examples. The question at hand is simple does a four year degree or more education make a police force more successful with less complaints? According to the article, there are not any statistical differences between patrol officers with degrees in criminal justice versus patrol officers without degrees in criminal justice. Regardless of the amount of complaints that are filed it honestly has nothing to do with the amount of years one may have spent in school. Because the way I perceive it, it does not matter how much someone may know about the law and how one should abide by it, they will always conduct their selves in a manner they think would be appropriate. Regardless of the degree, there will always be someone who will abuse their power and authority before someone with little to no education will. Simply because that is the conscious decision they chose to make….yes, we all know it does not make it right. The research method that is used within the article is quantitative. I chose quantitative as the research method over qualitative because within the article they are mostly discussing numbers and the amount of complaints that were filed formally and informally. Although I stated my opinion about officers having an education and degrees in criminal justice the article contradicts it and states the conclusion that police officers with a college education are less likely to have any type of complaints filed against them compared to police officers with merely a high-school education. There is no way you can be a police officers and effectively carry out your job duties if you do not have any knowledge as to how things will operate; however I still stand firm on my opinion of an degree not being the only way to ensure police officers with degrees will have less complaints than others. Without a doubt more research will be needed to distinguish between the two in order to further evaluate the relationship between police officers education, law enforcement experience and the amount of complaints of police misconduct.
