Unit 5: Journal
In most cartoons from the Golden Age of American Animation, characters tend to stay the same with each new cartoon (no lessons are learned, no knowledge or plot lines are carried on to the next cartoon.) However, the locations are often wildly different. With each new short, Bugs Bunny might be in the Wild West, in the midsts of a Wagnerian opera-land, or in outer space.

Using for reference the last three episodes you have viewed from your chosen tv series, do the characters change and grow, or do they stay the same between episodes? Are there reoccurring locations, or is there a new setting for the show each week? If your show is different in these ways from Golden Age cartoons, why do you think that is?

In the last three episodes of my tv show, Scooby-Doo, the characters don’t change or grow in their characters but they do become more eager and impatient in finding more mysteries and getting them solved. For example, in one of the episodes Velma, Daphne, Fred, Shaggy and Scooby-Doo are all sitting around Fred’s house bored and ready for another mystery to land in their hands. Velma says “I’m so bored, we haven’t had a good mystery in I don’t know when.” This is usually the case in most episodes. The gang is anxiously waiting for another mystery to solve when one comes straight into their hands.
In these episodes each mystery is occurring in different locations. One is occurring in Gatorsburg, the second in their hometown, and another on the beach. I don’t think the show I’m watching is that much different than ones from the Golden Age because they both have a somewhat violent context to the episodes. Some of the episodes in the Golden Age involve two characters arguing or fighting to get something they want. I think it’s the same in this tv show because the gang are opposing someone else and solving the mystery in order to get the peace they want in the city.

Animation director Chuck Jones once called “Crusader Rabbit” and “Rocky and Friends” cartoons "illustrated radio" because the characters talked so much and moved so little. He compared this to his own animation, in which he tries to make the actions clear, so that you could understand what is going on even if the volume is turned down. How does the animation in your chosen TV show compare with the early television animation we viewed in this week’s lecture? Is your TV show fully animated or is the animation limited? If the dialogue was removed in you tv show, would the animation make any sense? Does it matter to you if the animation makes sense without sound? Why or why not?

Comparing with the early television animation we viewed this week I think my tv show, Scooby-Doo, is different than the early tv animation in that there is more action and the characters move and interact rather than have a series of frames of still pictures and have narration in the background. My television show is fully animation since all the characters move around and there is a lot of action going on with a lot of dialogue and interacting.
If the dialogue was removed from the tv show of Scooby-Doo I think it would make a difference and any sense depending on the person watching the show. Personally, I think it would make the biggest difference having the dialogue on the show but the show can make a bit of sense without the sounds. I think it matters if the animation makes sense without the sounds because it shows how well the show is made so that even if for some reason there isn’t any available sound the audience can still enjoy the show and sort of understand what is going on due to the amount of movement and action that takes place on the show.
