Tough Living In the short story ‘’the necklace’’ was a very tough, sad, and stupid It was about jealousy and envy. Among the greatest sins and have been down fall of many. The story is about Mathilde Loisel that seeks money and desires of becoming into the upper class. All the ambition of becoming in the high class she brings herself into her downfall. She hated her living society. In the story she marries a rich man that his profession is a clerk. Loisel is beautiful and charming woman. The clerk who she married he works in the ministry of education. These man during the time of the story he can afford anything, provide her only with a modest though not uncomfortable lifestyle. Later in the story she got invited to a big society party all thanks to her husband. The party was hosted by the ministry of education the place where her husband works. He hope that Malthilde will be thrilled with the chance to attend an event this sort. Later she receive these news she started to cry all because she did not have a nice dress to wear for the party, he got mad and gave her money to buy a dress. Afterwards she wanted a necklace to go with the dress she got and went to a lady named Forestier to get a necklace from her she accepts and lends the jewelry to Malthilde. In the party she was excited because every man notice her cause she looked beautiful. The party ended late they walk down the streets to catch a cab, when they got home she noticed the necklace she had was gone. She lost the necklace that miss Forestier lend her, few days pass she find a different necklace that looks similar the necklace that Forestier lend her and her husband went bankrupt to able to pay the debt that his wife made all because she wanted to go that high class society party. Both worked hard to able to pay their debts. Ten years later Malthilde finds Miss Forestier, but she didn’t recognize her in the beginning until her introduced herself in the end Miss Forestier clasps her hands and tells her the original necklace was just a custom jewelry and not worth anything.

Justice
This story I going to write is on Ha-Jin Saboteur. This story I liked because it got my attention, due to it can happen in reality. The main character is named Mr. Chiu. The story starts him and his wife eating food in a restaurant. The plot of this story is going to be is when Mr. Chiu goes to prison something that he did not do. The cost to release him was to accept his fault. Another thing I think the reason that Ha-Jin wrote this maybe it happen to him, or knows someone that have been in the situation.
Back to saboteur, we know that police officers abuse their power to fuck up other people lives. The story was well tell, but I don’t think is right if you’re an officer if you don’t like someone you need to arrest that person and take him to jail. Lastly, the funny thing in the story ends that 800 people contracted acute hepatitis, and six of them died and two out of the six victims were children. All happen because Mr. Chiu got arrested for being prejudice.

This story was very interest at first I did not understand what was about. Later I read it again I got one part and I came up with the word abortion.
The story I’m talking about is from the author Hemingway, ‘’ hills like white elephants’’.
The story takes place at a train station in the Ebro River the valley of Spain. This particular scene is oppressively hot and dry. The scenery of the valley is barren and ugly for the most of the part. There are two main protagonist is a men, and female while their waiting in the train station to go to Madrid, the American and the girl with him drinking beer in a liquor called Aris del Toro.
Which the girl shares the difference of liquor ice. Their conversation is mundane at first, but quickly drifts the subject of an operation which the American is attempting to convince the girl undergo. In other words try to convince her not to abort the baby. That is all this story is about.

The fourth story I so far I choose ‘’ the things they carried’’. The author of this story is Tim O Brien. Most of the stories are told from first person, but on several occasion, O Brien he uses the third either a distancing tactic or a chance to let one his platoon-mates such as Mitchell sanders or Rat Kiley, to tell his story.
The introspective memory story and a self-conscious examination of the methods and the reason behind the storyline. The narrator is unreliable for example; he speaks of the necessity of blurring truth and fiction in a true war story. The things I gotten confused when the narrator keeps changes the time frame. It goes to the war and then switches back to the present. I did not like this story at all.

These journal is going about to a famous well known author in the English literature. I’m talking about William Shakespeare. Hamlet is without the most famous play in the English language. The story was written in the early 1600’s. The playwright achieved artistic maturity in this work through his brilliant depiction of the hero’s struggle with two opposing forces: in the moral integrity and need to avenge his father murder. William focus on this revolutionary from the contemporary revenge tragedies, which tended to graphically dramatize violent acts on stage, in that it emphasized the hero problem rather than the depiction of bloody deeds.

In other words like Ernest Johnson, “the dilemma of Hamlet the Prince and Man” is “to unscramble himself from the temptation to cause justice for the wrong reasons and in evil passion, and to do what he must do at last for the pure sake of justice.… From that dilemma of wrong feelings and right actions, he ultimately emerges, solving the problem by attaining a proper state of mind.” Hamlet endures as the object of universal identification because his central moral dilemma transcends the Elizabethan period, making him a man for all ages. In his difficult struggle to somehow act within a corrupt world and yet maintain his moral integrity, Hamlet ultimately reflects the fate of all human beings.

This time I use in this journal is ‘’ everyday use’’.
The mother decides that she will wait in the yard for her daughter Dee’s arrival. Mother knows that her other daughter, Maggie, will be nervous throughout Dee’s stay, self-conscious of her scars and burn marks and jealous of Dee’s much easier life. Mother fantasizes about reunion scenes on television programs in which a successful daughter embraces the parents who have made her success possible. Sometimes my mother pictures bring together with Dee in a similar scenario, in a television studio where an amiable host brings out a tearful Dee, who pins orchids on Mother’s dress. Whereas Mama is ashamed about the thought of looking a white man in the eye, Dee is more self-confident. Mom’s thinking is interrupted by Maggie’s shuffling arrival in the yard. My mom remembers the house on fire that happened more than a decade ago, when she carried Maggie, badly burned, out of the house.
Secondly, in the story there was one quote ‘’ have you ever seen a lame animal, perhaps a dog run over by some careless person rich enough to own a car, sidle up to someone who is ignorant enough to be kind to him? This is the way my Maggie walks. She knows she is not the bright one. Like good looks and money, quickness passes her by.
My mom tells these words as Maggie joins her in the yard to wait for Dee. In this quote she symbolizes Maggie as a pathetic figure who shows the effects of her shielded life and scar. Maggie’s crushed spirit and withering, withdrawn nature disappoint Mama, but she ultimately chooses Maggie’s comfort and faithfulness over Dee’s low selfishness. My mom feels that she is the protector of one daughter and the victim of the other. She dreams of the future marriage that will relieve her of the burden of Maggie and leave her to a quiet life. On one hand, Mom’s brutal honesty and lack of illusions seem closely connected to her strength. At the same time, Mom’s honesty is also harsh. It dramatizes the delicate yet deep gulf that exists between Mother and her daughters. Whereas Dee represents a world of extreme change, Maggie relentlessly stays the same, an all-too-present reminder of the inequities of the past and present.

This sonnet, one of Shakespeare’s most famous, plays an elaborate joke on the conventions of love poetry common to Shakespeare’s day, and it is so well-conceived that the joke remains funny today. Most sonnet sequences in Elizabethan England were modeled after that of Petrarch. Petrarch’s famous sonnet sequence was written as a series of love poems to an idealized and idolized mistress named Laura. In the sonnets, Petrarch praises her beauty, her worth, and her perfection using an extraordinary variety of metaphors based largely on natural beauties. In Shakespeare’s day, these metaphors had already become cliché (as, indeed, they still are today), but they were still the accepted technique for writing love poetry. The result was that poems tended to make highly idealizing comparisons between nature and the poets’ lover that were, if taken literally, completely ridiculous.
The rhetorical structure of Sonnet 130 is important to its effect. In the first quatrain, the speaker spends one line on each comparison between his mistress and something else (the sun, coral, snow, and wires—the one positive thing in the whole poem some part of his mistress is like. In the second and third quatrains, he expands the descriptions to occupy two lines each, so that roses/cheeks, perfume/breath, music/voice, and goddess/mistress each receive a pair of unrhymed lines. This creates the effect of an expanding and developing argument, and neatly prevents the poem—which does, after all, rely on a single kind of joke for its first twelve lines—from becoming stagnant.

In the eighth journal I decided to do it on a Hispanic author Gabriel Garcia Marquez.
His story is ‘’ A very old man with Enormous wings’’.
One day, while killing crabs during a rainstorm that has lasted for several days, Pelayo discovers a homeless, disoriented old man in his courtyard who happens to have very large wings. The old man is filthy and apparently senile, and speaks an unintelligible language. After consulting a neighbor woman, Pelayo and his wife, Elisenda, conclude that the old man must be an angel who had tried to come and take their sick child to heaven. The neighbor woman tells Pelayo that he should club the angel to death, but Pelayo and Elisenda take pity on their visitor, especially after their child recovers. Pelayo and Elisenda keep the old man in their chicken coop, and he soon begins to attract crowds of curious visitors. Father Gonzaga, the local priest, tells the people that the old man is probably not an angel because he is shabby and doesn’t speak Spanish. Father Gonzaga decides to ask his bishop for guidance. Despite Father Gonzaga’s efforts, word of the old man’s existence soon spreads, and pilgrims come from all over to seek advice and healing from him. One woman comes because she been counting her heartbeats since childhood and couldn’t continue counting. An insomniac visits because he claims that the stars in the night sky are too noisy. The crowd eventually grows so large and disorderly with the sick and curious that Elisenda begins to charge admission. For the most part, the old man ignores the people, even when they pluck his feathers and throw stones at him to make him stand up. He becomes enraged, however, when the visitors sear him with a branding iron to see whether he’s still alive. Father Gonzaga does his best to restrain the crowd, even as he waits for the Church’s opinion on the old man. The crowd starts to disperse when a traveling freak show arrives in the village. People flock to hear the story of the so-called spider woman, a woman who’d been transformed into a giant tarantula with the head of a woman after she violated her parents. The sad tale of the spider woman is so popular that people quickly forget the old man, who performed only a few pointless semi miracles for his pilgrims. Pelayo and Elisenda have nevertheless grown quite wealthy from the admission fees Elisenda had charged. Pelayo quits his job and builds a new, larger house. The old man continues to stay with them, still in the chicken coop, for several years, as the little boy grows older. When the chicken coop eventually collapses, the old man moves into the adjacent shed, but he often wanders from room to room inside the house, much to Elisenda’s annoyance. Just when Pelayo and Elisenda are convinced that the old man will soon die, he begins to regain his strength. His feathers grow back and he begins to sing sea chanteys to himself at night. One day the old man stretches his wings and takes off into the air, and Elisenda watches him disappear over the horizon.

The ninth journal is going to Sophocles ‘’Oedipus the king.’’ The story is about; To Laius, King of Thebes, a prophecy foreseen that a child born to him by his queen Jocasta would slay his father and married his mother. So when in time a son was born the child's feet were engaged together and he was left to die on Mount Cithaeron. But a shepherd found the baby and be likely to him, and delivered him to another shepherd who took him to his master, the King or Corinth. Polybus being childless adopted the boy, who grew up believing that he was indeed the King's son. Afterwards doubting his parentage he inquired of the Delphic god and heard himself the weird declared before to Laius. Wherefore he fled from what he thought his father's house and in his flight he encountered and unenthusiastically slew his father Laius. Arriving at Thebes he answered the riddle of the Sphinx and the grateful Thebans made their deliverer king. So he reigned in the room of Laius, and espoused the widowed queen. Children were born to them and Thebes prospered under his rule, but again a serious plague fell upon the city. Again the prophecy was consulted and it attempted them purge themselves of blood-guiltiness. Oedipus denounces the crime of which he is unaware, and undertakes to track out the criminal. Step by step it is brought home to him that he is the man. The closing scene reveals Jocasta slain by her own hand and Oedipus blinded by his own act and praying for death or exile.

Finally, the last journal I’m going to do it on “Metaphors”.
I’m a riddle in nine syllables, Plath sets up the riddle poem concept, not only by using 9 lines for the nine month s of pregnancy, but by the woman describing herself as nine syllables. What do syllables make? Put them together and they make a word, which the woman will complete. In Biblical terms, the Word is made flesh. Metaphors that Describes a Pregnant Woman.
An elephant, a ponderous house. On the surface, these are descriptive of how a child-burdened woman might see herself. However, there are other connotations. Elephants have very long gestation periods. This woman’s pregnancy may feel endless. Later, Plath relates the taking of ivory from the elephant. A house, of course, is not just a large item, but a family container. There is also the Biblical connotation of the body as “house of the soul.” A melon, strolling on two tendrils. This delightful analogy should get a chuckle, but there could be an implication that the expectant woman has become the very “fruit of the womb.” The baby has taken over her life.
Metaphors can describe an Unborn Child
O red fruit, ivory, fine timbers! Clap, clap, and clap! One after the other, Plath creates new and profound metaphors as extensions of her previous ones. This time the baby is addressed ... and with O, as one might address a god or goddess. Each self- image of the pregnant woman has a correlation with the child. The melon is internally a red (common color for new-born babies) fruit; the elephant’s body will be plundered for the only thing that it has of importance –its ivory; the house is nothing without the intrinsic fine timbers from which it is constructed.
This loaf’s big with its yeasty rising. The obvious reference is to the rising of the yeasted loaf so that it overtops the baking pan. There is also the pun on a familiar disparaging reference to pregnancy as a “bun in the over.” A more weighty reference is to bread as the staff of life and to the Biblical allusion that the Kingdom of God is like leaven that infuses itself throughout the entire loaf. Analogy Depicts the Mother-Child Relationship. Money’s new-minted in this fat purse.
There are so many allusions in this simple line. Plath rings the changes. Minting is the process of making something valuable from base metal. Everyone likes fresh shiny new coins. Coins are passed around. Coins have images stamped on them. There is the paradox that coins are normally placed in a purse, not minted within it. A fat purse is a prize for pickpockets. The term purse usually stands for what is inside it. It has no great value in itself, but contains great value.
I’m a mean, a stage, a cow in calf
Here, the persona explores her ignominious position in relation to the child she is producing. The child is center-stage, while the mother is just the stage, the boards on which the action will be played out. Thus, the woman is a means to an end, just as the breeding cow is valued for the calves she can produce. I’ve eaten a bag of green apples
So much can be made of this. Initially, the sense of distension one might feel after eating an entire bag of apples is apparent. Consider also the qualification that the apples are green. Green fruit is sour. It can also mean unripe fruit, which is notorious for giving the consumer violent pains in the belly. Plath’s Allusion to Eve and the Apple and Original Sin However, there are richer meanings than that: it is hard to escape the Biblical allusion to the first woman, Eve. The unspecified fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good or evil that Eve was tempted to eat by the Devil has traditionally been depicted as an apple. Eve was severely punished for eating just one apple – the persona feels sure she must have eaten the whole bagful!
Most significantly of all, the apple reminds the reader of the Biblical consequence of Eve’s origin sin: God punished Eve with the travail of childbirth. “Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children.” (Genesis 3: 16)
A Pregnancy Poem for Mothers. Boarded the train there’s no getting off
The train the woman can’t get off is not pregnancy per se, but the irreversible birth process that the griping pains of consuming unripe apples suggest. The train “is due”, just as she is. Nothing will stop the train until it arrives at its destination and the baby is delivered. In a world where here is usually a “fix” for everything, where freewill is paramount, the woman has no choice but to deliver her body to this process she cannot control.
As such, Plath’s poem is not a bitter whinge about her own condition, but a pregnancy poem that can be offered to all mothers as their great day approaches. Plath empathizes with many of the conflicting emotions that most expectant mothers will have. The poem is a giant metaphor, the title is a metaphor in itself, the structure is another and every phrase used is yet another.
