Journey to IBA A wise man once told, “The more difficult it is to reach your destination, the more you will remember the journey” and for a destination as outstanding as IBA, the journey is as unforgettable as it can get. However rocky and bumpy the path may be, if it leads to something astounding it is worth the ride. The journey to IBA is somewhat similar. It can push to your breaking point, make you doubt your own abilities at times and crack under pressure too but the thought of finally procuring it keeps you from giving up, helps you getting yourself together again and lets you go on with it. In the end, when you reach where you were aspiring to be, all those hardships that you went through become the rising action of your epic story that you later share with others being the protagonist.
Institute of business administration of Dhaka University is the leading business school of Bangladesh par excellence. My desire of being part of this peerless institution started with my eldest sister’s dream of getting into IBA. I was an eighth-grader back then. She used to go into raptures talking about IBA and of how splendid the campus, the faculty and the education there are which also sparked something in me. She worked her fingers to the bone but alas, she wasn’t shortlisted. This setback had distressed my sister as well as our family severely because we were all holding onto the hope of her selection. It took all of us a while to recover from the despair. The dream had been then passed on to sibling to sibling but unfortunately it resulted in our parents’ disappointment only. However, as the superstitious phrase goes “Third time's the charm", it was the same for us three sisters. I was the last in our family to try for IBA and the first to get through to IBA. So I have my family to thank for the inspiration and motivation.
By the grace of God, my Ordinary level result was up to the mark although my Advanced level result wasn’t. Though the substandard and mediocre grades fairly caused a body blow to my parents yet they didn’t lose faith in me. It was I who thought of myself as an incompetent failure and that I was utterly incapable of getting into Bangladesh’s renowned universities. So I was willing to try out for the admission tests of private universities. But my mother’s speech of exhortation attempting to instill enthusiasm and determination in my inner self restored the belief in my potential. So the lack of self-confidence and being sidetracked phase was quick to fade away and I was back to my ultimate road to IBA.
After my Advanced level completion, I spent roughly ten months to gear up for my entrance exam which is a long period of time but I really wanted myself to be up for it to a fare-thee-well. I used to skim through the books at first to get an idea of the exam paper’s structure before I went for a course in an admission and standardized test preparation center which has a reputation of counselling their students substantially for IBA’s entrance exam. The instructors aided me in plenty different ways. With the ongoing classes, I came to know that my intimate paternal uncle was no more. We were all devastated to hear this terrible and appalling news. I went to my hometown along with my family for his funeral and to be there for his family while they mourn his sudden departure. This upsetting ordeal had hampered my studies a lot since we were away for a long time. I had missed a deal of my classes and it took me quite some time to cover for the damage done to my learning. I had to work twice as hard due to the pile-up of studies, but somehow I managed.
After months of classes, came the mock examinations which seemed extremely challenging for me to excel at. I could hardly keep track of time or answer the optimum number of multiple choice questions in each of the three sections along with the written part. This on top of the fact that all of my academic peers were performing exceptionally well demoralized me and knocked me sideways. Nevertheless, it also urged me to put more effort into giving my best shot. Days went by like paper in the wind and before I could even fully prepare myself, the actual exam was knocking on my door.
The day had finally arrived which was going to shape the rest of my life. I tried to keep myself calm and composed as much as I could before the examination. In spite of that, deep down inside of me, I was overly jittery. As the prime time approached, the knots in my stomach started to tighten. The two hours in the examination hall were the most crucial period of my life. That was when I could truly comprehend what Einstein conveyed with his theory of relativity. I inferred that when you attend a tedious class, a second seems like an hour however, in the same room if you sit for an examination of paramount importance an hour seems like a second. The fear of not being able to reach the marginal number of questions answered on time had me making blunders. I was very tentative doing the mathematics section and the uncertainty amplified after the exam as I overthought about every seeming mistake that I might have made. I came out of the exam hall with a heavy heart being dubious of my chances of getting into IBA.
The days between the exam and the result were the hardest of all. It got me worked up over what I should have studied more when I had the chance, what I should have answered instead during the exam and all other sort of regrets. The moment of truth was nearing rapidly; and in a flash, the notice that I was dreading most then had been published online. I was gushing with intense apprehension and behaving like a cat on a hot tin roof. Every click ran chills down my spine. Despite of the pessimism, there was a part of me that believed I would get in. Thoroughly going through the list of roll numbers that belonged to the selected candidates, my gaze stood still at my own roll number. I was both flabbergasted and overjoyed. I double-checked it to be absolutely certain. The overwhelming exhilaration to give the news to everyone was tremendous. My euphoria had no bounds.
My journey still had another obstacle to overcome as the viva voce examination was yet to be held. I tried to bring down my elation since I didn’t want to jinx anything. Few of the seniors of IBA helped out by giving me a proper idea of the conventional questions usually asked, the dos and don’ts and every probable situation that I should anticipate. This had been the most consequential interview of my life and I had my heart in my mouth the whole time. Before it began, we all had to give a short piece of writing as well. As luck would have it, the members in my viva board were very affable and my communication assessment test went without a hitch. After stepping out, I chatted with a lot of my fellows about how their interviews were and learned that theirs went exceptionally well. Naturally, the beam in my face I had before vanished with the heart-rending hunch of not making it. Turning back after being so close to my goal would have crushed my spirit. The following days were filled with immense fright. Terror fell upon my bed and sleep no longer came after the depressing thoughts. This was it, the defining moment was here. I was over the moon when I gathered that I had been officially chosen to be a part of an institution as incredible as IBA. The rejoice after my triumph was immeasurable. At last, I made it.
The journey to IBA has taught me a lot of things. It has taught me to stop doubting and start improving myself. It has taught me to start looking onto the bright sides and avoid getting pulled into the dark. It has taught me to stop worrying about what could have or should have happened, to believe that every cloud has a silver lining and let the chips fall where they may. It has taught me that the obstructions which someone faces in their way will make them more determined to achieve their objectives and to win against all the odds. As the quote goes “Man needs his difficulties because they are necessary to enjoy success”. I was lucky enough to see my dream come true. Lesson is that anyone’s dream can come to reality if they have the courage to pursue them.

...It Page 1 of 3 Business Specialization decision at Sukkur IBA By Muhammad Rafique Lashari Life is a journey of decisions. At every stage from childhood to manhood, everyone makes and takes a large number of general and specific, and important and unimportant decisions. Consciously or unconsciously, everyone tries his or her best level to make a successful decision. Some decisions become successful and there is no doubt, the successful decisions bring satisfaction, and some not and they indeed bring regret. Later on, some feel the regret and some not, it is a human behavior. People spend a lot of resources and time to avoid from the regret because it brings many psychological diseases or disorders which take them away from their spiritual comfort or satisfaction. Some decisions are general and not critical, and too tied to future. For example: buying dresses, wearing cosmetic and playing games. Some decisions are specific, critical and too tied to future. For example: marriage decision, job career and specialization decisions. For specific decisions, specific decision inputs or bases are required to make them successful. Students, being younger, make more specific decisions than others. ...‘’Heal the past, live the present, and dream the future’’. I strongly believe that my past is responsible for what I am today, and my future depends on my today. What I’m today is a reflection of my past. How I get here is by pushing the fear boulder away little at time and having confidence in myself. I moved forward in faith. One thing one shouldn’t forget is to involve the Lord in their self-improvement. God is always there for us to turn our weakness into strength. My life is like a battle, what I get out of it depends on how I act in dire straits. In the journey of my life I had tackled many challenges to be where I am now. A glance to my past makes me a little nostalgic. When I was the student of AKHSS, it was my dream to do engineering from a highly prestigious university, GIKI. I strived hard to get there, but sometimes we are compelled to vary our goals due to unfavorable conditions and circumstances. Once I was afraid, although i enjoyed doing quite promising tasks and I was a very hard working student. I always loved to set goals and put my effort to attain them where GIKI topped the list. As getting into GIKI was the greatest aim at that time, I had to study really hard and worked conscientiously to get admission. I did my best but I was afraid of rejection. I was so afraid of being not able to get admitted. I did everything to satisfy myself on behalf of my own. Finally, I appeared in the entry test. When the result was announced, I was full of beans to know that...

...Austin Lawton 6/17/14 English 101 “Austin Lawton goes for the shot and hits. Oh no, he seems to be hurt. This is a horrific scene.” What if this is said? What if basketball isn’t there for me anymore? What will I fall back on? That is why I plan to get my degree in computer engineering. If basketball doesn’t work out, my fall back plan will be put to use using my degree. I’ve been around computers for as long as I can remember. My mom was a middle school principal so she was a little computer savvy. We had a computer and she used to put me on the internet and let me play games. When I got done playing the games I tended to roam around the computer. Not knowing that while I’m doing so it helped me get comfortable with a computer. I used to explore the settings, the internet, and almost any program my mom had on the computer. In elementary school I got enrolled in a summer program that was dealing with computers. We made PowerPoints, typed papers in Microsoft Word, and even searched the web. This is when I got interested in computers and felt like I knew everything I could about computers. Oh was I wrong, this was nothing but it was pretty impressive that a kid of my age was so advanced. My mom eventually got a new computer and needed help hooking it up. It was funny because she went to use the bathroom before we started. Me being impatient and curious, I wondered if I could hook it up by myself. So I tried and surprisingly I hooked the whole computer up before my mom could...

Islamic Revivalism Movement Towards the Establishment of Islamic Banking and Finance in Malaysia

...(Kepel, Gilles, Jihad: on the Trail of Political Islam, Harvard University Press, 2002) The emergence of the Islamic revivalist movements in Malaysia in 1970 was spawned by the global Islamic resurgence and internal fissures or cracks in the Malay Muslim community. There has been an intensification of Islamic activities since the 1970s which include the establishment of Islamic banking and finance. The process of Islamization in Malaysia started in line with the concept of Islam as Ad-deen, a way of life in this world and the Hereafter, every ibadah commanded by Allah S.W.T. is of benefit in this and the next world. Since the beginning Muslims are obligated to perform the Hajj pilgrimage. And Muslims have to find enough money for the journey to the Holy Land. To avoid riba' (usury) which is haram (forbidden) in Islam, Muslims resort to various traditional methods of saving. Of course, there are those who dispose their animals or inherited properties for cash to cover their Hajj expenses, a practice which ultimately imposes economic burden on themselves and their families while they are on the pilgrimage or when they return from the pilgrimage. Such practice also does not augur well for...

...explorers set sail to simply learn more about the world. Whatever their reasons though, the information gained during the Age of Exploration significantly helped in the advancement of geographic knowledge. Reasons for Exploration and Key Voyages Though the desire to simply explore the unknown and discover new knowledge is a typical human trait, the world's famous explorers often lacked the funding needed for a ship, supplies, and a crew to get underway on their journeys. As a result, many turned to their respective governments which had their own desires for the exploration of new areas. Many nations were looking for goods such as silver and gold but one of the biggest reasons for exploration was the desire to find a new route for the spice and silk trades. When the Ottoman Empire took control of Constantinople in 1453, it blocked European access to the area, severely limiting trade. In addition, it also blocked access to North Africa and the Red Sea -- two very important trade routes to the Far East. The first of the journeys associated with the Age of Discovery were conducted by the Portuguese under Prince Henry the Navigator. These voyages were different than those previously conducted by the Portuguese because they covered a much larger area. Earlier sailors relied on portolan charts which are maps created for navigators based off of land features. Because these charts relied on the ability to see land, the voyages prior to those conducted by Prince Henry stayed along the coastlines...

Nothing Really

...Everyone makes mistakes, whether big or small. That’s why no one’s perfect. We all learn from something – by observing, listening, asking. Sometimes, we learn from others’s mistakes. But other times, we find ourselves confronted with the consequences brought about by our own mistakes. Whether done intentionally or unintentionally, mistakes are mistakes. And as we are human beings, we have no power to press rewind and do things over. It’s done, it’s there, we have to deal with it – that’s life. I would like to thank you because : For the new experiences and adventures we gained from traveling For the stories we shared simply because we needed someone to talk to, For the mistakes we made that got us into trouble but made us closer, For the disagreements that helped us accept each other for who we really are, For the laughter and smiles we shared, For the times we helped each other out, For the nights we watched movies or series together, For the pictures we took together… The past will always be a part of our lives we can’t control. It’s done. Whatever happened, happened. Whoever came and stayed, stayed; and the others, well maybe they just weren’t meant to make it to the present. But who knows about the future, right? I’ve realized not too long ago that I’ve been trapping myself in the past, comparing whatever happens to what already happened. And by doing so, I’ve unconsciously been restricting myself of enjoying what I have now. The habit to compare the past...

The policy makers, which comprise the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Ministry of Finance and related government and financial sector regulatory entities, have made several notable efforts to improve regulation in the sector. The sector now compares favorably with banking sectors in the region on metrics like growth, profitability and non-performing assets (NPAs). However, improved regulations, innovation, growth and value creation in the sector remains limited to a small part of it. The cost of banking intermediation in India is higher and bank penetration is far lower than in other markets. India’s banking industry needs to strengthen itself significantly In this paper, I have mainly focused on the overall analysis of the banking industry through framework like Porter’s five forces model. I have also concentrated upon the various developments being done in the industry along with recognizing the upcoming challenges as well as the opportunities to reap the profits even in troubled waters. Keywords: Indian banking industry, Porters five force model, market regulation. I. Introduction The Indian banking...
