Mangano was a divorced mother with three children in the early 1990s when she invented the Miracle Mop and became an overnight success, after which she patented many other products, often selling on the Home Shopping Network and QVC. The film is a semi-fictional and inspirational portrayal of how Mangano overcame personal and professional obstacles to rise to the top. In 1989, Joy Mangano is a divorced mother of three, working as a booking clerk for Eastern Airlines. She lives with her two young children, her mother, Terri, her grandmother, Mimi, and her ex-husband, Tony in Quogue, New York. Joy's older half-sister, Peggy, is an overachiever who constantly humiliates Joy in front of her children. Peggy and Joy's father Rudy are very close. Joy's mother encourages Joy to give up her dreams of becoming a successful inventor although her grandmother and her best friend Jackie believe she will pursue her ideas and become a strong successful woman.
After divorcing his third wife, Joy's father starts dating Trudy, a wealthy Italian widow with some business experience. While on Trudy's boat, Joy drops a glass of red wine, attempts to mop up the mess, and cuts her hands on the broken glass while wringing the mop. Joy returns home and creates blueprints for a self-wringing mop. She builds a prototype with help from the employees at her father's shop. She then convinces Trudy to invest in the product. Culture Difference on Film

...Yamei Chen 1/16/2012 The Joy Luck Club, I’ve watched that movie many times, when I was a lot younger and also recently, because of my age, what I’ve experienced in life, each time I viewed the movie, my mind set are different as well, yet everything I watch this movie it brings tears into my eyes. When I was younger viewing the movie, which was very close to reality to what actually happen to women in China in the time, I think now when I view the movie, I’ve missed the whole point of the movie, it was really describing the relationship between mother and daughter in different time zone and culture background. “As cultural institutions, mass media often reflect some aspects of the society in which they operate. The critically acclaimed film The Joy Luck Club (1993) reflects diaspora experiences of Chinese immigrant women and depicts intergenerational tensions between Chinese mothers and their American-born Chinese daughters. It also reflects the struggles, dilemmas, and conflicts in the search for identity and self-development among Chinese and Chinese American women.” (Yea-Wen, C. (2007). The storyline is centered upon Jing-Mei Woo also referred as June, who struggles to deal with the recent death of her mother Suyuan Woo, throughout the movie. The movie takes place at a reception held on June’s behalf before her trip to China to meet her twin half-sisters who were abandoned by their mother many years ago. June struggles with her mother’s past which she never fully understood...

The Joy Luck Club

...The Joy Luck Club “The Joy Luck Club” is a movie about women and about their pursuit of happiness. The film depicts the stories of four Chinese women who moved to the United States and their daughter who was born and grew up in America. This film introduced us to four different stories conflict between mother and daughter. In the film, every mother has a bygone age of marriage sorrow and the same result can be said with their daughters. In order to have the appearance of a good marriage, they have to endure their husbands, but with their mothers’ constant encouragement and help, they actively pursue and finally found the real happiness. It was an indefectible and unaffectedly moving film. The movie tells the story of their each mother and daughter’s life experience. Camera lenses constantly switch between the mothers’s past sufferings to the development of the daughters in the United States. Each of the internal relations about this movie’s plot is very real and true. The film’s depiction of old China is extremely explicit, it covers almost all the bad habits of the Old China. For example, marriage is built on the base of love, but there were a lot of belly pointed marriages in the ancient time. Of course, those were bad habits and ideas acquired in the old society and very far away from our present life. By contrast, the most unforgettable of the movie is the friction between the mother and their American-born daughters. The whole movie deeply discusses the Chinese way of...

...between races and ethnicities at all levels of society. This area encompasses racism, segregation, and other complex social processes between different racial and ethnic groups. The movie poster precisely portrays the idea and concept of the film. The door being guarded by the African American serious father, the bouquet of colorful flowers held by the white, Caucasian boyfriend, and the in love African-American daughter standing behind her boyfriend reflects one the most important details that illuminate in the movie poster. The daughter of the house brings her white, Caucasian boyfriend home to meet her parents on the occasion of her parents’ 25th wedding anniversary. Her father dislikes him almost immediately because of his race. The movie poster reflects how he is guarding and controlling the door of the house symbolizing how he doesn’t want his daughter’s boyfriend to enter and become part of the family nor part of his daughter’s life because he belongs to a different race. It seems that he believes that if the white, Caucasian man enters the house, he is approving an interracial relation between his daughter and her white boyfriend. While the Caucasian boyfriend is entering the house with his daughter, the father’s facial expression seems of mistrust towards the white boyfriend, while his daughter is full of joy and excitement. Back then, black race people where mistreated because racism was controlling the world. White people believed they...

American Hustle's Joy

...Joy is a more simpleminded and less ambitious work than writer/director David O. Russell’s last effort American Hustle, but that doesn’t mean that it’s a worse film. American Hustle was a slight, and kind of funny story that couldn’t really work because none of the world that it had built up seemed to be very authentic. It wasn’t the 70’s. It was a cheesy and stupid looking version of the 70’s that seemed boring in contrast to other films that had presented this period in time. Joy almost solves this problem by completely throwing out any type of outside existing world whatsoever. This does mean that it completely sacrifices any sense of weight or any really existence beyond its frames, but that’s not bad. The fact is Joy is a film chiefly...

Inside Out Movie Review

...Colegio de San Juan de Letran Niceforo Vince A. Balbedina III Midterm Requirement General Psychology Movie Reaction Write-up Disney’s Pixar’s Inside Out Born in the 21th century, I was blessed enough to grow up in the luxury that is modern animation in entertainment. I remember the first animated movie I saw was DreamWorks’ Prince of Egypt. From then on, my fascination over animation and cartoons ran like water. I was five years-old when my mother let me watch my first Pixar film which was “Toy Story”. From that moment on, Pixar never failed to fascinate me. Last Wednesday, cinemas nationwide premiered Pixar’s latest work, Inside Out. I already saw the movie trailer before I went to watch the movie itself. The movie teaser was very intriguing. In the 4 minute video, they showcased all of their classic movies and the emotions that they threw towards the audience. After the memory montage, they introduced five characters each symbolizing the five root emotions of man; Joy; shown as a yellow figure that resembles the shape of a star, Sadness; shown as a blue character that resembles the shape of a tear-drop, Anger; the red fellow in the shape of a box, Fear; the purple figure that resembles the shape of a question-mark & Disgust; shown as a green character that resembles the shape of a broccoli. The plot of the story was as simple as it was intricate. It was about the struggle of a young girl, named Riley Andersen, as her emotions meet a dilemma...

Even though entertainment is depicted as a menace to society it has its perks, such as bringing joy and happiness to the population and shedding awareness on serious matters all around the world. Many folks believe that entertainment has the ability to “ruin” society; however, entertainment is meant to bring joy and happiness to the population who watch or listen. Shane Meadows’ interpretation of the skinhead era in the 1980s does an exceptional job colliding a misfit youngster (Shaun Fields), and a gang of peaceful skinheads to help our protagonist find acceptance and happiness, after the tragedy of his father’s death - during the Falklands War. Meadows manages to capture all sorts of emotion during the movie, with some great actors and a well-thought musical atmosphere. With a mixture of the harsh ganglife and the difficulties of life. The settings/feelings of the movie becomes enhanced and more captivating, with all the elements Meadows chose to add to the movie. Even though the plot is great and captivating, I cannot help but feel that something is missing. I would have loved to see a bigger character development from the protagonist. At the end it feels like Shaun has not developed at all. The character...

Mary Poppins Analysis

...Bert sings: "Because I was afraid to speak/When I was just a lad/My father gave me nose a tweak/And told me I was bad/ But then one day I learned a word/That saved me achin' nose/The biggest word I ever heard/And this is how it goes, oh/ Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious." Bert explicitly says that, when he was young, he was a scared child who was afraid to speak and had an over-bearing father, until he – as a child – learned that magic word. It's a magical word that really only Mary Poppins knows or uses. There is really no way he could have learned it as a kid unless she taught it to him! In the movie Bert works as a one-man band, a sidewalk chalk artist, a super-chipper chimney sweep, and a kite salesman! The movie takes care to show how sucky all the jobs are, but no matter what, he manages to keep a smile on his face. It's as if someone taught him how to find the joy in hard work. Perhaps with a spoonful of sugar?! (Yes. The answer is yes.) In the very beginning, Bert predicts, "Wind's in the East/ Mist coming in/ like something is brewing/ about to begin./Can't put me finger/on what lies in store/ But I feel what's to happen all happened before." It seems vague, but really he's just being coy. It did all happen before, when Mary Poppins was HIS nanny. Bert NEVER questions Mary's magic not when she's flying, not when she's turning a cloud of smoke into a magic staircase and not even when she bends the laws of space, time, physics and reality to transport them to a...

Film Analysis of 3 Idiots and Societal Impacts on Individualism

...and fight just as his duty entailed him to and fight his loved ones. The dilemma that Arjuna experiences in the Bhagavad Gita is the same as the one many of the characters in 3 Idiots face. 3 Idiots is the perfect amalgamation of how dharma and izit affect one’s life in South Asia. Throughout the film, there were stories of characters facing the problem of being accepted in society as something other than what their parents wished them to be or do. 3 Idiots is a great movie that pushes the idea that duty and izit is not limited to family pressures or societal pressures, but also it pushes the idea that duty and izit can come from within and from individualism. The movie is a story of how three friends faced the major issues and problems with the education system in India and around the world. Three main characters: Rancho, Raju, and Farhan all coming from different backgrounds meet together as roommates at the Imperial College of Engineering. Rancho comes from a background of actually loving the joys of building machines. Raju comes from an impoverished background of suffering and depression. Farhan comes from a normal family, but he has been pressured by his father to become an engineer rather than becoming a photographer. All of the...
