Bongbong Marcos: My father's burial will bring closure for the country
(UPDATED) September this year may be the earliest date for the burial of the former president, but according to Bongbong Marcos, nothing is definite
MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – Senator Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr on Saturday, June 11, said the planned burial of his father, the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos Sr, in the Libingan ng mga Bayani (Heroes' Cemetery) will bring closure for the country.
"I think it will bring closure not only to my family but to the rest of the country. This is something that has been somehow in the consciousness of the Filipino people. This continuing partisan exchange that has been going over 30 years can finally be put to rest. I think that is the significance," Marcos said in a press conference on Saturday.
Marcos was in Davao City on Friday night, June 10, to visit President-elect Rodrigo Duterte and thank him personally for his plan to "arrange immediately" the burial of the older Marcos in the Libingan ng mga Bayani.
But the senator said no other specifics were discussed during his meeting with Duterte – not even the date of the burial.
"September 2016 ang lumabas na very early na nabanggit, baka September. But [there's] really nothing more definite, kahit September baka 'di pa ano 'yun," Marcos explained, saying the date would be something for his mother Imelda Marcos to decide.
(September 2016 was the earliest [date] mentioned, maybe September. But [there's] really nothing more definite, even September may not be final.)
Duterte first promised to give Marcos a hero's burial last February while campaigning in Ilocos Norte, home province of the Marcoses.
Earlier, Marcos said rules of the Armed Forces of the Philippines allow for the burial of his father's remains at the Heroes' Cemetery.
"A soldier who served, a veteran, has the rights to be interred at the Heroes' Cemetery; a president has the same rights," the senator said last February.
Duterte believes the move will "erase from our people one hatred."
On Saturday, Marcos' rival and Vice President-elect Leni Robredo said thousands of families who were victims of Martial Law have also been waiting 30 years for justice and closure.
"Lalong hindi tayo makakapag-move on kapag kinalimutan natin ang karahasan sa ating kasaysayan (We won't be able to move on if we forget the violence in our history)," she said in a statement. – Rappler.com

Bongbong: Hero's burial will bring closure

MANILA - (UPDATED) The only son and namesake of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos said Saturday his burial at the Heroes' Cemetery would bring "closure" to a decades-long political divide.
Senator Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr., who lost in his bid for the vice presidency in last month's elections, said he discussed the possible hero's burial with President-elect Rodrigo Duterte in Davao City.
"I quite disagree with it. It will bring closure not only to my family but the country somehow," he told reporters when asked if the move would divide the nation.
"This continuing partisan exchange that has been going on will finally be put to rest," he said.
A September burial at the Libingan ng nga Bayani was being considered, he said.
The late strongman's remains have been kept in a refrigerated crypt at the family's ancestral home in Ilocos Norte province since they returned to the country in 1991.
Marcos died while on exile in Hawaii in 1989, three years after a military-backed popular revolt ended a tumultuous two-decade-long rule.
The family and their associates are accused of amassing $10 billion from state coffers and a raft human rights violations involving thousands.
The younger Marcos' failure to capture the vice-presidency dealt a severe blow to the family's bid to reassert themselves on the national stage, according to analysts.

GMA Published June 11, 2016 3:17pm Bongbong: Hero’s burial for my father to bring closure, healing
A hero's burial for the late President Ferdinand Marcos would not only bring "closure" on the part his family but also healing to a divided nation, which he ruled with an iron fist for two decades, his son and namesake said Saturday.
At a press conference in Quezon City, defeated vice-presidential candidate Senator Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. thanked President-elect Rodrigo Duterte for allowing the remains of the late leader to be buried at the Libingan Ng Mga Bayani in Taguig City.
Bongbong paid a courtesy call on Duterte in Davao City on Friday night to discuss his father's burial and a possible Cabinet position in the coming administration.
"I think this will bring closure not only to my family but to the nation as well," the senator said when asked if Duterte's decision would divide the country.
"This continuing partisan exchange that has been going on for over 30 years can finally be put to rest and I think that's the significance of the statement of incoming president Duterte," he added.
Bongbong said the initial plan for the burial rites will be in September, the late strongman's birth month.
"That will be up to the family to decide and principally my mother (Ilocos Norte Rep. Imelda Marcos)," he said.
Duterte's consent has enraged the kin, friends and supporters of the victims of Martial Law, who have shown strong opposition to the burial and asked the new president to reconsider his decision.
The victims argued that burying the dictator at the Libingan ng mga Bayani would "whitewash all crimes he (Marcos Sr.)committed against the people and would send the wrong message to the world that in the Philippines, crime pays."
Also, the surviving victims said that the Marcos was a "phony wartime hero" as most of the 32 medals he supposedly accumulated during World War II were found to be a fraud by the United States Army in early 1986.
On the other hand, Vice President-elect Leni Robredo, who defeated Bongbong in last month's polls, said that Martial Law victims are also waiting to secure justice.

"Tatlong dekada na ring naghihintay ang libu-libong pamilya ng mga biktima ng Martial Law ng kanilang katarungan at closure," she said in a statement on Saturday.

"Lalong hindi tayo makakapag-move on kapag kinalimutan natin ang karahasan sa ating kasaysayan," she added.
Still, Duterte believes Marcos deserves a place at the Libingan Ng Mga Bayani because the former leader fought for the nation's freedom from Japanese colonizers in the 1940s.
The Libingan Ng Mga Bayani was established as a fitting resting place for Filipino military personnel—from privates to generals, as well as heroes and martyrs.
After WW II, Marcos entered politics and became a House lawmaker and later a senator before winning in 1965 the presidency, a post he held for two decades until he was ousted by the People Power uprising in February 1986.
Since his death as an exile on September 28, 1989 in Honolulu, Hawaii, his remains have been kept at the Marcos Mausoleum in the heart of Batac town in Ilocos Norte, his home province. - See more at: http://www.gmanetwork.com/news/story/569612/news/nation/bongbong-hero-s-burial-for-my-father-to-bring-closure-healing#sthash.5wjnS20S.dpuf

Bongbong: Hero’s burial for Pa will bring closure to Marcoses, PH
(Updated) Burying former president Ferdinand Marcos at the “Libingan ng mga Bayani” will bring closure to their family and the nation, his son and namesake said on Saturday.
Speaking to reporters, Sen. Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. said laying his father at the heroes’ cemetery would bring closure rather than division among Filipinos.
“I think it will bring closure not only to my family but to the rest of the country. This is something that has been somehow in the consciousness of the Filipino people. This continuing partisan exchange that has been going over 30 years can finally be put to rest. I think that is the significance,” Marcos said in a news briefing in Quezon City.
Marcos said he met on Friday night with President-elect Rodrigo Duterte to thank the incoming President for his plan to bury his father at the heroes’ cemetery.

“Ako’y pumunta roon kasi ito ang unang paggkakataon ko na personal na magpasalamat sa kanya sa kanyang mga statement, unang-una tungkol sa libing ng aking ama,” the outgoing senator said.
(I went there because it gave me the opportunity to personally thank him for his statements primarily regarding the burial of my father.)
Duterte earlier said that he would allow the burial of the late president at the Libingan ng mga Bayani to unite the nation, citing that the issue has been a “divisive factor in our society.”

During their meeting, Marcos said there were no specific details discussed regarding his father’s burial, including the date.
Reports said the late dictator could be buried at the heroes’ cemetery by Sepetmber 11, his birth anniversary, but the younger Marcos said no definite details have been discussed yet.
“Wala pang specifics na ganun (There are no details as specific as that),” he said referring to the date of his father’s burial.
“There’s really nothing more definite, kahit September baka ‘di pa ano ‘yun (even the month of September is not final yet),” he added.
Duterte earlier said that the burial of the late president Marcos could be “arranged immediately.”
“I will allow the burial of President Marcos sa Libingan ng mga Bayani not because he is a hero but because he was a Filipino soldier, period,” Duterte has said. RAM/IDL

Outgoing Senator Bongbong Marcos over the weekend said that his father, former President Ferdinand Marcos, will be laid to rest at the Libignan ng mga Bayani in September this year.
Marcos told reporter at the weekly news forum, Kapihan sa Annabel’s that the good news was assured to him by no less than President-elect Rodrigo Duterte.
Marcos met with Duterte Friday to asked him personally the wish of his family to laid the remains of the former strongman at the Libingan ng mga Bayani.
“We choose September 11 as the date of his burial for all you know that is his birthday,” the young Marcos said.
Duterte announced last May that he would make good on his campaign promise to bury the strongman at the Libingan Ng Mga Bayani.

The promise dismayed Martial Law victims, who asked Duterte to reconsider his position. The victims argued that burying the dictator at the Libingan would “whitewash all crimes he committed against the people and will send the wrong message to the world that in the Philippines, crime pays.”
The victims added that the elder Marcos was a “phony wartime hero” as most of the 32 medals he accumulated during World War II were found to be fraudulent by the United States Army in early 1986.
Asked by reporters the possibility of giving him cabinet post after a year ban, Marcos said there were no assurance but claimed he “cannot say no to the President” if offered.
According to Marcos, he and Duterte had discussed, “a little bit,” but refused to elaborate the details..
The senator insinuated that he can take a Cabinet post after the one-year ban if he is given the opportunity to serve in Duterte administration.
The senator ran for the vice-presidency as an independent candidate during the May elections, but lost to Liberal Party candidate and Camarines Sur Rep. Leni Robredo.
