...zPHILIPPINE SOCIETY AND CULTURE DE GUZMAN, ALYESKA CHLOE M. 2BSBA1 LOPEZ MUSEUM ““It’s Complicated”, a phrase popularized by social media, has become the catch all for all undefined and problematic relationships typical of the post-modern world. Seeing parallels between these and the complex relationship of the Philippines with its colonial pasts, the Lopez Museum and Library, in partnership with Tin-aw Art Gallery, opens its first exhibit for the year, Complicated on February 21, 2014 featuring commissioned works by guest artists Mike Adrao, Leslie de Chavez, and Ea Torrado, juxtaposed with works by Juan Luna, Felix Resurreccion Hidalgo, Juvenal Sanso, Bencab, Ang Kiukok, Jerry Elizalde Navarro and other artworks from the Lopez Museum collection.” I would like to admit now that I've never really had this kind of museum experience before. Usually, taking tours in a museum is kind of boring because I would only read the overview texts and go around the museum by myself. But, Lopez library was different and unique. I appreciate how they uncomplicated the “Complicated exhibit”. As we enter the museum, the very first things that I noticed are the paintings. Most of these paintings were nonfigurative. Good thing the tour guide explained each of these paintings. These artworks show us the creativity of Filipino and we can also see the life of the Filipino have in the Philippines as every point of it tells history. To conclude, I was brought into a magical...

...Journal Entry HIS/110 The Spanish migration to North America was an interesting topic in this week that piqued my interest. Learning more about this topic in the second chapter of US History through 1877 was a good starting point to keep my attention because it is something that I have been fascinated with beforehand. I used the artwork from this chapter because it is beautiful and seems to tell an excellent story of migration and the survival skills that were needed in this day in age. I researched more about the Spanish conquistador and was able to read on "Came Men on Horses: The Conquistador Expeditions of Francisco Vazquez de Coronado and Don Juan de Onate". This book speaks of any myths that may have been written or spoken of about the way the conquest of America. The Spanish was the first Europeans to enter the America Southwest. Stories about the city of Gold is what lured in a lot of people in hopes of riches. The conquistadors were fighting the decision to search for the city of gold or not. They did not want to have the burden on their shoulders of not attempting to search for it, and someone else find it if it deemed to be true. There were seven cities that were expected to contain gold for the conquistadors to search out. The conquistadors depended on navigation when it came to their needs of survival. This would be of great service to them when it comes to finding their way to their destination...

She reached Cantonment Leavenworth on May 1st and the company's Fort Tecumseh (later Fort Pierre, and now the vicinity of Pierre, South Dakota) on June 19, before being stopped by low water. Disappointed, Chouteau realized that they could not reach Fort Union that season, and resigned to try again next year, starting earlier to take advantage of the spring rise. They set out downriver for St. Louis on the last day of June and arrived there within ten days. Chouteau's consolation, quickly recognized by newspapers all over the United States and by Jacob Astor himself, was that he had taken a steamboat higher up the Missouri River than anyone had done before. Between Fort Leavenworth and the mouth of the Platte, the Yellowstone Encountered its first problem with low water. For the next five days the pilot and his steersman went out in the yawl to sound the river bottom for navigable...

...Eva Peron Who would you say has made a big impact on the world? The first person that comes to my mind is Eva Peron. Evita they call her, it’s amazing who she turned out to be. She started from nothing, but became someone Argentina would never forget. She has done the unthinkable and the unexpected again and again. Who knew such a degraded girl immersed in poverty would rise to become Argentina’s first lady? Eva Peron was born on May 7, 1919 in Los Toldos, Argentina. At a very young age, Eva’s father, Juan Duarte died in an automobile crash sending Eva’s family into even more poverty due to one less working parent. Eva’s mother now had to take care of five people not including her. Some of Eva’s siblings got a job that didn't pay much while others tried to marry into riches. However, Eva had a dream. At age 15, she dreamt of fame and fortune. She wanted to be seen in movies and to be heard on the radio. Little did she know that she’d turn out to be so much more than she ever imagined....

...Rizal’s toast to Luna and Hidalgo Rizal delivers a magnificent speech at Restaurant Ingles, Madrid that attended by prominent Spanish artist, newspapermen, and men-of-letters, statesmen and Filipino as well. The speech was Rizal’s toast to the triumph of Juan Luna and Felix Resurreccion Hidalgo. This magnificent speech was greeted with wild ovations, for seldom the Spaniards hear such an oration from the lips of a brown Filipino. And it seems to me that the whole monologue was said in great mediation that in my opinion has commanded the attention of those who came for the dinner. In the first few parts of the speech, Rizal described the surroundings with much romanticism like he is circled by “men of heart” and ” where noble emotions dwell” and “the air is full of empathetic good feeling.” At the time said, Philippines were under much oppression by the Spanish friars that is impossible to talk about it in public unless you would want to be branded as a filibuster. But in his speech, Rizal fearlessly exclaims the reason why they are gathered and that is to signify an achievement that had shed light into what has turned out to be a dark society as the painting itself portrays. He also gives praise to Hidalgo for illuminating the different ends of the globe and how high a respect he has for them. He claims change is coming as he used the metaphors such as the “illustrious achievements of (Philippines’) children are no longer consummated within the home.” This is a clear...

...The PJ (Peronist Party) according to Levitsky is a highly mis-conceptualized organization. Accepted amongst many is that the PJ lacks formal organization. Scholars have deemed its party’s organization as “virtually non-existent” (pg. 29). This belief is due to inactivity amongst party leader and the party bureaucracy. But to say the party is weak because of this, would be a mistaken belief. On the contrary, what would appear to be the greatest weakness is actually its greatest strength. One thing that is not misconstrued is that the PJ has a very large base. The PJ contains, “membership is nearly 4 million” (pg. 30). It is also “one of the largest democratic parties in the world” (pg. 30). So how can we say this party is so weak, when in its physical size, it is very large. Even if you were to disregard the fact that the PJ is strong in regards to its electoral strength, you still wouldn’t understand Levitsky’s argument. The PJ’s organizational structure has been under researched. Scholars tend to focus on the wrong things. The weak or lack of formal structure tends to “obscure the informal structure that surrounds it” (pg 30). The Peronist may not be highly visible in regards to a party bureaucracy, but is established in unions, homes, and clubs. These things are harder to see in records or statues but provide the party its network to the working or lower class. To understand why the party works this way, you must examine some of its history. The PJ is a...

...Hines’ Paper I believe that the article written by Ruth D. Hines is an alternative view of reality through Don Juan’s personal experiences. The main idea of this article is how accountants and outsiders may see things differently. The article begins with Don Juan talking with his apprentice about a valley, he asks the apprentice to describe what he sees along with other simple questions. The apprentice answers with the first thing that comes to mind, which is the obvious and simple answers. Don Juan continues to steer him in other directions with his answers, forcing him to think outside of the box and to go against the flow of what others might think. I think that this article is showing us that accountants really do think differently than others. Don Juan is trying to make the apprentice think the way he does, the way of an accountant. He is trying to show him that accounting gives life to things such as goodwill and revenue at the time of realization. I think that he is trying to make the apprentice see things differently so he can better understand accounting in general. If we think of these simple things in a different way, it will help us in the long run when we come across these situations in our future life and jobs. With the knowledge of accounting, we can create an impression that we did not realize before. After reading this article, I too have started to think of reality differently. Although I have been studying accounting for a while now, I never really stopped...
