...Three works of literature, labeled immoral, unfit to read and even satanic, completely criticized for their use of vulgar language and “blasphemes” way of speaking their mind. What critics fail to see is the true creativity of the humor in Candide, the morality and kindness in Huckleberry Finn, and the passion of Don Juan. All three of these great works of literature have suffered the injustice of biased criticism and have been rejected from public schools, which wastes their educational potential. Candide has been place into the index of prohibited books, Huckleberry Finn has been banned almost every public school, and Don Juan has succumb to a similar fate. What people don’t understand is that these novels and works of poetry can show us more about how humans treat each other, how realistic some ridiculous things can be, and how we can understand ourselves. Candide is a novel written by the French writer Voltaire, it’s about a germen man by the name of Candide who goes on quite a journey meeting a variety of people, constantly running into political and religious figures with bad results. Meeting up with old friends and characters he believed dead, the novel consists of unrealistic situations in a comedic fashion but in the end, through all the hell he can say let’s just forget about it and move on in our life. This story can give you a real life perspective and show you that life shouldn’t be taken seriously, if a guy like Candide can go through what he did without a thought...

...Theodore Roosevelt and his Rough Riders did not lead the charge on San Juan Hill. Colonel Roosevelt participated primarily in the taking of Kettle Hill, which was adjacent to San Juan Hill. San Juan Hill is more of a misnomer as the area was a series of ridgelines making up the San Juan Heights and not a hilltop. The American press deemed this victory as the greatest victory for Theodore Roosevelt and the Rough Riders of the 1st Volunteer Cavalry even though the Buffalo Soldiers of the 10th Cavalry and 24th Infantry Regiment had done the bulk of the fighting. In the early months of 1898, key events took place in relatively rapid succession that led up to the Spanish-American War and in turn, the Battle of San Juan Hill. Some saw this war as a necessity to end the appalling conditions on an...

...SAN JUAN DE GUIMBA: A BRIEF HISTORY It was the 20th of February 1865 when a group of Ilocano settlers in wooden carts and horsebacks arrived at a vast forested plain northwest of the Binituan River in Nueva Ecija. They cleared the land and started planting the loamy soil with the rice seeds they brought with them. They called the new land San Juan de Guimba in honor of the patron saint the settlers brought from Ilocos, and of the pot-making industry called “gebba” which they used to do in the old land. Thus was the origin of Guimba and its rice industry as it rose to become the province of Nueva Ecija’s traditional top rice producing area. Soon more settlers arrived mostly from the old towns of Bacarra, Paoay, and Candon of the Ilocos provinces. Among the families who came were the Galapons, Mateos, Cudals, Padres, Cayogs, Romanos, Silvestres, Capinpuyans, Batangans, Faigals, Sumawangs, and Catabonas. What would be the town of Guimba is a relatively organized community when the Spanish colonialists arrived and appointed Don Luis De Ocampo as the first Gobernadorcillo. The Spanish left and the Americans came and in 1912, the town’s name was abbreviated to Guimba with Don Alfonso Faigal as the first Alcalde Mayor. St. John the Evangelist though remains to be its patron saint. The first municipal hall was also built during this year in what is now known as Faigal Street. The Plaza Municipal evolved and what will become the public market started its commerce. In 1963, a new...

...Journal Entry HIS/110 The Spanish migration to North America was an interesting topic in this week that piqued my interest. Learning more about this topic in the second chapter of US History through 1877 was a good starting point to keep my attention because it is something that I have been fascinated with beforehand. I used the artwork from this chapter because it is beautiful and seems to tell an excellent story of migration and the survival skills that were needed in this day in age. I researched more about the Spanish conquistador and was able to read on "Came Men on Horses: The Conquistador Expeditions of Francisco Vazquez de Coronado and Don Juan de Onate". This book speaks of any myths that may have been written or spoken of about the way the conquest of America. The Spanish was the first Europeans to enter the America Southwest. Stories about the city of Gold is what lured in a lot of people in hopes of riches. The conquistadors were fighting the decision to search for the city of gold or not. They did not want to have the burden on their shoulders of not attempting to search for it, and someone else find it if it deemed to be true. There were seven cities that were expected to contain gold for the conquistadors to search out. The conquistadors depended on navigation when it came to their needs of survival. This would be of great service to them when it comes to finding their way to their destination...

...Hines’ Paper I believe that the article written by Ruth D. Hines is an alternative view of reality through Don Juan’s personal experiences. The main idea of this article is how accountants and outsiders may see things differently. The article begins with Don Juan talking with his apprentice about a valley, he asks the apprentice to describe what he sees along with other simple questions. The apprentice answers with the first thing that comes to mind, which is the obvious and simple answers. Don Juan continues to steer him in other directions with his answers, forcing him to think outside of the box and to go against the flow of what others might think. I think that this article is showing us that accountants really do think differently than others. Don Juan is trying to make the apprentice think the way he does, the way of an accountant. He is trying to show him that accounting gives life to things such as goodwill and revenue at the time of realization. I think that he is trying to make the apprentice see things differently so he can better understand accounting in general. If we think of these simple things in a different way, it will help us in the long run when we come across these situations in our future life and jobs. With the knowledge of accounting, we can create an impression that we did not realize before. After reading this article, I too have started to think of reality differently. Although I have been studying accounting for a while now, I never really stopped...
