...Judgment Call NICOLE SINGLETON-BROOKS Kaplan Ethics and the Professional LS501 Professor John Gray August 26, 2013 Judgment Call Teleology – Jane is the victim of circumstances, not murder. If she is found guilty, she will go to jail for a crime she didn’t comment. By facts being missing from evidence, the best decision is to forge Jane’s signature to prevent an innocent woman from dying needlessly. There probably would have little or no remorse for doing so either. Of course the problem with altering evidence is that the attorney could possibly be caught. If that were to happen, the attorney would be the one who ended up in prison. Because of Double Jeopardy, Jane wouldn’t be retried for murder, but the attorney could end up with several years to serve. Would it have been worth it then? Possibly, for knowing that he/she did the right thing, but then their life, children’s lives, family and loved ones would end up suffering. It may be worth it though knowing he/she had saved someone’s life. Egoism – The attorney could look at their actions for forging Jane’s signature as a definite way to free her, thereby enhancing their own career as an attorney. Probably a high profile case, getting Jane off without the worry of getting a guilty criminal off would ease their conscience and build their career at the same time. Conversely, if they get caught, they get disbarred and jailed. Utilitarianism – By forging Jane’s signature and getting her off, she’s one less innocent...

... God calls Jonah to go to Ninevah to tell them that God will destroy the city if they don’t turn their ways Often times we are told to do things we don’t want to do as teens i.e chores, homework, work, talk in front of people * Running Away from God As soon as he heard what God wanted him to do, Jonah got on the first boat to Tarnish, which is the complete opposite direction hoping to run away from God because it was out of his comfort zone How many times have we tried running away from our calling because were scared of what the outcome will be. The unknown is scary!! What if we get made fun of? What is we fail? What if we don’t say the right things? Ninevah was the capital city of Assyria and was renowned as one of the most cruel and brutal nations in the ancient world. They thought nothing of burying their enemies alive, skinning them alive, or impaling them on sharp poles under the hot sun until they died of sunburn and exposure. Furthermore, Jonah’s message was not to be one of “God’s Love”, but of “God’s Judgement.” Its one thing to tell others about God’s love, but to tell of God’s judgement is not a welcome message people want to hear. Who wouldn’t run away? Outside his comfort zone, hostile listeners, and an unwelcome message. How often our lives are overturned because God asks us to do something that was simply not comfortable, or worse, against the norms. He calls us to deliver...

...risk to investors invisibly. Hence, investors would like to speculate and hedge the financial risk as much as possible when do financial decision. Derivative financial instruments such as options, futures and others have been introduced and more commonly used to manage financial risk for improving decision making in this dynamic competitive environment. Options are defined as securities which one party has the right (no obligation) to buy or sell underlying assets with certain price within a certain/specific period of time (Hull, 2012). The option can be either call (right to buy) or put (right to sell) in the form of American options (exercised any time until expiry date) or European options (exercised on expiry date) as either traded options (standard option contracts) or overt-the-counter options (tailor made options). Due to various choices of options, different option pricing models such as Put-Call Parity, Black-Scholes, Cox-Rubenstein Binominal, Risk-Neutral valuation, the Greeks and others has been developed and applied in current financial market. Black-Scholes Option Pricing Model (BS) BS is designed and introduced by Fisher Black and Myron Scholes in 1973 with the assumptions of the market is efficient, returns are lognormal distributed, no commission or transaction cost is charged, no dividend is paid, no penalties to short selling, terms of European option is used, interest rate is remained constant and known rate (Black & Scholes, 1973). Thereafter...

...Priestley initially introduces Sheila Birling as ‘a pretty girl’ although she’s in her early twenties. These early descriptions suggest immaturity; the fact that she is in her early twenties yet is still referred to as a girl. At the beginning of the book, she is presented as shallow and naïve. This allows for the audience to make premature judgements. However, this naivety and immaturity isn’t apparent at the end of the play. Sheila matures over the course of the play and her change is much more dramatic than other characters in the play. As the play is set in 1912, it could be argued that Priestley uses these changes to suggest the forthcoming changes after the war: before WWII, everyone was rather ignorant but the catastrophes of the war acted as an eye-opener for the general public; just as the Inspector’s visit was an eye-opener to the Birlings. At the beginning of the play Sheila’s joy and cheerfulness seems slightly excessive. This is a subtle hint to the audience that there’s an oncoming turnaround. Sheila is very materialistic (“…who has put on ring admiringly”) and very superficial (“Pretty?”). Similarly to a child, she enjoys attention and is definitely enjoying the attention that comes with the engagement. Another very childlike attribute Sheila possesses is her lack of seriousness; she seems to take everything as a joke (“with mock aggressiveness” “half serious, half playful”). Sheila doesn’t just act like a child, but is also treated like one (“Now Sheila…”...

...This essay will explore the themes, character development and Priestley’s intentions for An Inspector Calls. Mr. Birling is a large pompous man in his mid fifties, a successful business man and the father of the Birling family. Throughout the play, Mr. Birling is shown by Priestley to be a narrow minded and unjust character. His uncaring view towards factory workers and cold-heartedness both contribute to Eva Smith’s death – who symbolises many other women who, like her, live in poverty and are treated unfairly by the upper-classes. Mr Birling on the other hand symbolises self-serving and materialistic Capitalism. This is demonstrated when Mr. Birling says ‘A man has to make his own way – has to look after himself’. Mr. Birling was not born...

...In this essay I am going to be exploring the role and function of the inspector in “An Inspector Calls“. I am going to break down his role in the play, explore his effects on the other characters and analyse his stage presence and also show his intention in coming to the Birling household. I am also going to express whether I think, in the play, the inspector is supposed to be a real person or something other. When exploring the effects that the inspector has on the other characters I will describe the characters personalities and characteristics before the inspector arrives, and then after, once the moral has been introduced, to then find out whether they have engaged in becoming a better person or not. The social and historical perspective of the play is very important as it was written in 1945 and set in 1912. There are lots of events that happened between those times that the audience would have known at the time. Most of these are mentioned by the deluded Mr Birling, who says facts that the audience know not to be true, but he says them in such a confident, superior manner that it makes the audience dislike him. He says things such as “just because the Kaiser makes a speech or two, or a few German officers have too much to drink and begin talking nonsense. The Germans don’t want war. Nobody wants war, except some half-civilised folk in the Balkans. And why? There’s too much at stake these days. Everything to lose, and nothing to gain by war”. Even when Eric, who...

...Although these texts were written more than a century apart, they both explore the changeable and intricate relationships between a parent and their child. ‘Romeo and Juliet’ and ‘An Inspector Calls’ portray similar relationships between a parent and child. The structure of each text highlights the conflict and aggression, as the tension progresses. The scenes intensify when the powerful, controlling father figure feels his authority has been challenged by a child in the family. Firstly, in 'Romeo and Juliet' Lord Capulet expresses his forceful, vicious side when Juliet commits an act of disobedience. She decides to not follow her father's ‘decree’ to marry Paris, stimulating her father to act violently. Similarly, in 'An Inspector Calls', Priestly presents Mr Birling as a pompous man initially. However, as the tension increases, the atmosphere begins to change, and he becomes agitated as Sheila begins to answer back, revealing all of their crimes. There is a sense of hostility towards his children, as he feels they are to blame for the monstrosities that had occurred that night, potentially putting him at a disadvantage. Shakespeare and Priestly use a variety of techniques to present the relationships and theme of parental control and authority. Act 1: Scene 2 In this scene, Shakespeare presents Lord Capulet as a man who cares deeply for his pride and reputation, but above all his daughter. However, Lord Capulet seems to have a deceptive nature, when speaking about his...

...An employee stock option plan (also called a share-based compensation plan) is a compensation arrangement (award) established by a corporation. Under this plan, its employees, in exchange for their services, receive shares of stock, share options, or other equity instruments (or the corporation incurs liabilities to employees in amounts based on the price of its stocks). Mr. Lay’s option plans were considered as compensatory. A noncompensatory employee plan (share purchase plan) is designed by a corporation to raise capital or to obtain more widespread employee ownership of the corporate stock. Three criteria must be met for a share option plan to be noncompensatory: 1. Substantially all employees who meet limited employment qualifications may participate in the plan on an equitable basis. 2. The discount from the market price does not exceed the per-share amount of stock issuance costs avoided by not issuing the stock to public. A purchase discount of up to 5% automatically complies with this criterion. 3. The plan has no option features other than the following: (a) employees are allowed a short time (no longer than 31 days) from the date the purchase price is set to decide whether to enroll in the plan, and (b) the purchase price is based solely on the market price of the stock on the purchase date, and employees are permitted to cancel their participation before the purchase date and obtain a refund of any amounts previously paid. If all these criteria are met, the...

...C A L TECHNICAL The Greeks are coming STEVE JAY RELEVANT TO PAPER 3.7 The new Paper 3.7 Syllabus includes far more detail on options than the old Paper 14. This article looks at the areas involved in the scope and benefits of financial engineering section of the syllabus. The reference to Greeks will become clear as we proceed. WHAT IS AN OPTION? The definition in finance is quite similar to that in every day language, i.e. an option is the right but not the obligation to perform a certain action. More specifically in finance it means that if we buy a call option we have the right but not the obligation to buy: a fixed amount; at a fixed time; at a fixed price; of the underlying instrument. On the other hand if we buy a put option we have the right but not the obligation to sell: a fixed amount; at a fixed time; at a fixed price; of the underlying instrument. TABLE 1: OPTION TERMINOLOGY Call option Put option Exercise price/Strike price In the money Out of the money American Option European Option Premium Traded Option Over the counter option Let us commence with a summary of the terminology surrounding options. This is given in Table 1 and many of the terms should be familiar from the foreign exchange and interest rate exposure sections of the syllabus. USES OF OPTIONS Options have two major uses on financial markets, speculation and hedging. Figure 1 gives an example of how speculators can use options to gamble on share price movements. It will...

...by the Eagles On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair, warm smell of colitis, rising up through the air. Up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light. My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim, I had to stop for the night. There she stood in the doorway; I heard the mission bell and I was thinking to myself, "This could be Heaven or this could be Hell". Then she lit up a candle and she showed me the way. There were voices down the corridor, I thought I heard them say, “Welcome to the Hotel California. It’s such a lovely place, such a lovely face. Plenty of room at the Hotel California, any time of year, you can find it here”. Her mind is Tiffany-twisted, she has the Mercedes bends. She has a lot of pretty, pretty boys she calls friends. How they dance in the courtyard, sweet summer sweat. Some dance to remember, some dance to forget. So I called up the Captain, "Please bring me my wine.” He said, "We haven't had that spirit here since nineteen sixty nine." Still those voices are calling from far away. Wake you up in the middle of the night just to hear them say, “Welcome to the Hotel California. It’s such a lovely place, such a lovely face. They’re living it up at the Hotel California. What a nice surprise, bring your alibis.” There are mirrors on the ceiling, the pink champagne on ice. Then she said "We are all just prisoners here, of our own device.” In the master's chambers, they gathered for the feast. They stab it with their steely knives, but they just...

...1. Managing Currency—Currency Options Let’s based on Figure 1.1 Option Chain for NASDAQ OMX call option below, we will do a call option example. Figure 1.1: Option Chain for NAZDA OMX Group Inc. (Taken and Compiled from Figure 1.2: Option Chain for NASDAQ OMX Group Inc. (NDAQ) in Appendix A) Both calls and puts option will be based on the option of striking price at 32 cent/AUD, expires on September 2013 and a contract size is AUD10,000. 1.1 Call Option Premium price=2 cents/AUD Supposed that the spot rate at expiration (in cents), ST = 40 cents/AUD Exercise value = ST– Strike price = 40 – 32 = 8 cents per contract or $800. Thus, the call owner will be able to purchase AUD10,000 worth $4,000 (=AUD10,000 X $0.40) in the spot market, for $3, 200 (=AUD10,000 X $0.32). But if the Spot rate at the expiration is lower than the strike price, and causing a negative exercise value, the caller buyer has no obligation to exercise as it will be a disadvantage. He/she can either let it expire or zero value. Below in Diagram 1.1 graph illustrates the 32 Sept AUD call option from the buyer’s perspective at the expiration. As shown above, in the buyer’s perspective, he/she should not lose any amount over the premium when the Spot rate is higher than the Strike price and in theory the buyer will have an infinite gains. When it reaches the spot rate at expiration which is ST = E+p = 32+2 = 34 cents/AUD, both the buyer and the writer have gain or lose...
