Jules Verne was born on February 8, 1838 in Nantes, France which was a marine port city where ships constantly sailed back and forth. This sight would later be the cause of Verne’s passion and interest in travel and adventuring to unknown places. At a young age Verne was in love with theatre and literature although, his father wished for him to follow in his footsteps and become an attorney. For this reason Verne was sent to Paris to study law. After graduating law school Verne could not fulfill his father's dream of him becoming a lawyer for his heart was set on literature. With a new family Verne needed to support, his current job was not enough. He then decided to become a broker at the Paris Stock Market. However, Verne did not plan on deserting his writing career and published his first book, The 1857 Salon, that same year. Verne was also inspired to write Backwards to Britain, while on the first of many trips to the British Isles. In 1861 their first and only child Michael Jean Pierre Verne was born.
Jules Verne had a hope to create a new style of writing that would, “combine scientific fact with adventure fiction” (Evans). n 1862 Verne met Pierre-Jules Hetzel. Hetzel took interest in Verne’s new kind of novel and agreed to publish Five Weeks in a Balloon, the first of the Voyages Extraordinaires, which was a series of adventure novels Verne had written. His novel became an international bestseller and encouraged Verne to sign a long term contract in which he would produce more science fiction novels yearly for
